This is one of the most, if not the most, complete tutorial for painting shoes, every single detail and tips are covered. Good work man!
Thank you!
I need to find one of theirs with airbrush ratios (paint and 2 thin ).
Seriously, I second that. Thank you for this incredible reference of a video. Amazing job!
Most of these notes are for the leather/hard leather shoes & hard leather parts of shoes.
Equipment/tools:
Angelus fabric/leather paint (do NOT use cheap fabric paint). Angelus Deglazer. Scotch Brite pads.
Sand paper: 400 grit, 800 grit, 1500 grit.
Acetone. Well ventilated area/fan/do not be downwind of the fumes be upwind. Cotton balls. Respirator, gloves.
Green Scotch 2060 tape. Brushes.
Toothpicks (for painting teeny-tiny areas and for getting in close along piping, painting letters, scratching off paint that dripped or smeared onto the wrong location).
Angelus matt finisher: 1/3 oz, 10% duller to 90% Angelus matt finisher.
Krylon matt finisher.
Prep: You HAVE to prepare the shoes first (if they are hard leather, not if they are soft fabric (canvas). You don't prep the inside of the shoe/the soft parts. Of course, all areas NEED to be clean so make sure you wash and scrub them.
Using the 400 grit sand paper, sand in a smooth, circular direction. Go around ea shoe 3x w/ea sandpaper. Spend approx 10 mins w/ea grit of sandpaper. Popsicle sticks (used to spread open the inside of the shoe so you can have as much room as possible to paint the inside of the shoe/the back of the tongue, the tongue, inside up top).
Scotchbrite pad w/Angelus deglazer w/acetone. Rub the shoes like you did before w/the sandpaper for approx 10 mins.
Time to clean up the shoe: Use cotton balls, deglazer. Time: 10 mins.
You can fill the inside of the shoe with newspaper or old t-shirts.
Put on a base coat or else you have to use a LOT of color coats so you don't see what's under the paint/the surface of the shoe. Make this base coat thin-you'll still be able to see thru to the leather underneath but that's ok, these are base/primer coats.
'Salmon' is pronounced 'Samon', the 'L' is silent.
You are going to begin painting now but you are not going to just put on one coat of paint. Let the first coat dry, at least 15 mins. Keep adding additional coats until the leather beneath and the scuff marks beneath the paint are no longer visible. When that is dry it is time to put on the actual paint that is the color & finished look of the shoe you desire. If you want the shoes to look dull, mix a duller/dulling agent into the paint at a ratio of: Paint: 90%. Duller: 10%. Or if you want the paint extremely dull: Paint: 85%. Duller: 15%. If you would like your shoes shiny-er: Paint: 95%: Duller: 5%.
If you use a darker color you don't need to apply as many coats.
Don't paint too close to other colors/edges w/a big paint brush. Wait until it all dries then go back and use a small paint brush.
When it is time to paint the soft fabric you will need to use 'Angelus 2-soft' with the paint at a ration of: Paint: 50%. Angelus 2 Soft: 50%. The Angelus 2 Soft is an additive that when added to the paint, after the paint dries the paint remains flexible & soft and not hard. After performing this you MUST heat-set the area you painted. U can use a hair blow dryer (but hold it close to the shoe and move it around don't hold it in one spot, or a heat gun at a further distance away). The paint w/Angelus 2 soft MUST be 'set' w/the use of heat.
Use toothpicks to scrape paint off of the sole/edge of the sole. #toothpickgang .
Matt finisher. 2 coats.
Spray finish w/the Krylon.
Damn need you to transcribe all our videos lol
Thank ypu SO MUCH for this. That product list was extremely helpful.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS
this is the only person on youtube ive seen that tells you to destroy your shoes before painting
LεαΡ were the only ones creating wearable shoes 💥💥
I was thinking, the same thing. I would never sand them, that’s so stupid. You have to open the pores of the leather and people always revert to acetone, which eats the leather. There are other products to get the paint to soak and absorb paint.
@@ederm971 doesnt Mayer if it eats a lil leather lol it gets painted right over anyway
// Dragonvok // actually it does, that’s like saying it doesn’t matter if it’s a little of your skin, you’re still put makeup on it. It doesn’t work that way if you want quality, that’s why he has to put 6 layers of paint on.
