  • WhatsApp Threatens to Leave India over Encryption Rules | Vantage with Palki Sharma
WhatsApp has threatened to leave India amid a legal showdown with the government of India over the new IT rules issued in 2021. The rules require social media firms to find the "first originator" of information by breaking end-to-end encryption. WhatsApp has argued that breaking its end-to-end encryption would violate the fundamental right to privacy. It may also lead to similar demands and rules in other countries. WhatsApp has more than 400 million active monthly users in India and generates around $1 billion in revenue. Is WhatsApp serious about leaving India? What would be the impact? Palki Sharma tells you.

I am a software engineer, and trust me when I say this - There is no need to break encryption in order to find the originator the the message. They just need to store small metadata around the messages that's all.

I don't think you quite comprehend the problem. The issue is not finding the originator or receiver of the message; the issue is finding what the message itself was. If you don't know what the message is metadata is not going to help with the government's intended goal of finding out who is saying what. The "who" is easy, the "what" is the question.
      Good luck!

Same thing happened with VPN a few months ago. Indian Govt asked all data from VPN companies based in India. They said no. Govt was not willing to compramise on a chance to get all data so didn't make any positive change. All major VPN companies left India for Good. Same will happen for WhatsApp as well. If They have to follow Indian Law, They will have to break encryption Worldwide. Most countries will not like that and will mount lawsuits over lawsuits over WhatsApp (especially EU). So WhatsApp will readily leave India if that situation comes. All apps will leave. India will become a surveillance state like China and North Korea.

While the government here have logical reasoning here if someone use these encryption for spreading misinformation or creating a chaotic environment then it should be trackable. For that WhatsApp need middle server in between sender and receiver on top of it the company needs to storable servers where they could store all the information and it could cost millions as users in india is nearly 400millions.
