In fact the 'Sochna Kya ' is inspired by 'La mbada' dance music. Though La mbada was made popular by Kaoma in 80's but before that being a traditional dance music in Para, Brazil; there are various other musicians earlier to Kaoma who had tried their hands on it. Like recently, JLo last hit was also inspired not copied 😃

Well .. there was "o meri jaisi hasina ka dil jise mil jaye" composed by Bappi Lahiri which was a straight lift from Dr Hook's "when you are in love with a beautiful woman". RD's score from the film "Ghar" .. "phir wahi raat hai" was eerily similar to the Carpenters' "Sing a song". LP also lifted the famous Guitar riff for the song 'Ik Haseena this" in Karz from the song "We as love" by the Jazz Guiitar Maestro George Benson ..the list is endless .

Edit. I just remembered. I have to add Tu Cheiz Badi Hai Mast Mast from Mohra which is copied from Ustad NFAK Musst Musst. Bollywood also copied his song Mera Piya Ghar Aaya with the same title and the song starred Madhuri Dixit (I don't know the title of the film tho)

It's very hurtful to find out that composers like Bappi da, RD Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal also copied other songs to make bollywood hits. However they didn't realize that their trechary will be caught one day. They didn't acquire the copyrights , just copied the music and pasted with their own words. I thought these legends were actually super-talented but alas, that is not the case. But some modern day show off are worst than them..
    It's very shameful for bollywood.

I don’t think it’s such a serious problem if a music composer uses the melody of an already existing song for making songs for a film, since there is a limit to how many melodies you can create. However, the issue is when the composer(s) doesn’t credit the original creator for their contributions. I think that is the real problem.

sharadowasdr I agree with you, but that's besides the point. Better or worse, the original composer/ songwriter should be acknowledged. Think about the rare instances when a Bollywood song was sampled in a Western album without acknowledgement. Indians went crazy, saying it was racism, etc. Funny how they didn't feel the same way when it was the other way around.

Movie song composers had far more access to international records than the general public, so they got away with copying international records. Anu Malik couldn't get away with it as much because the 1990s was a time of globalization and increasing access to international music.

    • @vish3161

Not true .. I was a teenager back in the 70s and even then we knew that many of the songs that were hits at the time were copied .. for instance we had heard Demis Roussau's "Say you love me" on Srilanka Broadcasting corp before "Mehbooba Mehbooba" was released and could instantly tell that it was a copy. LPs and later Cassettes of western songs were available and international radio stations could be accessed on AM radio. The composers during those days used to travel abroad and must have picked up a lot of international music and definitely had far greater access to world music than the rest of us. Many of the copies were deliberate .. when asked the euphemism used for copying a song was "inspired by the song"
