- đ IâLL BE IN YOUR ARMSđ
When my parents transferred me from a Montessori school to a public one in fourth grade, a wild-eyed sixth grader, who, for privacyâs-sake Iâll call Matt, used to huck apples at me when our teacher Ms Sergeant would turn her back during P.E.
In seventh grade, Matt was once again in my PE class, now older and a bit more cruel-I now gather his home life mustâve been as dramatic as mine-and my apple hazing didnât preclude me from more fun.
Him and his friends would do the classics: spit on my backpack and chuck it over the fence, call me whatever creative permutation of my name they could produce, or, on extra fun days, pull my shirt over my head and kick my shins like CORN until they bled.
Of course Iâd yell and curse and swing my little arms in circles, but Matt was always just out of reach.
Then, one day at lunch, in a storybook turn of events, Matt invited me to sit with him and his group. Maybe Iâd finally paid some kind of dues, plus, not wanting to ruffle any feathers, I sat down with them like a chump.
In front of us, the new student was walking on the retaining wall by the cafeteria.
âSee that?â Matt said, âthatâs new Casey. This is what I want you to doâŠâ
Sitting in the principals office for popping the new student in the face was not one of my prouder moments, and, in fact, the memoryâs been revisiting me, now almost twenty years later.
Fell for a dumb thing, didnât I?
Peopleâs crumminesses are communicable, just as their kindnesses are. Matt didnât know how gnarly it was for me at home. He couldnât see the grim moments coming for me in the near future just as I, to this day, have no idea what happened to New Casey, what crumminesses heâs endured until now, or how my own way of paying forward the way Iâd been treated affected him.
Kindness is hard. Itâs so much easier to be unkind, to not love, to detach-but the way this world can be, even to the little nuggets that need love most, is awful. School shootings, suicideâŠ
At least for me, these days, Iâm doing what I can to be kinder.
Anyways, this song is about someone who needed more love, and who, in some ways, finally got it.

Lyrics:
I stepped through a puddle of blood
on my way to the laundromat at dusk
someone gave up
I, I know this life can be unfair
god knows the grim is always there
licking its lips
But Iâll be in your arms
Iâll be in your arms
Iâll be in your arms
so Iâll be fine
I, I was as lonely as they come
moonlight on a gun
on the edge of a bed
iâve learned that things can come around
even the truly lost are found
the ring of a bell
crying in your arms
crying in your arms
crying as you tell me Iâll be fine
crying in your arms
crying in your arms
crying as you tell meâŠ
âŠIâll be fine. - ZĂĄbava
This was the song that got me hooked. It just popped up in my IG one day, and three weeks later I was at a live show in Mobile, AL, excited to hear songs I barely knew by a band I barely heard of. But I was instantly in love. I canât stop listening now, and I can hardly wait for this song to be out!
There's music sometimes that just speaks to the stuff of your soul, that something deeper than bones. Something so beautiful here. Crying listening to this masterpiece and not being able to quite put a finger on why exactly. All I know is that your music speaks louder than any words I could muster. đ„ đ»
