Do you realize there are 7 species of Moose, and they all are different sizes with the Yukon Moose the largest of all Moose.
So, to say I shoot moose is near meaning less because the smaller moose like the Shiras moose is caribou size, so deer guns are often used on these moose.
And to hunt Alaska's Yukon moose with a deer gun is asinine stupid where the hunter can get charged then killed.
I was nearly killed by a High Yukon bull Mooser my dumb ass client shot with a deer & varmint hunting gun 30-06 .
Another moose attack that made the local Anchorage news a hunter was walking along the Knik river when a Hugh bull moose can out of the brush the man shot 3 times with a deer gun 30-06 hitting the Moose in the chest and then the moose charged the man was nearly killing him and by luck the Moose broke off the attack then the man laid there for 5 hours when more hunters came and found him.
The man had 28 broken bone and a punctured lung and was close to death.
The attacking bull Moose was never found.
Never screw around in Alaska with large mean dangerous animals or the weather can kill !

He used to shoot hornady 225 interlocks but I figured out a load with 225 barnes TTSX over 67.5 gns IMR 4350 that it enjoys even more. Same hole groups at 100 yds and 2800 MV. My 308 and 6.5x55 Swedish are 20" barrels and they perform great. My 6.5x55 Swedish stays super sonic to past 1100 metres. I agree with Tate, they aid accuracy & more pleasant shooting. At 18 years old I had my first of 8 300 Weatherby rifles now that I am 64 years old.
No need for any bullet past 180 grains for the 300 Wby just be a Barns TSX - TTSX or LRX killed everything, and I grew up in NW Oregon hunting Roosevelt Elk - Black tail deer and 30 years living in Alaska my 300 Wby mags always took down Yukon Moose - black bears don't stand a chance with that kind of power and Caribou just fall on their face dead.
For the large and dangerous bears, I use a CZ 550 in 9.3x62 Mauser with exceeding book reload data to turn the 9.3 into nearly the 375 H&H mag and for the death hammer I have a Rare Brevex Mauser done in 8mm - 378 Weatherby magnum shooting Barns X blue bullets or Barns X 220 grain bullets - I loaded up on those old Barns X bullets before they became obsolete.
For the 8mm-378 the loading is a Barns x 200 grain using 115 grains of IMR 7828 for 3800 FPS ! from a Douglas 30 inch barrel.
I use the CRC dry Moly lube spray to coat the bullets for lube and protect the rifle bore.

Hey Joseph. Love the podcast. I have listened to nearly every episode. I have been contemplating a different 7mm rifle so, like many, I have been scouring the internet for information so I can make the right choice. I was confident I needed to move up from my 7mm Weatherby Magnum because the 1:10 twist would not stabilize modern 7 mm projectiles. I like my 7MM WM a ton. Stainless steel barrel and action (Rem 700 action) with an old Browning Boss muzzle breaker/tuner. It has been an accurate, reliable hunting partner for years but I thought it may be outdated especially for elk. I found an article written by you in "free library" on the 7mm WM. You had two and loved the cartridge. You mentioned the long freebore as a positive for shooting heavy for caliber projectiles. I know that Weatherby is hard to find and the ammo is expensive for everyday hunters but I think your listeners would enjoy a breakdown of the 7mm Weatherby and its comparison to 7mm PRC and 7MM Rem mag. Quite a few unique talking points on this cartridge and especially if the long freebore precludes it from the 1:8 twist for stabilization. Also, will the additional speed of 7mm WM be suitable for all bullet designs and perhaps excellent projectile choices for the 7mm WM. I know of one long-time listener that would enjoy an episode on one of Roy Weatherby's best cartridges.

You can buy used upbeat up Rem 700 rifles for the actions at pawn shops or gun shows then buy a Douglas AAA air gauge barrel then have a good gun smith finish your rifle in like the 7mm Shootings western or the thumper the 8 mm Rem mag.
Boyde's stocks you can design your own stock my model and type of checkering.

