Do Muslims Practice Cremation? | Dr. Shabir Ally

  • Muslims generally bury their dead. But in some countries, Muslims have been forced to cremate deceased family members, and during the early days of COVID, there was a push to cremate bodies, thinking it might be safer. Dr. Shabir Ally says that burial rites are deeply entrenched in the Islamic tradition, marking the faith of the deceased and connecting to Muslim understandings of resurrection and judgment. On the other hand, cremations sound like a foretaste of the fire of Hell, which Muslims want to avoid. He explains that the Quran doesn't explicitly say that Muslims must be buried, so there is scope for flexibility. If it so happens that a body is cremated, God is Merciful and Just and won't hold the person accountable; instead, God will give them recompense in the Life Hereafter.

Well taken - you have covered almost all aspects of this topic beautifully. Unless there are specific circumstances; normal way is burial. >> the story of Cain and Abel:
Quran 5:30-31 But the other's passion drove him to slaying his brother; and he slew him: and thus he became one of the lost. *Thereupon God sent forth a raven which scratched the earth, to show him how he might conceal the nakedness of his brother's body.* [And Cain] cried out: 'Oh, woe is me! Am I then too weak to do what this raven did, and to conceal the nakedness of my brother's body?' - and was thereupon smitten with remorse.

This surah confirms dr. Shabirs point. Its say how you “might” conceal body by making it the norm but leaves room to bury differently in case you are forced by a government or nonbeliever and it risks your life or your family‘s life. Then in that case your are not doing something haram

Very helpful. No comments made if next-of-kin could have the ashes for final Muslim burial. Catholic church requires ashes to be buried in once place so that resurrection will happen there. Other denominations allow spreading of ashes. In a recent EWTN Q&A a question was asked if ashes could be divided into two, one for home country - country of birth; other for country of adaption. The priest was not certain and said local Bishops needs to be consulted. Handling of ashes should be concluded within 6 months as best practice.

I do not get why burial means the body will be resurrected at the exact place because isn't god In the day of judgment going to destroy the universe and earth so technically everybody body will be cremated at that process because the earth will be on fire due to it being destroyed right?

@@Chandransingham I get where your coming from but I disagree with that Jesus is going to comeback because I believe God doesn't break the laws he's made for the world like the scientific limits . No human can go to heaven unless he's died in the physical world because if god was to go against the same natural order that he has created to govern the universe then that shows that he's indecisive , impulsive and prone to making errors like humans .
For example if you were building a house and chose to make it with a certain material. Then after you make the house and you change your mind about how you built it then that shows that you cannot make your mind up .
If Jesus going to heaven didn't break his laws then why don't we see miracles like that anymore surely if your a literalist then these miracles are a regular acurence because then you believe Adam is from heaven and prophet Muhammad pbuh ascended to heaven and Jesus, supernatural jinns, Angels, jinn possessions, prophet Noah living over 500 years . See the problem by taking these miracles literally is that they do not make sense or are physically observable thus didn't happen at all. You just open a can of worms by interpreting Quran in a literal manner and blindly believing the scholars and your peers because everyone else believes it .
Quran : If you follow the majority of people on the earth, they will lead you astray from the path of God, for they follow only conjecture and surmise.

The problem is, as a western European revert, family members have to pay rent for the ground you are buried in. If the rent is not payed for again ( 2nd time after 15 years i think) your remains wil be dug up by the government and cremated to make your ground available again. So you see if you have nobody left to keep paying for you you will eventually be cremated. Thats the problem. So knowing this, is it better to be cremated from the time of death? Because it gonna be a waste of money anyway for your relatives and you wil be cremated eventually in the end.

reading history, it was the one area of Islam that turned off the Vikings when ibn Fadlan travelled north to Volga lands. For them burying the dead is considered an insult, to allow the worms and insects to eat from the corpse, while burning body allows and spreading the ashes in the wind, lifted the soul into paradise.

I must disagree with the Shaikh's comment about the Sunna being not as important as the Qur'an, the Qur’an itself speaks of the importance of the Sunnah, for example:
    (a) Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “He who obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah . . .” [an-Nisa’ 4:80] Allah described obedience to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم as being a part of obedience to Him. Then He made a connection between obedience to Him and obedience to the Prophet (peace be upon him): “O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger . . .” [an-Nisa’ 4:59]
    (b) Allah warns us not to go against the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم and states that whoever disobeys him will be doomed to eternal Hell. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “. . . And let those who oppose the Messenger’s commandment beware, lest some fitnah (trial, affliction, etc.) befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them.” [an-Nur 24:63]
    (c) Allah has made obedience to His Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم a religious duty; resisting or opposing it is a sign of hypocrisy: “”But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you [Muhammad] judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission.” [an-Nisa’ 4:65]
    (d) Allah commands His slaves to respond to take whatever comes from His Messenger صلى الله عليه و سلم: “And WHATSOEVER THE MESSENGER GIVES YOU, TAKE IT; AND WHATSOEVER HE FORBIDS YOU, ABSTAIN (FROM IT). And fear ALLAH; verily, ALLAH is Severe in punishment.” - [al-Hashr 59:7]
    (e) Allah also commands His slaves to refer all disputes to him: “. . . (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger . . .” [an-Nisa’ 4:59]
    (f) Allah has made following the way and the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم and his companions a criterion for avoiding the Hellfire: “AND WHOEVER CONTRADICTS OR OPPOSES THE MESSENGER AFTER THE RIGHT PATH HAS BEEN SHOWN CLEARLY TO HIM AND FOLLOWS OTHER THAN THE Believers’ (COMPANIONS) WAY, WE SHALL LEAVE HIM IN THE PATH HE HAS CHOSEN AND BURN HIM IN HELL!” - [an-Nisa 4:115]
In addition, Al-’Irbaad ibn Saariyah ,رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said: “Would any of you think, reclining on his couch, that Allah would only describe what is forbidden in the Qur’an? I tell you, by Allah, that I have warned and commanded and prohibited things that are as important as what is in the Qur’an, if not more so.” (Reported by Abu Dawud, Kitaab al-Khiraj wa’l-imaarah wa’l-fay’).
