Thanks for doing this. The problem with drugstore sunscreens for me is that they are getting more expensive than some that you can only find at Ulta. For example, the Neutrogena tinted is $20 for 1 ounce. The Cotz tinted minerals are $27 for 2.5 oz. And Kinship Self Reflect is $28 for 1.7. Granted, the drugstore is coming out with nice things lately - multiple shades, etc. But I thought drugstore was supposed to be more accessible and affordable. Everyone needs to wear daily sunscreen and properly reapply, but some of us need more affordable options that don't sting our eyes and faces, but don't leave us looking like a ghost in order to do that. I love your videos!

I’ve noticed this as well. I guess because of the demand the go up? But as someone who has sensitive skin and eyes it’s irritating to find one that doesn’t look like white face paint. I usually love Cetaphil so I bought one advertised as "sheer" with high ratings at first glance. When I got home and put it on I literally looked like a clown. The stuff wouldn’t even blend or hide under makeup and I was already late for my date. I know I guess I should have done more research but I guess you can’t trust no ratings up front. Even my white friends don’t want it lol.

Australian Gold is my favorite tinted sunscreen. I think it makes my skin look amazing and feels weightless on me. I love the matte finish. Everything else I try feels so greasy and heavy to me. Love my Australian Gold I just wish that the fair shade is easier to find. I wear glasses and it doesn’t transfer or budge. As a charge nurse I don’t have time to babysit or touch up during the day, this is also my “foundation” I no longer even bother with foundation 😂

I don't even have oily skin and most of them feel sooo greasy on me?! I don't understand. Maybe ppl just have a higher tolerance for that then me? But I hate the tacky sticky oily feel that lingers. Also for my the Australian gold is Def at least medium coverage. But does start to feel drying and tightening as the day goes on unless I put a very thick mousturizer on.

Agreed, this has been my fave for a long time, plus it’s much more affordable than most. I want SPF 50 also. I have drier skin, but find a light moisturizer underneath is enough, and makes it a satin finish. I tried a light oil but it didn’t dry down. I mix the two lightest shades. Sadly, being in Canada many of your faves simply aren’t available here…

For the amount of product and price, I haven't felt the need to try anything else.

  • @NurseHallauer

Im a big fan of the Australian gold tinted sunscreen. I originally tried the medium shade and it was sheer enough that it looked fine on my face but didn’t match my neck well so I gave it to a friend and got the fair shade. I work 12+ hour shifts in the hospital under intense lights and I have naturally oily skin so pretty much any other sunscreen I’ve tried (even “matte” ones) make me look really shiny. This one is really nice and matte. On days I’m feeling like having a bit less tint and/or more UV coverage I will layer a nontinted sunscreen under. Even the ones that make me look shiny will get mattified by the AG when I layer it on top. It’s also vegan and cruelty free which are two things I try to really stick to with my hair and skincare whenever possible. Between all that and the low cost, I’m really happy with this product!

    • @b.victoria
      @b.victoria Před 9 měsíci +5

Same! I’m a very oily gal and AG, and the Cetaphil redness relief SPF 20, have been the only sunscreens I’ve found that don’t make me shiny. I usually use AG first, and then put Cetaphil on top as my “foundation”. Those layered together give medium-ish coverage - just add concealer to cover my dark circles, powder to set, and I’m good to go.

This Neutrogena sunscreen is so good! Prior to the Neutrogena, I was using the Elta MD UV Elements tinted spf 44, but being 54 and postmenopausal, my skin has become extremely sensitive and the Elta UV Elements now makes my face feel itchy and dry! So far the Neutrogena one is working very well for me. Excellent review! ❤

My issue with tinted sunscreen is that while brands seem to think they are being more inclusive by making mineral sunscreen more accessible, they are patting themselves on the back for doing the least. Most have tints that are light beige. Beige tint is not 'universal'
I need a dark brown tint to be effective. They should make more options for tint colors.

