The Kindle Scribe is Amazon's answer to the Remarkable 2. It does some things better and some things worse. I wanted to know what it's like as a mobile sketchbook.

I wish Amazon partially subsidized the cost of these like with normal Kindles - for $100-150, this would make a lot of sense for average students for note taking and light art. For $300, the average student might as well get a good tablet.
How would they make any money?

@@TheSaintsVEVO in 2009, amazon found out that one of it's competitors was selling diapers at cheaper prices than theirs, because that's how amazon started as well, they took it as a threat that the company would be able to grow to their size. To cut things short, they basically sold diapers AT A LOSS to the extent of 30% cheaper for a couple of years just to shift consumers back to amazon. The company closed down in 2017.
I don't think you have to worry about amazon making money, I think you just have to push so that amazon spends on its consumers. 🤷
@@fa_rook_ak94 things like diapers it might make sense to sell at a loss (especially if its just for a few years), cause people might be drawn by cheap diapers but end up buying diapers AND some other groceries too (so amazon will make money overall). But people dont typically buy a tablet and a whole bunch of other stuff. And normal kindles make money through selling books, so no way to make money that way either with this one
@@TheSaintsVEVO book sales and kindle unlimited is their bread and butter. This is common practice. A lot of games consoles for example sell at a loss and then make the money, the REAL money, on game sales.
I love that you're reviewing these type of tablets for artistic reasons.
I am rather perplexed why Amazon is giving him this for a review from artists' standpoint. Didn't they know it is going to fail badly? You do not need to be an artist to figure that out.

Love that we can always count on brad to review stuff like this for artists. I want a eink (kindle mostly) device for reading/quick travel sketching so badly. So when I the scribe I was dying to buy it but I’m glad I seen this review cause it doesn’t seem quite there yet. One day!
Omg, this is quite a step towards my dream tablet. I don’t need all that hdr/oled stuff, I need my tablet to be naturally lit by the sunlight instead of fighting it by draining its battery. I really hope we get to full-color fast e-ink displays one day. I can even deal with limited tools and no-zoom - makes it feel more like a real paper notebook
I wanted something to replace my 200 notebooks that I use for taking notes at work. It's great for that.
I am glad you took a look at this for us Brad, it has always been a question I have had. Having watched your review, I can totally see the appeal for this when it comes to digital art and illustration (especially for that price) but it really isn't designed for that. It is more for reading and note taking, where you might draw a pie chart, graph, cross section, or annotations... something along those lines. Sketching? Yes... but don't expect to take it any further than you would on a piece of paper with an erasable pen, unless you export it into something more robust.
Would love to see a comparison of Kindle vs Remarkable 2. I test drove a Remarkable 2 last year and was very impressed with what it offered from a "paper-free" mindset to sketch and doodle.
I've always liked the idea of an e-ink drawing tablet. Having a drawing device with super long battery life and the benefits of e-ink displays is a very attractive idea. The problem is that even if the hardware is great, without good software to support drawing, it really isn't going to be useful. It's pretty obvious that Amazon had zero expectations that people would use this Kindle for drawing.
Amazon is working on regular software updates which will incorporate most of the wish list reviewed here…including sketch mode, synch with microsoft products, and more accurate erasing…give it a few months
If you annotate a lot, the battery life drops drastically, let me tell you

@@pagandeva2000 Just noticed a design flaw on my Scribe and am sending it back: the power button is on the side where your hand rests when holding and is easy to depress while reading causing the Scribe exit your book and restart…this is absolutely an inexcusable design flaw…

Great review Brad, we in the eink world were totally shocked at how limited the feature set is on the Kindle Scribe at launch. It seems that they have banked on the 300dpi screen being a winner in this market, but they've not really matched even their own closest competition in the software!
I'd love to see a video comparing the Remarkable and the Scribe. I'm particularly interested in how it feels to write with the Scribe compared to the Remarkable.
Was hoping you would review this! Very interesting, but it really needs a lot more features that could be added through firmware. We'll see if Amazon updates this aggressively.

If you don’t care particularly about the reading, Remarkable 2 is much better. Cheaper, more options for drawing.

As always an awesome video. When drawing, did you notice any hot spots on the screen? I was thinking this device would stay cooler and better for outdoor use when needed.

Great specs for the Scribe. The Mediatek chip equipped in the kindle makes it worthwhile. Always wanted a device to read and write at the same time.

