In the first of a multi-part series of interviews with the cast of Birmingham Hippodrome's 2016/17 pantomime production, 'Dick Whittington', I sit down and chat with the legendary Ian and Janette Tough, a.k.a The Krankies!
We chat about their incredible 50 years both working and living together, the enduring appeal of panto, their earlier years working with the likes of Gene Pitney, Roy Orbison and on the Midlands circuit, and even what to do with a posthumous Amy Winehouse 'kebab' wig!
DICK WHITTINGTON runs at the Birmingham Hippodrome from Monday 19th December 2016 to Sunday 29th January 2017.

I first watched the Krankies perform on a show called "Crackerjack!", back when my family lived in the UK (my father was a USAF sergeant, and he was stationed in the UK, at RAF Upper Heyford). Back then, the Brits had only 3 TV channels, so programming was limited to watch, but the after-school hours were filled with shows for all ages. Watching Ian and "Jimmy" perform together was a treat to watch: they were funny, fun and always entertained all of us.
It wasn't until after we'd been living in-country for a year or so, that my parents actually learned from a co-worker that "Jimmy" was actually a woman, and Ian was her husband. That was an informative thing for the young, teenaged me, who got to see a lot of Brti comedy acts -- Little & Large, The Two Ronnies, Monty Python's Flying Circus, and Benny Hill -- and learn that comedy comes from all corners.
It's still a treat to see Ian and Janette in this interview. They were a part of my formative years, and I treasure the laughs I got from them.