Eder Maldonado so what do you propose to use for preparing it?
Wow, I didn't have an idea how much prep does it takes to paint a pair.
Thanks for the masterclass!

you know you've mastered something when you teach it to others. big respect to you dude. I've been watching shoe customization videos all day and this hits!
I watch a lot of shoe customization videos and yours are by far the best! I'm not necessarily talking about your skills (although I don't think anyone is better than you!) I'm talking about the fact that you are confident enough to give a detailed video on how to get started and use your methods! I just found your channel and subscribed right away! Keep up the ill work👍
🤙🏽🤙🏽
There are two types of people...one like Marko who completes the video in 5 min and there are people like DeJesus
MARKO’s videos are too short and don’t actually show his process in what he does to make the shoes
Honestly on an AF1I’d like to see a colour way similar to the air Jordan 1 “Fearless” I love the shine on them
You mean the Zoom?
I subbed as soon as u said here in Chicago! U must b from the Chi, like me! 💯✌🏼keep doing your thing partna’ !!
Thank you! Great tutorial!Started on some air forces 3am this morning! Can’t wait to see how they turn out 🙏🏽
Let’s goo!
What I enjoy about your tutorials are the topics and the content of the videos sync wonderfully.
What we see is exactly what you give us. Great content.
Can’t wait to see this banger and hopefully get a pair to rock in school
Sam .Kiser11 right
this is the best colorway of custom air forces i've seen . thx for the videos
Am just starting looking into doing trainer customisation, just for myself and this was a brilliant tutorial. Thanks for your time and expertise.
Just one question (may have already been asked and answered but soooo many comments!). The heat gun - I'm assuming this is the final step in the whole process?
This Colorway was very unique I like the details on the shoes, plus I love anything that hasn't been seen before or nobody hasn't worn before. Hope to win that starter kit so I can can get started I have some great ideas on a Colorway
I have a question, would just using the Angelus leather preparer and deglazer work just fine? Or is sanding the best way to go?
Have to sand, why else would we be doing it lol
Next colorway I would like is: neon orange and dark green! 😍🔥
love this tutorial, thank you so much! one question: why do you sandpaper the shoes & is it absolutely essential for the paint to last or could one skip this step? sandpaper the shoes makes me anxious
Gotta do it if you want em to hold up
Love your videos! Thank you for your awesomeness.
I’m working on my first pair of shoes. They are actually all white Jordan 1 Low TD football cleats. Same basic leather layout as normal Jordan’s
I just finished sanding. I followed your exact instruction. I used 400, 800 and 1500 grit paper. I sanded for about 2-3 times longer than you suggested but the leather doesn’t look as scuffed as your AF1’s 🤷🏻♂️
I applied plenty of pressure but the leather doesn’t appear scuffed. It feels slightly softer, and the threads have frayed as you described.
Does this mean I’m not applying enough pressure? Or is the cleat leather treated differently?
I’m gonna try this ... this is a dope color wave 🌊 I like A1 forces again
Did it work?
Thanks bro! Im just getting started on this for a hobby and this is the best tutorial video i couldve asked for!
Love to hear it man!
i've been looking for vids that will teach me step by step on how to customize shoes and I found your vid. Thanks for the info. The best vid i ever seen.❤❤❤
Thank you for this. I've painted on just about everything except leather shoes. My question is about how does it cost for the beginner's material? Your instructions are very easy to follow. Thank you again.
Really depends on how much paint and such you need but you can definitly get going on a budget and add as you go. Heres a fully supply video so you can sorta pick and choose what you would need czcams.com/video/fVVwN2iF52E/video.html

Thank you! You’re gunna dig it 👌🏽👌🏽
I just finished my first pair and they turned out pretty good except after applying the matte finisher some spots of the shoe were shinny almost like grease if that makes since, did I do something wrong or does this happen sometimes?
The finisher might not have been mixed well.. I actually recommend switching to liquid kicks matte finish also now
Thanks for the awesome content, you’re a life saver with these videos, recommending this yesterday on the stream really gave me a clearer way of looking at the whole
Process !
Glad you ejoyed it!
i'm about to customize my first shoe, and i'm only painting certain sections of it. Do i have to prep the entire shoe? or just the parts that i'm painting?
Only parts you’re painting
By prepping you mean sanding it with regular sandpapar or the deglazer?