I have some video topic ideas that I don't see anyone doing, but I'd love to see: rating sunscreens based on how fast and how much they dry down (for those of us that wear glasses - you know what I'm talking about!), using one mineral sunscreen to start the day but then reapplying with a different mineral sunscreen later (say if you have one you like to start the day with and one to keep in your bag), trying different setting sprays over mineral sunscreens, and definitely more videos about tinted sunscreen and foundation pairings.

Thank you for the information. I'm still looking for my holy grail mineral based face sunscreens and with my dryer skin, it's been a challenge. I've a couple of non-drugstores that I kinda like (Ulta MD and Peter Thomas Roth) but for the drugstore, I purchased Bliss last year and like it, but I 100% agree with you on the lavender fragrance (I can't stand the smell of lavender) - however I found the smell to dissipate quite quickly so I don't smell it all day. I watched Abbey's review for Sunbum before but i'm glad that I still decided to give it a try. It works well for my fair skin, even though I'm not the fairest. Also, Sunbum and MD Solar Science in shade light have become my absolute favorites, and I tried almost all tinted sunscreens. They work best for maturing skin. I'm 41 and they make me look much younger because they hide wrinkles because of dimethicone. While shiny mineral sunscreens highlight and exaggerate wrinkles and make me look my age. I also have just purchased Elta MD Physical. Like the two above mentioned sunscreens it looks most natural on the skin, as if I'm not wearing anything, but it evens out the skin tone and covers my rosacea. I didn't like Elta MD UV Elements as much because the shade was a bit dark for me.

Thank you for doing this video! The subject matter was right up my alley. 😊
I used to use the Australian Gold tinted sunscreen when it was only available in one shade (light) and I loved it. As long as I used a moisturizer under it, it was great - wore all day and served as my foundation. As soon as I hit menopause and my skin became drier, I couldn't wear it anymore. It felt so dry, almost like my face was shrink-wrapped!
I tried the Neutrogena one in "light" but for some reason, it made my face itch, and I couldn't wash it off quickly enough. Sadly, I tossed it. 😢

Something to keep in mind about coconut oil. It doesn't have to be listed as "coconut oil" on the label. MANY mineral sunscreens contain caprylic/capric triglyceride, which is compounded from coconut oil and glycerine. It gives me cystic acne, and from what I've read in skin care subReddits, many others have the same problem.

Thanks so much for that but of info. I too have horrible cystic acne on neck, jaw and chin and lower cheeks. It’s so hard to get under control and than once I finally get my skin looking good, all it takes is one product and than I’m back to square one and it’s because of things like this where they either intentionally or unintentionally, disguise ingredients and use other names. I found that the best thing to prevent my cystic acne is PanOxyl face wash 10% benzoyl peroxide. I wash my face with a regular cleanser first and than go in with a second wash of the panoxyl (avoiding eye area)and allow it to sit on ‘y face for two to five minutes than rinse off and follow with other skin care. It seems to work better than surfer washes or salicylic acid washes but I do like a salicylic toner a few times a week. I make sure I use a good thick moisturizer after because I have dry skin and benzoyl peroxide can be very drying. You can also just use the medicated wash on areas that is needed or use the 4% instead of the 10% which is pretty strong. Benzoyl peroxide kills bacteria and can also be used under arm pits if you suffer from body Oder, I haven’t used it in that way but I heard a derm talking about it. I think differine also has a 10% benzoyl peroxide wash now too and some other brands as well, it’s great for body acne as well. I hope this helps anyone who suffers from hormonal cystic acne because it’s Beverly hard to treat and sucks.

I like the fact that it's drying and absorbs the oils beautifully throughout the day and I don't have to use foundation with it as long as I set it with Powder.I love the Matte finish because it doesn't accentuate fine lines and texture. It's a little too drying for me in the winter so I wear the sun bum tinted which I also love. That 1 doubles as both sunscreen and moisturizer for me and I also set it with powder to give more coverage. It's very blurring I love how these are both waterproof and smudge proof. I'm curious to try the cetaphil now.