  • @jfess1911
    @jfess1911 Před měsícem

I am glad they brought up the barrel length issue. That is something that may hunters seem to ignore.
It is also important to note that a factory rifle with factory ammo can be very different than a rifle with a custom barrel and hand-loaded ammo. The 7mm SAUM, for example, gains a lot when put in a longer action and used with longer, higher-BC bullets. It becomes the equivalent of the 6.8 Western. The WSM series also gain extra oomph when loaded long. The SAAMI chamber for the 300 Win Mag is not great, so it can be a challenge to get an accurate load. Many find it overall less expensive to get a custom barrel with an improved chamber, rather than shooting box after box of ammo (or many reloads) looking for an accurate load.

It’s become obvious to me that I will never be able to get to hunt elk. Might have been able to afford when I was younger but never had enough time off from working a regular job and farming at the same time. Now at 71+ years with health issues that keep me out of the field even though I’ve got the time. Ron has commented on other shows that it’s cheaper to go to Africa than a guided western U.S. elk hunt. If not for health I would be limited to public land without guide which is probably a crap shoot at best depending on where. With all that said I’ve been accumulating so-called “elk rifles” over the years with the dream that one day everything would fall into place. Out of my stable here are my three horses all loaded with Nosler Partitions: 300 H&H, 35 Whelen and 338-06.

The problem here is shooting over massive canyons of the coast range deer guns just don't cut it.
I shot a Roosevelt bull 11 times with a 280 Rem and the problem was I wasn't able to get down the steep canyon and up to the Elk on a massive 45 degree canyon side to get close so take the shot and hope it worked, every shot fired the Elk showed a hit but the 280 Rem was just too weak to make the Elk go down on the spot.

Part of me with the horrible ammo shortage which I would have went with something more common, but at the time my Dad and one brother had a 300 Win Mag and my other brother had a 7 REM Mag. So I tried something different. Thankfully 😅 I can reload.

48ish mark Copper on Top of cup n core.
I dont disagree with those thoughts.. Agree a good bit.
However..I believe as this being on track therrs a bit more to it. BARNES ORGINALS..Shot a good deal of them n still have a supply ofdid the same ..best accuracy start with a clean barrel avoid shooting over regular jackets.
Am thinking your on right track on copper .Gonna add this ..I think the cooper being a wee bit different hardness than gliding metal ,cant get the grip they need when fired on top of others fouling.
I dont think based on liminted it matters with certain ones ie Nosler AB then Etips n Winchesters Deer Sesason then Copper Impact.
I also think it matters between Coppers ie one brand to another for same reasons. Difference in alloy one to another.
Lets not forget diffrrences in barrels as well.
You 2 guys are likely in a better postion than I to shoot n find out.!!!!!!
I mentioned the Win Deer Season n Copper Impact
Late Uncles 350 Didnt matter with the factory 150 same for 1 my 06s cant say that on anothet stacked 2 then junk on the 3 to 6 Copper .
Tried some TTSX loads in 223 then Some GMXs total junk with them.
A good bit frustrating all the way around .
One reason been cementing a good deal when this comes up.
And still havent found out IF the so called Coppers ie Win Impact, Remington Core Lockt Copper n Cut for a couple are actually 100% copper or if gliding metal same as there jackets.

I may be able to clear up one of your questions... I believe that (at least initially) Barnes has/had a patent on using pure copper in bullets. So most everything else has traditionally been an alloy. Whether the same alloy as a given company uses for it's jacketed bullets, who knows.

You better then looking at hunting areas where shooting is close for the 338 Federal.
On the western side of Oregon where the Roosevelt Elk live all hunting is over Hugh canyons and at times you might walk old logging roads and just by luck catch a heard on the old road but these Elk as extreme wise and spooky to things around them and it is why we call them the Ghost of the forest because they can vanish without a sound and all you see are new tracks and Elk poop.
When spooked these Elk can and often do keep going even over into another canyon to get distance from you.

If I can go elk hunting I will probably use the same setup it’s more accurate then my 308 and hitting harder then my 6.5!!

Bow hunters have upped the ante through skill by getting close to the game. If you are skilled enough to get under 60 yards you can save yourself an hour watching a cartridge discussion and just take your favorite cartridge. The farther the shot the more of a rifleman, the closer the shot the more of a hunter. In MHO, shooting farther than a football field away makes you more of a rifleman and not much of a hunter. 😛

I have nothing to hide in my home but nobody will search my home, car, office or the farm without a search warrant! That’s my fourth amendment right.