@@jb1002 sanding it and applying acetone and stuff to get rid of the factory finish
SMI7EY 408 both, all the steps in this video.
Hey Dillan, we are so happy with your tutorials, but now we have a question: How can we use the sandpaper on the stitching without damaging it to much? Because our first results were not that smooth as yours, but to noticeable. We hope to hear from you soon :) Thank you in advance!
Thank you! This was awesome! Doing my first pair tonight!
When you're ready to sell (if you are selling), what should the price look like? Is it up to the designer, what's considered too much or too little, & does the price vary based on how much paint & time was put into the design, or is every design the same price?
When he creased the shoe I died a little bit on the inside
🔥🔥🔥would have never of thought to put those colors together. I love navy blue it's real versatile.
Definitely!
Great episode again bro! Question about customising cleats (I know, I know...), specifically for soccer, how difficult is it to get a reliable finish that doesn’t ruin with the constant scuffing from kicking the ball? Keep up the good work!
Great video, definitely earned yourself a new subscriber. You Covered everything so clearly and gave very help/ honest advice. Appreciate it!
very good art work u did on the air force one I really like wat did too it it looking blazing hot keep up de good works u do it it's nice it's just right size for me
Do you have to use the 800 grit sandpaper? Couldn’t find it at my local hardware store
I have 400 and 1500 though
#ASKDCF
600 / 1000 can work as a substitute. If you didn't have any of em, I imagine you'd still be fine
that's good to know
congrats for your work!
I would like to know if the inside painting will leave your socks blue... or if is there anything to do so it won't happen.
Thanks!
If the color is not the color you want after its on the shoe, do you remove it with acetone or just paint over it?
I suppose it really depends on the situation, if you’re just slightly tinting the shade of the color to make it a little different than no. But if you’re doing a major color shift then yeah
A "concord" color way would be🔥
Bro that would be sick, it would kinda look like the SB dunk concord in a way . I love concord ...concord everything lol
Wow! this is the first 20 min video that I watched fully through. I bought a pair of Air Force ones and decided to try to customize them on my own because I couldn’t find anyone else and this explains everything I need to know! Those 2 minute Pinterest videos on customizing a shoe didn’t seem like it should be so simple. I’m ready to start my own project now! Thank you.
Awesome, good luck!!
Thanks for the instructional. Do you have to do the same paint mix if you’re painting a white surface, black? I saw another video of yours where you started off with a 50:50 white and dark color as a first layer. Thanks in advance
It’ll never hurt, but in the case of just painting black it won’t be necessary
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear thanks for the tip.
Great video I am wanting to get into customizing shoes and your videos are helping me a lot but I do have one question What is the difference from using the duller and the matte finisher. !!??
ORANGE AND AQUA NEVER SEEN YET PLEASEEEE ❤❤❤❤
I really don't have any interest in this, yet I watched the entire video🤣🤣 (I saw it on creator spotlight.) Nice work on the sneaks, and great video production!
Thank you for checking us out!
Great tutorial! Just asking ofc, do i really NEED to sand my shoes before painting?
I always do
If just adding an image to some Air force ones, would u still try to sand that area only or go ahead and sand the entire shoe, paint white, then paint the image?
I'd like to see a shoe done with nightmare before Christmas, my all time favorite movie 😁
I’m obsessed with the Jordan 1s and how those could be translated into a high top AF1!!
If I just want to put a few lines on parts I don't want to change color do I sand the white area and repaint it or do I just apply those lines without sanding there?
What exactly did you mix with the matte finisher? And does it avoid scuffing from the paint?
I am not going to lie, when he showed his first customs I kind of liked the way the paint cracked. 🤷🏼♂️
A “what the” colorway on some air forces would be fire
Dorian Grayson HMU @brainstorm.customs on Instagram, I got you
Hello great video I mean awesome video. Quick question we ONLY PREP the areas we want to paint correct?? Anything we're not painting its ok to not scuff???
Correct !
what kind of ratio of white to paint color do you do, if you are going for a monochromatic look? i bought the angelus olive paint and i want to have different parts of the shoe be different shades of the olive color. so how does the process change if i need to add more and more white? like the layering would be different right?
I would love to see maybe like a “VHS” colorway 🤷🏾♀️
Nice video btw👍🏾
#toothpickgang
Needed this exact tutorial. Thank you!
