    A behind the scenes story is that Teller was dangling his feet in the water for a shot and actually got bit by a piranha. The crew was shocked and asked if he was okay, and Penn just started to laugh so Teller started laughing too

    • @Yeah_Whocares
      @Yeah_Whocares Před 7 lety +297

      “It was a beautiful tank,” he continued. “I dangled my feet in and one of the fish decided to nibble on me. I’m sitting there thinking, ‘That’s pretty funny - ahh!’ So I called my doctor at 10:30 at night out of a sound sleep and asked him if I need a tetanus shot.” The doctor told him to soak his foot in Betadine.
      “The whole crew went in to help him, and I started to laugh,” Jillette said.

      With training most healthy people can go 2 or 3 minutes under water. He was only under for about 1 minute. The editing makes it look slightly longer than 1 minute, (they show the same clip of him waving the fish off repeatedly), but even with the extended editing he was under for less than 1 minute and 30 seconds
      And just FYI the guineas world record under water without breathing is a bit over 20 minutes

  • @tikaalik
    @tikaalik Před 4 lety +25

    So here’s the thing. About the story of the Brazilian prank. Sometimes parts of the river become isolated pools when the river level drops. Piranhas and many other fish are trapped in there for extended periods of time. As the pools shrink at first they are sitting ducks for caiman and predatory birds, otters, etc. The piranhas then get hungry and start to eat all the other fish until none are left. They will also eat turtles, frogs, and anything else in there. At this point even other large animals like caiman will leave. If any bird falls in the water in this situation, or an animal attempts to swim across, it could well get attacked and eaten. This is why the only large fish left are Arapaima, which sport piranha-proof armored scales over their entire body. So actually there are natural conditions when piranhas do this.

      i mean that could go for so many other animals, humans included, as well. Sometimes an injured animal or human is more dangerous than the ones that arent injured. And i mean injured both mentally or physically.

  • @skavies2351
    @skavies2351 Před 5 lety +31

    I used to have Piranhas, and one thing I noticed was they would not attack anything larger than they were, but they seemed to sort of have a hive mind. If you put one in a tank with a fish that was larger than that one Piranha, the two of them got along fine. Start adding Piranha to the tank and once you get enough of them in it so the group was larger than the fish in the tank with them, they ate it. They have a very undeserved reputation for being vicious, they are very easily scared-complete chickens.

    There is another trick (on SNL) where Teller goes underwater for a seemingly extremely long (surpassing the WR) time. Of course he had something that provided him air, otherwise he would have drowned. At some point his mask where his air hose was attached came off and water got into it, so he did not get air from it anymore.
    Penn noticed this, but did not stop the trick, because it was ultimately Teller's call if he uses the 'safe sign' they have discussed beforehand. There were a few minutes left before he was supposed to emerge, so he had to hold his breath for that time and he was technically drowning in those few minutes. Fortunately he could show that he can hold his breath quite some time and the trick went well in the audience's view.
    Penn is talking about it in his podcast, if you'd like to listen.

    I worked at an aquarium store in California. There was a guy that would come in weekly to buy any feeder fish that had died while being shipped to the store from our distributor. He would then go home and freeze them into a block of ice that he would float in his piranha tank, in order to give them some enrichment. It was most definitely illegal for him to have pet piranhas, but that guy loved those fish as if they were his own children.

    • @---cr8nw
      @---cr8nw Před 6 lety +16

      The suit is an important part of his magic. It's worth it to him to wear one, even when it will be ruined, unless other attire is necessary to a trick. If a magician gets casual when he can (even to save some money on suits), people start to catch on when he wears suits to conceal steals and switches. The cost of a good suit is peanuts to a world-class act like Penn & Teller.
