  • Hosts Lee Smith and Jane Johnston do their best to push the most durable piece of equipment to failure, by any means necessary.
    Special thanks to Wanstalls for giving us a good deal on the ammo to review the buckler with.

    There is a certain irony in the fact that, out of the entire range of Cold Steel synthetics, their best product is a shield.

      I really wish their synthetic weapons were better quality, they're the most affordable things out there but even then there's no point in buying any of their products.

    We tried carbine and it stopped it...
    Then we tried 9mm and it stopped it...
    Then we tried shotguns and it stopped it...
    Then we put explosives and it survived....
    Then we brought a lvl 99 Warlock to cast meteor storm on it and it actually reflected part of the damage and the Warlock died...
    Then we summoned motherfucking Cthulu and he gave it a couple of strikes, he then said "NOPE!" and went crawling back into the ocean for another 1000years.....
    Then we brought yo mama to sit on it and it held together, this is when we realized it was indestructible
    MAN, talk about abusive testing

    Playing Witcher 3 while drunk, saw that the Bloody Baron has a buckler at his belt at all times, remembered that I don't have a buckler, watched this video, now I might need to buy a buckler. Just in case sword fighting comes back in style. It's important to be prepared.

    Transparent polycarbonates are used to make bullet-proof "glass", so the resistance of these bucklers to gunfire shouldn't be very surprising.

    Bucklers, no matter steel or synthetic, seem to mix well with any weapon material. Our club has at least a dozen steel bucklers and they do not damage the synthetic swords that we use at all.

    My only complaint is the handle shape. It has oval shaped cross section with the longer diameter being perpendicular to the flat of the buckler so it forces you to hold it like a basket hilt rather than an iron age round shield. This is not a big problem but it does make half shielding feel a little awkward

  • @Shutendoji
    @Shutendoji Před 7 lety

    There's one thing I'd like to change with the buckler, and that's making the handle more flag so that you can hold something else in the same hand more comfortably. Like the classic sixth play of Liegniczer's buckler where you grab your own blade and then snatch the opponent's buckler would be much easier with a flat grip, or just holding a dagger in the buckler hand in the Sikh fashion.

      Thanks! one more question. Would you find it dificult to bolt on a thinner flat handle?

    • @HEMASimian
      @HEMASimian Před 7 lety

      Theoretically, yes. It's held together by nuts and bolts, so providing you can take those out and drill same sized holes on a new handle, it should fit. However that being said, we've never tried to take one apart like that so we can't guarantee that there isn't some other system in place to hold it together. Even when half of it was blown off it was still strong enough for sparring so maybe disassembly would be difficult.
      If you do try though, please let us know how it went!

    I've tried destroying some of these a couple years ago with sharps out of curiosity. Stopped my longsword and viking sword, barely stopped my messer, and was annihilated by my cold steel norse hawk. On top of that the rim couldn't handle any kind of blade and the shields just split there (A strong enough hit from a bowie knife could split them). I didn't try with my claymore but judging from what the other things did it wouldn't stop a claymore. Kind of wish I had filmed it.

  • @cyberdrift1
    @cyberdrift1 Před 7 lety +1

    Usually like your stuff pretty well but you really need to go back and recheck you methodology and possibly your eyes on this video. I have some of the cold steel practice swords and the material is freakin tough. I also have AK's, AR's, winchesters....ect and have shot them threw and against various thickness steel plates. The rifles (7.62x39) will shoot threw any part of this and more than likely the handle bit too. I will also almost George Forman guarantee that the 9mm will smoke threw it as well.
    You should really have used some kind of backing (piece of paper) changed each time to identify any pass threws. It can be hards to identify the exit holes in some targets ie. self healing plastic targets .
    The single projectile rounds should have been marked to tell them apart and the pellets (yeh this bit is just real picky) should have been done last.

      They said in the video that one of the good things about having the synthetic buckler is that it won't wear the blades it's clashing with as much while still being durable enough. A well made metal buckler would probably be more durable, but would damage the blades it comes in contact with more.