Question: How do you avoid brush strokes?
Viktor Wozniak I have heard to do serval layers of paint. Don’t know if that helps
Viktor Wozniak to avoid brush strokes do multiple layers of extremely thin coats of paint. When you use a lot of paint per layer the paint will lay on the shoe thicker, so the ridges (indents in a sense) made by the paint brush will be larger and more obvious.
More coats or layers of paint evenly place each layer i say about 4 coats would turn black white
do you absolutely need a finished besides the krylon finisher? will they be ok with just the krylon matte finisher spray paint?
Sorry but I was wondering if we have to sand it like is it optional or we have to sand it in order for it to work
I certainly wouldn’t waste my time doing it if it wasn’t needed
I also do custom shoes and this was a great teaching video. I learned alot. Tyvm for sharing. Cant wait to get started with all the new tricks I've learned.
How about green and pink I think that would be cool on a shoe
How do you avoid the panel sides that you don’t want to get paint on? for example the swoosh sides of the af1s
Quick question: When u don't use a deglazer/preparer or sandpaper beforehand, will the color crack off the shoe, because of certain circumstances (rain, dirt, stumbling,...) or will it certainly happen in time no matter how good you treat them? Im preparing a pair for a friend as birthday present, but i didn't really prepare it, except for simply cleaning them. Now I've already drawn the outlines of the painting. Would it be REALLY bad not preparing the shoes? The motives are mostly small and they are placed where the shoe is unlikely to bend. I'm kind of in a pinch right now ;-;
So if it’s in an area where there isn’t bending you’re a little less likely to experience it.... however the paint isn’t binding to the surface properly without prep work so it’s still pretty likely to wear off soon
DeJesus Custom Footwear Okay, thanks anyways! I'll just hope it won't crack off too much, maybe I'm going to start a second try too and give it to her as well
#ToothPickGang That navy blue and salmon color go together perfectly. I couldn’t picture it at first but I like it.
would love to see a "Have a nike day" colorway. Lovew those things #toothpickgang
Zachary Correia I’m going to do one
So if I'm painting yellow on the paintable part of a pair of white Airforce 1s do I have to mix white with the yellow to start off or can I just start painting with the yellow?
How long after everyday use do you reckon these shoes you have done would last you without major cracking and deterioration?
Doing some extreme wear testing videos in the near future!
Could you please make a video on how to clean the brushes and other stuff after painting #toothpickgang 😂
#toothpickgang
If you’re not painting an entire shoe, or even the entirety of a panel (like flowers on the original white background) should you still rough up the panel? Then paint it white? Or is that much design okay to just paint directly after deglazing..? 😭
Edit: forgot to say how much I love your in-depth videos. I’m not trying to start a business, but trying to customize some shoes for a gift so hearing someone else’s experience and tips after they’ve done their trial and error is INVALUABLE. Thank you!!
Great question! Really sanding and roughing em up is more vital when your painting entire panels and areas where creases are likely to occur... if you’re just doing a scatter floral or something like linework perhaps you can just some acetone or deglazer to remove the topcoat
So are these scratch proof? Even though you didn’t put some scratch proof sealer or is the finisher take the place of this?
Prep work takes care of everything you need for a long lasting product. Then with the finisher you’ll have no worries
Great video, thanks ! but... after passing the sandpaper, the sewing thread is damaged! isn't it an issue ???...
You can run directly over it with a nose hair trimmer or lighter to remove any of that fraying
This is really great for people just starting off, thanks for making this. #toothpickgang
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it 🤙🏽
“Have a nike day” for a color way!!
Do you need to use duller with the matte finish? Or can I just use it by itself?
It’s just not very matte unfortuantely
Awesome man! Thank you so much... It helps people trust in themselves to do this job...
this one satisfied my eyes
I want to custom Air Forces for my best friend's birthday but I've never done it and I don't have any materials... I hope to win the starter kit because that would be very helpful! #toothpickgang
Does the color in the inside of the shoes ever run? I have bad experiences with professional custom shoes and rain. Thank you for uploading this tutorial.
Nope not if heat set properly and with the correct mediums
Customizing my first pair of White Air forces and after i used the scotchbright pad it left a lot of green residue. Mostly in the stitching. How do i remove it or can i just paint over it?
chicago michael jordan custom ( with his face )
love your work man!! great work.

