  • This is my personal footage of the best moment in the clubs history (not forgetting '68). The treble winning season. It’s not the best camerawork; it was difficult to keep still and focus under the circumstances, but stick with it and TURN YOUR VOLUME UP!
ManU fans let’s remember the good times. They will return!
Camp Nou, Wednesday 26th May 1999 - 22:16 CEST. Teddy Sheringham has just equalized one minute into time added on. Approx. 4 mins long.

One thing people forget about the treble season is how tough our cup runs were...
In the FA Cup, among others, we ended up having to play:
    - Chelsea
    - Liverpool
    - Arsenal(twice)
    - Newcastle(who were one of the top teams back then)
In the Champions' League we got Brondby, Barcelona and Bayern in our group, the 'group of death' that no-one thought we'd even qualify from, and in the knockout rounds we got Inter Milan, Juventus and Bayern again. So in all we had to play the following teams at least twice each:
    - Bayern Munich(three times)
    - Barcelona
    - Inter Milan(who were seriously good back then, and had just signed Ronaldo de Nazario)
    - Juventus
...this was back when the CL only had three knockout stages too.

Mad but happy. Wish I had been there!

Thanks for posting, it may be shaky, it may be blurry but it perfectly captures those last few minutes. I was on the bottom tear about 20 rows up on the right hand post and when we equalised the fans were that emotional they couldn't get a song going until 'We shall not be moved 'boomed out. We only got to the line European Cup and Ole struck the winner, the explosion of noise was something else . I've tried describing it many times but this like I said captures it perfectly. A night I'll never forget.

We were much lower down than you, and towards where we took the decisive corners from, your video best captures the sheer delirious joy of that night more than any other video on CZcams. That night with 60k reds staring defeat in the face to then being catapulted on top of the world within the space of two minutes, that emotion is something I will never forget as long as I live. Absolute magic. Thanks.

  • @thesprawl2361
    @thesprawl2361 Před 5 lety +12

Forgive me for posting the following rambling memories of the game....
The whole match was a psychological battle, and because Bayern had been so amazing defensively that season, so organised and so difficult to break down, we didn't really believe we could score for most of the match. I didn't believe we were going to score and we didn't really come close at all...until the very last five minutes or so, when you could see the United players just begin to realise what they were going to lose out on if they didn't do something...
And then, crucially, we brought on Teddy and Ole.
That was so important, because both sides were knackered, physically and mentally, because they'd both been concentrating so hard for ninety minutes. It looked like a low energy game but really both sides were at their full levels and apart from the Bayern goal they perfectly canceled one another out.
...But then SOS trotted on, fit and raring to go, with none of the anxiety that the starting 11 had, and they lifted the other Utd players, and lit a fire in them. The rest of the team suddenly got a glimpse of two players who had been _outside_ the narrative flow of the game up until that point, who hadn't been part of the slow, predictable story-so-far; and who could step in and _change_ the story as a result. The other Utd players saw the game through Teddy and Ole's eyes: that it was there to be won, and only lack of confidence was holding Utd back...Bayern didn't know how to deal with that jump in energy levels and confidence in the Utd team, and we suddenly looked like we could score whenever we wanted!
And the equaliser just _destroyed_ Bayern - all night(all season in fact) they had kept a poker face, and made it look like defending for ninety minutes had been easy, but they were knackered and the equaliser shattered them.
And it shattered them because they weren't an attacking team. They knew how to defend leads and slow down games - but the prospect of extra time, and having to go out and attack... you could see they had no confidence in their ability to do that. From that point on the winner was inevitable.
Once Sheringham equalised Bayern were so broken that a pub league could probably have scored against them - they just lost all hope, they were shells of the players they had been only seconds before.
They were...traumatised. In the literal sense of the word. I know, I know: they didn't suffer a real tragedy, they didn't lose a loved one, or get assaulted...but they were suffering from trauma nevertheless; not as severe or as lasting as real, serious trauma, but they had all the symptoms. And there was no way they could gather themselves together after that equaliser.
Maybe if it had gone into extra time they would've picked themselves up and found renewed strength - I can believe that. After all, they were a very tough team. But we never gave them the chance.
It's still one of the most intense feelings of joy I've ever had, that two or three minutes back then, and the whole season was a crazy ride where it felt like someone was writing a Hollywood script for us. What a season, what a game, and what a way to finish the treble!

I try to explain to my girlfriend what a gutteral explosion of noise after the winner. I was more to the left of this video and maybe a bit higher. We were lucky. From 5am at manchester airport where our flight was delayed 2 hours... taxi to Rambla around 12.. totally battered as matched approached. We had no idea of metro system.
Bayern were so unlucky. they outplayed us, but failed to kill the game. I remember having a banging headache for most of the match.
I had in those few days , seen League, FA Cup, and this followed by getting married on 31st in Las Vegas.
Another story and not taking the p*ss. I now live in Switzerland.. My , then, boss was big Munich Fan. Got train to Barcelona with 3 friends (all had tickets). On match day, got involved in 5-a-side footy game with some locals and their tickets were stolen. He told me they were so distraught they just got on a train back...
Me and my brother got wacked (batons) by “United” officials as we didnt have “official” stamp to get coach back to the airport even though we tried to show travel documents. On flight back we got a “courtesy” micro heineken (warm) from the club included. The Baton weilding ugg was handing them out... Anyway , lurch aside, probably the best day of my life

Nothing compares to this. I was just to the left low level as you look at the Bayern goal from the halfway line. Beckham took the corners about 30 yards from me on my right. We stood the whole game. When we scored the 1st goal we all fell backwards over the seats behind. My mate was still getting back up when the 2nd one went in. Quite simply the greatest finish to a massive game ever as there were over 90,000 there that incredible night in Barcelona. Outside the police cordon some 500 yards away from the stadium I estimate there were at least another 250,000 fans who didn't make it into the stadium that night as they couldn't get tickets. I feel for you mate. I can't imagine how how that must've felt. But that's just what we did to opposition teams...we gave you a long, deep sniff of the wine in the bottle, so long that you got a little bit drunk...and then we snatched the bottle from your hands just as you were about drink it. That was Fergie's teams at their most deadly - the destroyers of dreams 😀
Bayern were frighteningly good in defense that season though, and they played brilliantly for eighty-seven minutes of the match, really stifled us. But the substitutions changed the confidence and energy levels in the Utd team...
