  • If you send a manufacturer Raw file from Lightroom Classic to a plugin and have that plugin return a DNG file, that DNG file will often be huge. In this video, I demonstrate that issue using Topaz Labs Photo AI and offer a solution.

    If you want to use the Lossy Compression method, a quicker way in Lightroom is to use the Convert Photo to DNG in Library, even when it is already a DNG it will shrink the file without having to export or import.

    As I understand it any processed raw will be larger than the original as the original is not yet demosaiced. Lightroom only demosaics upon export, storing the edits in the catalogue prior to that hence the increase in file size when an external editor returns the file even if subsequently compressed by Lightroom.

    Anthony, thank you so much for that fascinating expose. I never could figure out why Adobe produced DNGs were always smaller file sizes than with other imaging software.

    This same thing happens when using Raw noise reduction in Lr. You end up with a huge DNG file. I didn't know you could export a DNG to DNG. Generally, I need JPGs for clients, so I keep the original Raw files and just "Topaz" them to jpegs , and rename on export. I feel I don't need to retain any DNG files since it is so easy to process the Raw files again. Also, the software is improving almost weekly, so I get better one on the next processing anyway.

    I finish my images in Photoshop. PS sends it back into Lightroom Classic as a TIFF file (I´ve set it up that way). For my Microstock images, Getty Images need the uploads to be JPGs. I then export from LrC as a jpg. Eventually I keep my original RAW file and the finished TIFF file in my LR catalogue and delete the DNG file.

    I tested this with some ARW files created with a Sony A7III. Original files are 25.4MB. That's compressed RAW in Sony's ARW format. Topaz Photo AI will usually return a file that's about 88 to 90MB. When I export them again as DNG it might save 5MB or maybe increase the file size by a MB or two.
    However, exporting a .tiff file to DNG from editing in Photoshop resulted in the file going from 315MB to 110MB. Nice. Thanks for the tip.

      I've found that using lossy DNG compression gives you the equivalent of about a 100% Jpeg, so if there aren't any blown highlights or dark shadows it will work fine. However, the LrC transform tool doesn't fix these images in the same way (as with the original), so it must depend on some of the meta data removed to make the file lossy.

    Great explanation of workaround to something thats bugged me for ages.Up till now just exported from Topaz ai as jpeg but would prefer dng.

    Thanks, this was interesting. Didn't know that third party programs couldn't compress DNGs. Adobe-produced DNGs use lossless compression and it's usually a bit more efficient than the camera manufacturer's own lossless RAW-files (one reason to convert to DNG - I still prefer to keep the originals though). I assume the reason why Topaz Labs create so large DNGs is that they demosaic the files when it do it's thing and then you'll end up with three times as large files and even bigger if you start with a compressed RAW and return an uncompressed DNG.

    Seems a little silly not to allow compression....we can do it, why not Topaz...I'm sure there are thousands of reasons why not...this is a great help, thank you...

    Thanks as always. Seems a bit bizarre to prevent 3rd parties using lossless compression. I wonder if it’s more of an extra licence fee being required by Adobe that Topaz doesn’t want to pay? The DNG format appears to support a wide variety of lossless compression but most such compressions require payment of a licensing fee for commercial use

    I’m finding doing an export as dng file in Lightroom of topaz dng file it actually ends up smaller than original raw dng with both DJI drone dng as wall as Canon CR3 raw files. This doesn’t seem right.

    I didn't understand anything, but I don't use Topaz or have this problem. Probably someday, I will, and will be back here trying to figure it out! That said, I was thinking about abandoning Adobe and switching to Topaz, due to Adobe being able to see and use our images for AI and stuff. But if all my images are DNG and in my LRC catalog, that will basically have me starting all over. I can't access those anymore, is that right? I have a lot exported as jpegs, as well as my SD cards with the RAW images, but I will lose all my collections and edits that I can go back and tweak.

    Is there any quality changes when exporting DNG to a DNG? I would expect some loss of quality with a DNG that has been compressed.

    I think Lightroom Classic Denoise is superior to the older version of Topaz DeNoiseAI, that I still use, but I only use LRC when I don't mind waiting for 2 or 3 minutes for the processing to complete. I typically delete the monster DNG files that result after I generate a jpg from it because I don't want to store those bulky DNGs.
    I haven't upgraded to Topaz PhotoAI beacuse I still use the older DeNoiseAI except for very high noise situations when I rely on LRC's Denoise instead. But if Topaz DeNoiseAI can process a Canon CR2 raw file and return it as a Canon CR2 file, I wonder why Topaz PhotoAI can't do that as well?

    • @DavidWood2
      @DavidWood2 Před měsícem

      It is impossible for any of these AI-powered applications to return a proprietary RAW file. Proprietary RAW files contain mosaiced data; each pixel has a single value depending on whether it's a R, G or B pixel. The AI processing step requires the data to be demosaiced so that each pixel has an RGB value. You can store demosaiced RAW data in a DNG but not a proprietary RAW file, which is why these applications output DNG files.

    • @DavidSwarthout
      @DavidSwarthout Před měsícem

      @@DavidWood2 Thanks for that info but my question remains unanswered. How does Topaz DeNoiseAI plugin get away with it? It reduces the noise in my Canon RAW files but does not create a DNG file. Maybe when it's operated as a Photoshop plugin that makes it possible?

    • @DavidWood2
      @DavidWood2 Před měsícem +1

      @@DavidSwarthout If you are using DeNoise AI as a Photoshop plugin then it will be returning bitmap data directly to Photoshop. It is not outputting a proprietary RAW file.

    This is weird. We should put pressure on Adobe to allow third parties to decrease the size of their DNG. Btw, the same increase in size happens with DXO pure raw 4. All DNG are more than 5 time the original Adobe DNG.