Hey i am a new sub and i hope to get this shoes
Hello I would like to know where you got the liquid kicks matte finisher? I've been trying to find and no luck. Also will it be fine to put the liquid kicks matte as just the finisher I want to avoid getting the angelus matte finisher then needing to add duller. The Krylon matte finish is it only best with fabrics? For the Angelus finishers is the matte the only one that needs to add duller?
I've watched a lot of your videos and am impressed with your work and the videos. I've never heard you address what the durability of the work is. Following all the steps you recommend waht's the durability in terms of not having the paint fade or crack? I expect that if you scuff the shoe against something you could obviously remove paint but in the absence of that are the shoes usable like factory ones for athletic activities or are they more of a "hanging out and looking cool" thing?
Wearable artwork, so they certainly don’t crack as soon as you put them on and walk around. But being that you put a lot of time and effort into them you could would want to be pretty careful with trying to not scuff them
i wanna see a vans inspired color way that has some checkerboard pattern on it
Wow this is so amazing, this video gave me so many tips and I really hope I win this giveaway. #toothpickgang
Do I need to use the Angelus deglazer like what else can I use
Acetone !
I was customising a Jordan 1 white, there aren’t any grey at all n I have been sanding it for 30 minutes , is that ok? Also, I used smth similar to the scotch Brit’s pad but the green residue got into the leather n even change the color a bit
JREW yup you’re doing good!
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear the green residue however got into the edges of the shoe n I was not able to clean it off, and compare to you, the amount of green residue is way more, should I stick to the scotch brite brand, thanks for replying, I really appreciate it
JREW that’s fine, you’re going to paint over it
DeJesus Custom Footwear alright thankss
Im really just tryna start my own shoe customization business having dis starter kit would help me jump start💯 #toothpickgang
Any tips you could give me bro? I'm going to do the fabric AF1s I'd like to do them the mint green the insole is coloured, or the Jordan proto max 720s "crimson" any help would be appreciated
I would like to see a stranger things colorway on the next one
would you recommend spraying adhesion promoter on leather to make the paint stick better? or is it just for plastic and rubber areas? im curious becouse i have seen some people doing that during customs
Yup we always use it, it never hurts. But it doesn’t make or break anything
What do you recommend for the front of the tongue of AF1 as the updated af1 has a leather front, and how many layers do you recommend for the sock liner
Same as the rest of the leather on the upper gotta prep it the same
I just finished a side of a custom but realized I probably didn't prep it well enough before painting. What do you suggest I do? Do I remove all the paint and reprep and repaint everything?
Yeah that’s whAt I’d suggest if the plan is for them to be worn
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear thankyou so much! Love your videos!!
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear do I just remove all the paint using acetone?
@@hckph6025 correct!
Soo... I just started with cleaning my shoes with the deglazer (it’s my first time to customize) but after seeing ... is it really necessary to clean it with sandpaper? I am scared that if I don’t do this or something I could ruin my hole pair of shoes 😅
Without sanding the paint is more likely to crack
do you think after “destroying” the shoes would posca pens help?
Awsome brother........your very very particular and professional in communicating your knowledge......great stuff!!!!
Thanks for tuning in!
Great work!... Haven't seen all your vids yet, but how do go about retaining stitch color when painting a contrasting/differing color?
Nobody seems to have that mentioned at all.
Usually I would just about repainting the stitching completely and that would be done last.
I have a question so do you mix duller and 2soft or hard and 2thin all together in a airbrush? Idk it never spits out
Make sure that you strain your mixture with a strainer before letting it into your gun!
DeJesus Custom Footwear another question so is the nozzle rubber o ring mandatory for my airbrush because when I first got it I didn’t know what it was and lost it
Quello TV yes you need it to keep nozzle cap in place
Bro the finisher do u apply right after painting or do I wait for it to dry
Wait to dry
@@DeJesusCustomFootwear omg u replied lol thankssssss
Btw can the shoes be worn like maybe once every 2 weeks if the paint cracks what should I do
And how to avoid chipping the paint
So with the spraycan of matte paint. It doesnt crack or split and adheres properly to the leather?
You mean painting with an airbrush? Or what part are you referring to