Can the notes you take on Kindle Scribe be imported or transferred to a secondary device like a usb / computer? I am concerned about losing all the notes that I take on Kindle.
It's not exactly practical, it's certainly not cheap, but it's sooo beautiful 😭

Is that sticky note feature for handwriting note only? Can I copy parts of book and paste them into the sticky note? And Can I send those notes to my computer?
from the looks of it I like it. when my current Kindle eventually dies I'm gonna get one of those. it would make great e-book reader & notebook
You mention the stylus coming off in a backpack, a problem I’ve had repeatedly with Remarkable2. The scribe folio (cover) has a keeper-loop that secures the pen & keeps this from happening while packed.
If you’ve been away from a kindle for awhile, their Intro instructions need some work. Many folks have to google to find out where to tap to exit content & get to/from some menus. The web-browser isn’t supported by many common websites.
The stylus is great (love being able to swap to eraser by simply flipping over, like the Remarkable pro stylus), and the button to activate highlighter, or an alternate pen. Highlighting in eBooks can be a little clunky, as the UI sometimes advances pages instead of highlighting.
Glad to read that you're on the mend. Hubby and I had that awhile back and parts of end of it seemed to last. Just spent the morning drawing cartoons on my Samsung. I have the rM2 for writing. You asked if we wanted a comparison. For me, I honestly don't have a need for that because I love what I'm using now. Though for cartoons, I see my old Samsung screen is starting to go. This is hands down the best review of this device I have come across, especially for my needs.
I was really hoping this would be a sketchbook replacement that I could also use to read Kindle books, but it seems like it's just not quite there. It's unfortunate that there isn't an e-ink tablet on the market that fills this niche for an affordable price (most seem to be as expensive as a basic ipad). I'd be ok with a limited sketching app on the device, as long as it was easy to organize all the sketches and then manipulate them on other devices/software. From what I've read, though, the notebook function makes it hard to export individual drawings, and it's a bummer to hear that what is exported is essentially just a .jpg without any layer/vector functionality.

iPad refurbished. It's not e-ink, but it's affordable and functional.
I think it would be interesting to see where the software of the remarkable 2 is at now. I haven't really dug into it lately, but I remember there being a lot of caveats to using the device.
the software has improved for the most part. two finger undo, 3 finger redo. expanding canvas and some text editing capabilities. a lot more actually.
Could anyone recommend an e-reader works well with PDFs but also other formats, large screen (over 10 inches, over 11 if possible), with stylus (used for note taking - not graphic art) with good built and excellent price? Thanks!

I'd be interested in a compare/contrast review of the Scribe/Remarkable. I guess neither can change handwriting to type? I'm a big Kindle fan - having owned one since the old keyboard version. And I'm thinking of updating from my current Voyage - mainly for note taking while reading. But as a writer the notebook facility is definitely of interest, but only if I can export and continue writing the document... 🤔
not really an art use question, but can you use the pen to annotate on the books?
You can annotate as a post it note. So you can't write directly on the text. And to write on the PDF file you have to send it through their service. I have a Onyx Boox device and there you can annotate on books directly (like epub files)

I was hoping this would be decent and it seems to be. I have a kindle 4th gen and it still runs great and the battery still lasts for a week or 2 (it's starting to degrade after 12 years) and I'm used to the delay in response. the only thing i'm waiting on is a color e-ink screen that can be used for drawing. there are a few coming, but they aren't out just yet and aren't for drawing.

Don't hope for drawing too much. Meant for reading with very low power consumption as its base and the market demand isn't as crazy as the others. You can only do so much with that kind of requirement.
I am not a fan of Kindle but I was told that the Scribe is quite a good ereader. The only thing I want to know is, can I download apps from it? From the play store? Use my own reading app? or transfer graphs to it for work etc?
BOOX Tab Ultra ePaper Tablet runs Android, and has the google play store. Document scanning camera too. Feels like a far more compelling option. Downside it that it is pricier.
I'd love to see you check out an ONYX device! I have a couple and love them as my b/w companion devices!
Can I turn my notes into printed books?
Would be lovely if they made an e-ink sketchbook because I love how it looks in the sun and the feel of the screen.

They just grabbed the existing Kindle software and put a barebone notes app. Very disappointing for a company as big as Amazon. It doesn't even let you scribe on the freaking books.
Hey Brad, great job as usual on this video. Random question, would the galaxy S22( 2.8 milliseconds latency) be noticeably better than the note 20 ultra latency (9 milliseconds)? I'm considering upgrading soon but hesitant with so much art on my Note 20 and the pain of transferring everything over.

Some of your comments have already been implemented on the Remarkable 2. Newest features include two finger undo, three finger redo (finally!) and being able to extend the canvas when your running out of space on your page. Working with layers, moving selections. I use the RM on a daily basis for about two years and it’s a better idea generator than my iPad. it’s my starting point for a lot of projects.
Also it’s possible to use the svg-files although in my cartoon workflow I mostly send a png to my IPad to color it. I thing as a sketching device the Remarkable is still superior to its competitors but I have tried the Boox Nova Air 2 (or one of the latest Boox devices) and it comes close. The interface on the RM is more streamlined and I prefer the brushes, especially the calligraphy pen, which is a great drawing tool). Also interesting is the Supernote. They seem to be very active with their development and i see a lot of happy customers.
I will probably stick to my RM2 even though I would not recommend it at the moment because of the introduced subscription model.
I never scribble on my computer or iPad. But an e-ink device is great for exactly that, just like paper but it fits in a digital workflow.
Is it a backlight or a front light...?
Thanks for the review. I like that you walked us through using it and didn't just spout specs. I was really disappointed with this product. I want an eInk tablet to replace my random moleskin notebook, not my iPad. The software is so limited and the price too high. It was clear this was an MVP.

