in that one flashback showing all the atrocities, and all these ishvalan civilians are running down the street fleeing soldiers with guns. then alex louis armstrong raises a wall with his alchemy to cut off the civilians' escape. and all you can see is armstrong crying, his tortured face now hidden in the shadow of his own wall, trying to block out the sound of the ishvalans being mercilessly gunned down on the other side of his wall

She voices characters like Catwoman from Batman Animated Movies/Video games, Kushina from Naruto, Kid Trunks from DBZ, Chun Li from Street Fighter, Mary Jane from the Spider Man PS5 game, Maka from Soul Eater, and many more! Also fun fact, the dub voice actor for Lust and Roy Mustang are actually married. “If you’re Ishvalan then Roy is a war criminal, if you’re Amestrian he’s just a state alchemist..” is actually sooo ironic because the outright genocide is codified under the guise of “war” when in reality Amestris is attacking non-militant civilians and state alchemists like Mustang slaughtered them in droves… and that is called “civil war” because of misinformation and cognitive dissonance in Amestris. The difference between that and the American Civil War (actual war) is that both sides actually opposed each other militaristically, but the Ishvalans were murdered for no real reason lol. Alchemists are war criminals but the problem didn’t start with them, unless you’re talking about Kimbley.
Roy under the law is a Hero, in the eyes of those he has murdered he’s a monster.

The outcome of a war determines whether someone is a war hero or a war criminal.
The philosopher stone is shown to seemingly defy equivalent exchange as shown by the fake priest. So in theory, having a perfect stone allows you to break the taboos of alchemy. But even central and Marcoh seems to have no clue how to make a perfect one.
It’s stated in the intro to the second episode that it is *impossible* to create something out of nothing.

Ed and Al's voice actors are the best part of the dub for me, but I guess everyone can have their opinions. Ed in particular does a great job. Maybe you guys will see it as it goes on.
Also, Vinland Saga was animated in 2019, vs FMA Brotherhood in 2009 so you should still be impressed with the scenery.
Reason why they didn't use Dr. Marco's stone to heal themselves is because they didn't want to use the stone he was using to help that Town. Dr. Marco himself says it's incomplete and he doesn't know when it'll run out so they didn't want to break it. They wanted to find a way to make their own stone and get their body's back themselves.

I was joking by suggesting that simply being bonded to his armor alchemically counts as using alchemy.
Youll see which characters participated in the Exterminations of Ishvalans (Basically every officer we see in our main cast) and if they were there, a war crime was committed. Its not shown in this show, but in the 2003 version. Roy would have PTSD flashbacks of him executing civilians and children.

I'm not understanding hate for Ed and Al's voices. Al is a 10 year old when he's put in the armor, he's gonna sound like a little kid since he doesn't age. Ed is a pre-teen/teen. I think he generally sounds like he's in his early teens.

Did you guys watch the end credit scene? Starting episode 6 there will be several end credit scenes that are important to the story
Pretty sure the apron is the same as a "fig leaf", its included in the character design to preserve some level of dignity/privacy. As an artist that works alot with body armour designs this makes a lot of sense to me for some reason.
Well idk if someone has commented on it before but Nicholas Flamel was a real alchemist, and this anime is based on real alchemy too, i mean, the writter is using alchemy real content for the books, some laws, the symbols, the things ed and al study and read, the fact they used to writte the knowledge encoded, etc.. It's really an amazing experience for people who enjoys this topic. I have a book about real alchemy stuff, and they are very accurate in a lot of things.

I love the commentary on war that is brought up often in this anime! Many of the state alchemists before edward committed awful war crimes. The way they show the differences between roy and kimbley is so good for example. The doctor is such a cool character.
And whinry and her grandma are all the boys have left. Both sides feel it and considering their losses I get why they are so over bearing. It works for me imo. Whinry gets better as the anime goes on.
Im def gonna get on the patron for this one! So many episodes that im so antsy to see how you guys felt.

