      I think Chinese restaurants are too practical lol. Japanese mastered marketing and being pretentious after the 80's and now everything that pricey is some type of near mystical thing about combination of heaven and earth and chef or farmers spirit in the food. They basically took advantage of orientalism and profited off it. This isn't to say there isn't effort put in, but there's a lot of story to go along with it to make it an "experience“.

    KBBQ can charge high-end price when you cook it yourself, Sushi can charge high-end price when it’s served raw, a steakhouse serves a half-cooked steak with minimum prep work (unless aged). Chinese cuisines are criminally under appreciated in America.

      Couldnt agree more. Its why ive always found cooking chinese food far more intimidating than any other cuisines. People are ignorant about the amount of effort and skill put into this stuff or worse they mock it.

      @@b.o.4469 They originally priced it based on the ingredients instead of the procedures. Price geared toward "old american-chinese" cause that population don't want to spend more. And those "Chinese take-out" fast food did not help one bit.

    Cool video Fung Bros!!! It's another episode of Fung Bros food!!! I like the higher end Chinese restraunts. It's baller. The Peking duck looked bomb with the ha gow dumpling. The soft shell crab looked fire to.

    heck yea it should. Chinese food is often super labour intensive and the stereotype of cheap Chinese food is a way that our people also aren't allowed to raise their prices and really make money. if you would pay that amount of money for Italian, then DEFINITELY for Chinese food or just Asian food in general

    Chinese cuisine has an ancient history and I am glad that it is not just perceived any longer in the West as just a cheap fast food option. There is a delicious place for that in any cuisine, but if you can afford an extra special feast, try it!

    When it comes to asian food at that price, you usually get what you pay for and price is justified. Also, you must be asian or at least understand asian culture to justify the price. You cant be some westerner who doesn't understand asian culture or never had asian food to be judging the price and this applies to any culture's food, not just asian. These food vids are dope! Loving the content from Fung bros!

    they didnt put holes in the sticky rice for the the toppings to go in to, it is shaped like that because back in the days in china, coals for fire were shaped like that, and it is why they light it on fire.

    Very nice to see a high-end, creative Chinese restaurant here in NYC. There certainly were a lot of interesting original dishes & new takes on existing dishes. Now I get a take on what a high-end ⭐⭐⭐ Chinese restaurant should service. I am leaning towards Cheli as my first, future visit. Thanks for the different take on Chinese cuisine! Xie Xie

    You got your money's worth -- and more.
    What you ate all looked great. These restaurants recognized you though. You may have received above standard food and service.
    In addition to expensive ingredients, some of the items require an enormous amount of skill and technique to make. Hardly anyone could make what Hutong served you at home.

    I think that the cost for many is out of the park esp if you are a family of many on a limited income. I think often pricier restaurants just don't even register for some because it feel like such a waste. when your income is limited things like that are a special treat and often places come and go before you get to even try them. In the meantime I can try and enjoy vicariously through you. Thank you for that experience

    Only in America is expensive Chinese novelty. In Places like Hong Kong and Vancouver British Columbia expensive, delicious Chinese food is common. Of the places you reviewed the second place seems to hold the most value. All the ingredients use are on the high end where as the other places seem to use more common ingredients.

    Sure but they have to make it worth every penny you spend on the meal. In Taiwan, there's a $300 beef noodle soup so the price they offer in these restaurants for all of those dishes from $50 to $150 is pretty good.
