In this video, I conduct a detailed comparison of the 6.8 Western, 6.5 Creedmoor, and 270 WSM cartridges.
I think many hunters would agree that the 270 Winchester Short Magnum and 6.5 Creedmoor are both good cartridges for hunting certain big game species. However, the 6.8 Western is much newer and is not nearly as well understood by the majority of sportsmen. All offer certain advantages to hunters, but there are some significant differences between the 270 WSM vs 6.8 Western vs 6.5 Creedmoor cartridges you should be aware of before purchasing a new rifle.
Unfortunately, as is the case with many things involving the new cartridges like the 6.8 Western (and even the 6.5 Creedmoor), a lot of hunters are very skeptical of the need for a new cartridge. In fact, that’s especially true when comparing the older 270 WSM to the new 6.8 Western. As you’ll learn here shortly, those two cartridges are extremely similar and the 270 WSM even outperforms the newer 6.8 Western in some areas.
At the same time, the differences between the 6.8 Western vs 6.5 Creedmoor are definitely bigger in many areas. The 6.5 Creedmoor performs surprisingly well compared to the newer, bigger, and more powerful 6.8 Western in some areas though.
In this episode, I discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the 6.8 Western vs 6.5 Creedmoor vs 270 WSM in order to give you the information necessary to choose the right one for your needs.

Oh it did! Lots of people love the .270 and they know the .270 WSM is more efficient! The 6.8 Western is the new and updated .270 WSM, that's from Winchester! I see the 6.8 Western catching fire lately after almost a year of people saying why, then they see the numbers and see its a short action round doing magnum numbers right behind a 7mm mag!

i prefer my 6.8 western. i have successfully taken whitetail deer with it at close range as well as extended range and it performed well. if i weren't going to shoot past 500 yards though, i find my standard 270 winchester very effective with low recoil and it is more cost effective to shoot. enjoyed the video. thanks for the information.

I have been pushing 140 gr Bergers out of the case in my 270 WSM to 2.901and an Australian-made monolith 130 gr outer edge to 3.02. The bullets are seated in the case neck only and not in the powder column. The Tikka T3 action and barrel have heaps of head space to be able to do this and allow for less free bore. I am very happy with the results. I am using 68grs of H4831 SC it is just showing pressure signs. Next is changing the barrel with a 1;8 twist rate to allow 150 & 170 gr Bergers for a superb long-range tack driver with more hitting power/flatter trajectory than the creed and western. Yes, it requires a long action but I never saw any big benefits with a short action, more marketing than anything else. The Red Deer here in Queensland Australia has dropped instantly.

Seems like 6.8 Western is what the 270 WSM should have been. But there may be a potential safety issue between the 270 WSM and the Western. It could be a bad deal if someone mistakenly loaded Western ammo in a 270 WSM rifle.

Under 300 6.5 cm can take any animal in NA. Handload ABLR 150 grain, Barnes LRX 127 grain , Noslar Partation 130 grain. And even Barnes TTSX 120 grain.
Any of these 4 will take down moose within 300 yard, good shot placement .
Less recoil less powder. Good shot placement will even work upto 500 yard if needed but I always prefer under 300 yard shot.

I killed a bear in Montana last month with one shot at 385 yards. Dropped him in his tracks. I am really looking forward to using it on deer and elk this fall. My 7 mm WSM started life as a 300 WSM and I had two so had one rechambered by GA Precision.. I recently went hunting in WYO for Mule deer and Antelope and brought my
WIN M 70. CRF 7 mm WSM Fed Premium 160 gr Trophy Bonded tip.. 325yds mule deer/ 200 yd Antelope. ONE SHOT EACH/ NOT ONE STEP!!
If it Ain't broke don't fix it!!
But it is now very hard to get ammo or brass for 7 WSM ?? Also 270 and 300 wsm have never failed me on 400 yd elk and 500 yd Antelope.

It kills anything I point my rifle at and can shoot under .5 five shot groups at 100 even on a bad day. If I could do it over again would I go with 6.8? I would say 6.8 western or bump up to 300 win mag. Either will do

If you look at some of the manufacturers like Bergara, they're not even making rifles in 270 Winchester now unless its in a few of their base ones, it just doesn't sell like the 28 nosler or their 6.5 prc, creedmoor rifles do to justify it. Like the new 6.8 western is nearly identical to the 270 wsm just with a different shoulder for longer higher bc bullets. Market is really starting to shift but I never thought I'd see manufacturers no longer make a 270 rifle

    • @JoeWayne84
      @JoeWayne84 Před 2 lety +2

@@dbeardsley0 yeah but that Bergara hardly Ruger or Savage haha …
270 Winchester will still have more ammo sales than 6.8
Western for years to come .
There or millions of 270 Winchesters already in the hands of hunters.
The WSM cartridges never had the popularity of the full length versions, it’s actually very similar today to the 6.5cm 6cm 6.8w and I’m sure the 7cm is coming soon haha there’s new bullets developed every so often to create rifle sales and that’s all this is some will stay around some will be like the wsm are today …

I have been seeing LOTS of 6.8 Western rounds all over and that matters! He really talking about recoil on these LOL stop it now! I think the best should be energy on target up to 500 yards strictly talking hunting....paper popping it all doesn't matter its in optics and shooter in how much a guy shoots. Most guys looking in these rounds are looking for a deer rifle up to 500 yards ethically shooting, that's just what I am looking for and at....I have a Christensen MPR in .300 win mag and its my baby for elk, bear or if I am going long range for deer where I am shooting over 500 yard shots but I am here for a deer gun shots ranging from 250-500. I loved my .270 growing up it was my first rifle when I was 12 out here in the West. I did end up shooting a massive bear 3 times behind the shoulder dropped him each shot about 120 yards he got up tore up the ground mad, so hit him again he got up tore up the ground again, popped him again all 3 shots behind the shoulder and finally he ran hard and fast after the 3rd one and that boar ran 400-500 yards to his stump hole, it was a VERY VERY big beat and it took most the day tracing him, he leaned against a tree to stop the blood, he also rolled in a creek he was mad growling and we could hear him and thats what made us not go after him right away! A buddy was with me and witnessed the whole thing and couldn't belive it! We go 2 more guys and guns and we did track him where he did end up bleeding out in the chest cavity, he was a 620 pound all muscle pit bull of a bear!!!! State record boar and his rug takes up the biggest of walls, I have 25 foot ceilings and the wall makes my elk mounts dont make the wall look small, when that bear rug went up it made my wall look small LOL just a beautiful bear and I was deer hunting didnt expect to see him so I use a .300 when Im bear hunting. Out West these animals are just big and tough. But I plan on getting just a deer gun.....guess I could skip all that BS and just go 7mm but then again Im in a belted magnum and my .300 would work. I just want a fun .270 / 6.5- 6.8 caliber for just the deer, getting it in a Christensen, or maybe a Fierce....But I am stuck on my dang Christensen's even know Fierce split off from Christensen.....I came into this leaning towards the .270 WSM and at the end of this I am still leaning towards the .270 WSM!!! If I am in Grizzley country no way am I ever going to have anything less then a 7mm!!! My .300 win mag MPR is my baby however if Im going to Alaska I may just get a .338 WM or a .338 Lepua, or a .338 Ultra Mag!!! In Alaska .338 are the magic numbers in my opinion! Id rather have more gun then not enough lol