I don’t get the dub hate on this show. The quality of each voice actor is either good/great, and it fits the ’European inspired setting’. For me this show, Berserk 1997 and Cyberpunk edgerunners are the only anime I prefer dubbed.
And yes, Roy is def a war criminal. Even if he is an awesome character.

However, if you're from Amestris, you would perceive Mustang as a war hero. In a war between two countries, both sides view each other as enemies, and someone has to take Mustang's position, becoming a war machine and butcher to attack the enemy. To assess whether Mustang is a war criminal or hero , we should examine whether his targets are innocent civilians or hostile soldiers.

They only lost Al's body to make their mothers body, Al subsequently died because he lacked a body and Ed brought back his soul and bound it to the armor for the price of his arm. I would guess its not possible to bring back someones soul and bind it if the soul already passed on.
Al didn't die. He was paid as a cost, stuck in a limbo. If he was dead, then Edward would have never been able to return even his soul, you CAN'T revive the dead.
@@Sassaparilla Yeah that's what I meant when I said his soul hasn't passed on dying might've been the wrong word. There was no body for his soul to inhabit but it was still stuck down there. I am not sure what would've happened with Als soul if Ed didn't bind it though? Would it just pass on after a while or would it linger in that basement/Limbo for eternity?

I think Al could be bound to the armour because he lost his whole body but his soul is still in the process of going, like it’s still lingering a bit as they were still in the process of the alchemy, if afterwards like 15 minutes later he wouldn’t be able to be saved.

It was portrayed as if Roy cause civilian casualties in his slaughters as well and like he himself isn't proud of what he did.
As I said though, as far as I remember from the show, it was portrayed that way but never confirmed or denied.
Sooo, my answer is that Roy, being the upstanding guy that he is would probably brand himself a war criminal and say he has to make up for the crimes he commited or something.
And personally I'm gonna say he's MOST LIKELY a war criminal, but I don't know the exact definition of the term or all the things that count as crimes in war 🤔
Honestly most dubs have amazing voices for side characters and antagonists but because most mcs are teenage boys it’s probably the hardest demographic to cast for and it’s where most dubs fall short. I pretty much only watch sub I really enjoyed this series dub, alphonse is amazing imo and Edward grows on you.
Well that was a baffling little discussion at the beginning. Like... I understand that he was following the orders of his fascist military dictatorship and THEY don't consider him a war criminal... but he's absolutely a war criminal by OUR standards. He a) participated in collective punishment, b) deliberately attacked civilian populations (by burning them all to death) and c) participated in an explicit, intentional genocide. There's really no ambiguity there.

So as far as war crimes go and colonel mustang, so first off war is just war, but here in our universe we have the geneva convention and a international court that decided what actions are considered war crimes, so here he would be a war criminal just because he burns people to death, use of flamethrowers in war is banned here, it wasnt qhen we used them to vietnam, and wasnt added to the rules until after... but in their world, that is simply his ability, so even in our world he might not be condemned for it, similar to how soldiers used to purposely dip their bullets in shit, so that even if the person shot survives, they would more likely die later, but if you attack a primitive tribe and they use spears dipped in shit or some poisonous plants, they wont be charged with war crimes because that is simply their war waging tech, in their world, his flames are simply his war waging ability... so he probly wouldnt be charged, having said that, we recently sent a bunch of mortar shells to ukraine that had been previously banned due to their unreliability, because in our world your not allowed to use explosives that dont work more than a certain percentage of the time... because if you shoot 100 mortar rounds at an area the enemy is at, and only 70 percent of them actually blow up, then after the fight is over, there are 30 live shells that were already supposed to go off are just spread out over the area... so people are rebuilding and some kids are playing, and step on something and explode... which is something we did in a few places and still have random deaths due to it to this day, once again only banned after we did it... having said all that, who is the authority that is going to say that colonel mustang, or the people who ordered him to do it, was committing war crimes? His own country who he was fighting for and ordered him to do it?
