    In this video, I do detailed analysis of the 6.8 Western vs 7mm Rem Mag vs 28 Nosler and which one you should be using in your rifle.
    I think most hunters would agree that the 7mm Remington Magnum and 28 Nosler are both fantastic cartridges for hunting a wide variety of big game. However, the 6.8 Western is much newer and is not nearly as well understood by the majority of sportsmen. All offer certain advantages to hunters, but there are some significant differences between the 6.8 Western vs 7mm Rem Mag vs 28 Nosler cartridges you should be aware of.
    Unfortunately, as is the case with many things involving the new cartridges like the 6.8 Western, there’s a lot of misinformation and marketing hype out there regarding the capabilities of the new caliber. For this reason, it’s really easy to get confused when trying to understand the actual strengths and weaknesses of that cartridge compared to more established centerfire rifle cartridges like the 28 Nosler and 7mm Remington Magnum.
    In this episode, I’m going to do a detailed comparison of the 6.8 Western vs 7mm Rem Mag vs 28 Nosler in an effort to show the differences between those cartridges so you can make an informed decision on which one will work best for you.

    I appreciate the detailed comparison. There is not much practical difference between the 7mm Magnum and the 6.8 Western. It is really an impressive cartridge. I think the 6.8 Western will have a bright future.

    Wow what great video. Tons of information, you certainly didn’t leave anything out. I love shooting the 270 for a number of reason. For me it seems to do everything well. I see the 6.8 as the new and improved 270.
    I love that it shoots high BC bullets, shoots fast and flat with a milder recoil. Plenty of energy out to 1500 yards. Faster barrel twist than the 270. I would love to buy one. However I can’t find one locally.
    Thanks for sharing

    Video great video very well put together you're very prepared you did a really good job
    I'm a 270 aqua improved owner of a very old vintage Remington rifle have done a lot of custom work too. My limitation with my rifle is the twist rate. However being able to shoot 145 Grand projectiles with a near .600 BC it's still very satisfactory. Rarely do I get past distances of 600 m and I can always adjust for things like wind and lower velocities. When I do finally shoot out the barrel and it's time to replace it I will be doing a one and seven five for a one and eight twist barrel so that I don't have any problems stabilizing those 175 grain projectiles at longer distances. Might as well take advantage of the extra six grains of powder a lot of to me through a ackley chambering

    Well, Go to you local Sporting goods/Gun store. Check what Ammo boxes are available on the shelf. And buy the rifle that has the most ammo available. If you handload, you might dwell into balistics. 7MM Rem Mag will do the same as the 6.8 western. If you want the fastest, the 28 Nosler is the one.And don't leave out the 280 Ackley Imp. Bit under a 7mm RM

    Their is much to be said for older well established cartridges! Last year I was looking to upgrade to a .300 Remington Ultra Magnum, but just as ammo was getting ridiculously hard to find, I picked up a partial Box of 7mm Magnum 150 grain Norma's and a full box of empty brass from a gentleman at a yard sale for $20 and in my past I have been given a bag of mixed empty 7mm Remington Magnum brass (yes I do reload.) I decided that now was just not a good time for the .300 RUM no matter how good it looked on paper. I hope things change soon!!!

    I was wanting to buy a deer gun that shot great out to 500 yards and was eyeballing the .270 WSM and had my mind made up, saw when this 6.8 Western came out and I didn't give it a 2nd look I mean I took the round out of the box and checked it out, but the closer I got to buying my rifle Christensen MPR my 2nd one I couldn't get it in the .270 WSM I wasn't opposed to a Christensen Ridgeline either after I bought my .300 wm in the Christensen MPR I must of got a really really really good rifle because this beast is key holeing at 300 rounds not every time but dang near, if I time my heart beat its key holeing the rifle is that fricking good! So I am sold on the Christensen brand, I shot a Fierce they are just a really fat n wide stock and it had some whip from the bedding it shot ok but for the money it wasnt close to the Christensen Id imagine Fierce will take a while to get those machines that Christensen has! Christensen was making airplane parts before so they have the best of the best machines and they are able to make rifles at the tightest tolerances possible!!! Anyway I am sold on the 6.8 Western after doing research and the Gunwerks can was making it MORE ACCURATE and no speed loss I was VERY IMPRESSED!!!! Winchester hit it out of the park with the 6.8 Western it made a round that is literally on that fine line of being a magnum but its NOT!!! I have a long range magnum so this 6.8 Western is going to be a fun build I cannot wait!!!!! Going to run the range and bluetooth system not sure which one ill see if Sig has got it where I want if not then the other choice is obvious. Cheers!!!

    We had the 6.8 SPC added about 10 years ago. The 27 Nosler is fairly new. There are also three new new 6.8x51 rounds of different design that were created to compete for the new military standard weapon to replace 308 and belt fed 556 systems (Sig 277 Fury, Textron 6.8, and 6.8 TVCM). These 6.8x51 cartridges are each new designs that don't follow old standard brass design. They have the capability of pushing the .277 faster from shorter barrels in fairly small cartridge size compared to what you would even see from magnum brass. Lots of 6.8 going on. The 6.8 Western likely got to the punch first as a civilian standard brass cartridge that does what a lot of people currently want with the long range lighter recoil trend (27 Nosler takes the higher recoil flatter trajectory crown). They will succeed where others didn't see the writing on the wall. The new military 6.8 chosen will likely be higher cost for ammo a while and more of a barrel burner - really competing with the 27 Nosler on the civilian side. The 6.8 Western chose well as a niche filling the use case similar to 6.5 Creedmoore (but offering better ballistics and energy) using soon to be ubiquitous 6.8 bullets while not competing with the new military round.

    the lack of loading components and dies and poor ammunition choices for the 6.8 is destroying it as an option. for most if you dont need that big mostly better options like PRC and 280 AI with ammunition options.

    • @jimedick9496
      @jimedick9496 Před 4 měsíci

      That’s starting to change. ADG looks like they will be producing brass for the Western, and both Lee and RSBC have dies for the 6.8 Western.
      We are learning that Hornady has been giving false velocities with their 7 PRC by a couple hundred feet.

    Why is the velocity different for the 7 Mag? It’s 2900 for the ballistics comparison and 2914 for the recoil comparison. What gives?

    • @Thebiggamehuntingblog
      @Thebiggamehuntingblog  Před rokem +1

      Good question. The ballistics comparison uses advertised factory ammo velocities, which are usually a round number. I used handloads that approximate the performance of those factory loads to calculate recoil because the powder charge is a factor in calculating recoil. Well, 2,914fps was the closest velocity my reloading handbook spit out to the one I used for the ballistic comparison, so I used that powder charge to calculate recoil. Hope that make sense.