Welp, looks like I'll be waiting another couple years to see if the tech for e-ink tablets as a drawing tablet gets cheaper and better in hardware. Had a little hope in this device, but glad I saw your review.
Review drawing in REALME PAD X with REALME PENCIL
Another benefit of "e-ink" besides the battery life is it's also a lot healthier to stare at for long hours than a screen that constantly refreshes and is bright. Less strain on the eyes than reading a book on an iPad. I think those are the 2 main pros for it.
Thank you. All those features you mentioned seem like deal breakers for me. I'm sure that gen 2 or 3 will include all of that stuff (or maybe just a future update on the current one) so I'll wait.
Interesting how this is such a cool piece of HW and for artistic uses it seems more held back by limited software than the unique HW.

I see this as a good notebook, especially if your textbooks are on it as well. I think I would have enjoyed this when I was in grad school.
Worth noting: Audiobooks are not available on Kindle in all countries. They are in the US, but not in Australia, for example. It's a region lock, rather than an actual software difference. Also I can't even connect earbuds to mine, again, due to some region lock because if I'm using a US Amazon account, I can.
I preordered one of these. I didn't care a lot about the notetaking; I mostly wanted the bigger screen. I got it and the setup was awesome - open the kindle app on your phone and give permission and boom, automatic setup, including wifi password.
And I returned it two weeks later. The reading experience for regular books was fine, but not quite as good as my Paperwhite, which I already have two of, and it was missing a key feature - no option for two column text in landscape mode. The main drawback was weight - reading on it for a few hours became noticeably fatiguing, something not present on my Paperwhite.
It was better for reading magazines and manga than the Paperwhite . . . but not nearly as good as reading magazines and any kind of comic on my Samsung Tab 8+, which also does two column text when reading text in landscape mode.
The notetaking was fine . . . but it lacked handwriting to text, and is inferior to the tablet I already had.
In short, it was lacking two key features (handwriting to text and two column reading in landscape) and was inferior to a Paperwhite for general novel reading while also being inferior to a similarly-priced tablet for everything else, including the reading experience. Regardless of the use case, I already had something I liked better.
It's not bad. It's actually really good. I just couldn't justify keeping it when I learned that I wasn't going to be using it, and could spend the $380 total I spent on the bundle on, say, roughly 50 books. It would be like keeping Alex Smith around when you have Patrick Mahomes. Yeah, it's nice to have a really good backup . . . but it's even nicer to spend that money on something you're actually going to use, like shoring up the O-line and deepening your WR roster.
I think the fact that this a first generation device really shows up in your review. I think Amazon will most likely address your critiques in future iterations.
I am happy to see some competition in e-ink devices. I want a remarkable with android and customization options and saving files on Google drive without having to pay a subscription, lol
AFAIK, e-ink (the technology used in these displays) always blink. Each pixel is a small tube with a viscous material and small pellets in the colors white and black. The pellets move around by electric polarization but if you try to just change a few pixels from black to white, for instance, the new pixel won't be as white as the others - and that's why it blinks: it needs to reset the display. I love these displays because they really look like paper and once the pixels are set (white or black) they don't need to be energized - that's how the kindle keeps those covers when we turn it off.
That glitch scratch sound in 09:49 was going to be the end of a new laptop.
Man if they were able to add clipstudio in there, will be the ultimate dream for manga creators all in bitmaps black.

For a drawer/illustrator at $300++ I would think a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 would be more economical & productive, I would think... Nonetheless the Scribe is interesting yes.
This is a marvelous device! The mistake this reviewer makes is that he expects it to be an iPad and he is right to be disappointed. However, this is clearly an e-reader for note-taking and has the advantage of not subjecting the viewer to endless rubbish popping up on an awful bright-glazed screen. For the bibliophiles and writers among us, this is superb!

For the cost, I think this could do well. This is a reader and a writer from Amazon. And credits to Mediatek chips as well.
"If you're just getting this for taking notes you'll be fine" - actually, from other reviews, you won't be. Apparently note-taking means creating a "post-it" or memo on the eBook or PDF you're reading which can't be read off the device. If you're reading PDFs and highlighting and making margin notes, an iPad or Android tablet, or even other e-ink tablets (Remarkable, Boox...) are much better options and not too much more $$.

The 2022 Base Kindle is best value E Reader for reading right now. And as you said, get a cheap Samsung Tablet and you are getting much more than Scribe can offer

I Think that you miss the most importantly aspect for an e-reader compared to an iPad - and that is it so much better for your Eyes and brain to read on an e-reader

So, not sure if you've seen but apparently about a month ago Amazon came out with an update to their Scribe software that includes a bunch of the features you talk about in terms of it's writing/drawing capabilities, so maybe an update to your video is in order? I personally think that Super Note A6X is far better than Kindle Scribe. Having purchased the Super Note and tried it for several months, it has been a life changing experience. Super Note A6X is far more seamless. The Kindle Scribe seems to lag very often. It takes time for the text to be displayed. It is also not water resistant. The Kindle Scribe barely has any functions as opposed to the Super Note. It does not have a handwriting to text conversion, which is a very prominent feature that should be incorporated in the Kindle Scribe.