I can use the Australian Gold only occasionally and with a heavy duty moisturizer underneath. I save it for those times when I’m going to be outdoors near or in water. In that case, I use it as my foundation.

Just a note that the SPF number on the label doesn't tell the full story. The SPF 50 Australian Gold one has active ingredients of 4% titanium dioxide and 4% zinc oxide. But if you look at the SPF 20 Cetaphil one you'll see the active ingredients are 10.1% titanium dioxide and 7.8% zinc oxide...far higher! If anyone can explain why having half the percentage of active ingredients can somehow lead to a far higher SPF, please let me know. I suppose the inactive ingredients could have somewhat of an influence, but I feel very skeptical knowing that sunscreen SPFs are known to be unreliable.

I’ve literally been looking for a tinted SPF for months. A lot of them look orange on me (I have light skin with pink undertones) or they look fine at first but then later in the day they look like I rubbed dirt on my face 😱 So THANK YOU for this! I’d like to see one of these videos that are non-drugstore for tinted SPFs! Thanks Abbey! As always, amazing video! ❤

I’m glad you get to the point and let us know what does and doesn’t have fragrance. For some reason I was under the impression that La Roche Posay was fragrant free after there was a lot of praise and hype about this product being non-irritating. Some of us can’t even handle the fragrances even if there’s little.

Ah nice that there’s some cool toned ones. I’m fair and cool toned and every tint I’ve tried is just orange. They’re so dark, I guess they think the regular white cast is okay for pale and tinted ones are made for darker skin. Def going to try!

I just ordered the Cetaphil one! I'm excited to try it. :) I agree that it would be better if it had a higher SPF, but there are days where I don't go anywhere so I can see wearing this on those days, but also wearing it on top of a 30+ SPF on other days. I may try the Neutrogena one next if I can find a better price for it.

I ❤️ Love the Neutrogena too! I use ALL 3 shades. The lightest one all over my face, the medium tone on my neck, and then I “contour “ my forehead, nose, cheeks AND double chin with the dark shade.
It looks amazing. If I need more coverage I use the Maybelline Rewind Concealer around my eyes, nose and cheeks (and everywhere there’s a shadow or imperfection). The concealer really brightens up my face!
The Australian Gold is super drying and I feel it on my face.
Unfortunately, I can’t wait to wash most mineral sunscreens OFF my face! Yuk!
But I don’t feel the Neutrogena ones at all. And it doesn’t sting my eyes.
ALSO love the tinted mineral one by DRMTLGY SPF 46. It’s slightly more coverage than the Neutrogena, but only comes in one shade (similar to the Neutrogena “medium” shade).
So I also mix these two.

I've been using the Australian Gold tinted sunscreen for a while now, but it is a bit too drying for me in the winter. I usually use the lightest shade as the base and the tan one as kind of a bronzer. It's one of the only tinted sunscreens that I've found doesn't look chalky on my skin. I'm hoping the neutrogena one will work for me during the winter. Thank you for the video!

Hey Abbey!! I was wondering if you’d consider mentioning when you review sunscreen products too about how sunscreens seem to perform in “hair-bearing” areas? It may sound silly but I know me personally and probably other male viewers really consider this because we have facial hair. I’m not sure if you would even be able to comment on this (maybe if you pay attention to how it is around your eyebrows or something is an idea I had?), and definitely not wrong that you don’t talk about it because it’s pretty obscure unless you think about it and no one else really does online either, but I know I might find this really helpful! Don’t feel like you have to, just a thought LOL kk thx luv u byeee

I love your sunscreen videos. You are the one who turned me on to Asian sunscreens for which I will be eternally grateful! I enjoyed this video but had one comment about the LaRoche Posay sunscreen. Since it has only titanium dioxide for sun protection, it only blocks 10% of the UVA spectrum. UVA rays cause aging and skin cancer. This one should have come in last place.
