  • Educational video showing patient example of bent or broken intramedullary rods.
Broken and bent intramedullary rod of the femur. Look at the alignment of the femur. The intramedullary rod may bend or break after fixation. If this occurs it may become a challenging problem. The bent and broken intramedullary rod of the femur was removed and replaced with a new rod.
    Replacing the IM rod:
1-guide wire is inserted and proper reaming is done.
    2-Rod insertion
3-Guide wire is removed and the rod is anchored with screws to the bone.
4-With the new rod inserted, the alignment is restored.
x-rays of the femur after replacement of the rod. This is an example of a bent IM rod of the tibia.
The patient was taken to surgery and removal of the bent intramedullary rod from the tibia was done, replacing it with a new rod.
x-ray of the tibia after removal of the bent IM rod.
    Replacing the IM rod.
x-rays of the tibia after replacement of the rod. The alignment of the tibia improved.

How was your recovery? two years ago i got hit off my motorcycle by a drunk driver. The impact fractured my femur/tibia/fibula. Had this surgery done in the femur(rod inserted through the hip into the femur) and one into the Tibia (through the knee into the tibia) and they let the fibula heal on itself. My recovery took a while.

the rod is just to keep bone straight while it heals it self. bone grows back where it was broken, the rod is not to replace the bone. the rod is taken out when bone is strong enough.

I actually asked for an Ilizarov apparatus be used instead and was told no one knew how to perform that procedure and I'd wake up with a rod and four screws. Wound up being a rod and three screws in my femur post gsw. I'll have to look into the optimal way to have the rod removed and to heal the bone as well as bone marrow. Any references?

knee pain might not go away. I had a surgery in march 2019. knee pain appeared after surgery. I did some research and found out that nerves get hurt during surgery and pain is permanent in 2 out of 3 people. Thigh pain occurs due to muscle loss and inactivity. I could not get up up to 2 months after surgery. I lost a lot of muscle weight during that time. But after I started walking with crutches I gained like 40% of them back and thigh pain is less noticeable. My bones aren't fully healed yet, I can feel the holes of the chipped area. This due to bad blood circulation.
