  • Emerging out of Massina Dia in the early 11th and 12th century, the Jakhanke (or Diakhanke) have become one of the foremost scholastic groups in West Africa. Consisting of some 40 surnames of Mandinke and Serekehule origin, they are known for their call to Islam through knowledge, exemplary character, and avoidance of unnecessary conflict. In this video, their origin is discussed as well as their initial explosion in the Mande cultural fabric at the hands of the erudite Al Hajj Salim Suware. Through an ethos of ethical living through the light of the Quran and the example of the Messenger Muhammad (PBUH), the Jakhanke have gone from the inhabitants of a small city in a distant empire to flagbearers of knowledge in their surroundings and subsequent travels.
