As Canada's first transcontinental railroad, CP did play an important part in the formation of the country, joining east to west and making travel & trade cross country possible. Over the years, CP owned interests in many other companies in various industries & sectors, but over the last 10-20 years has sold off many of those interests.
Looks like the Railroad was the biggest money maker to this day and made enough money to start up other miscellaneous businesses along the way the way then eventually sold
Well all railroads did that across North America both US and Canada, they were the ones deciding where hubs would be so naturally cities grew around them, and since the government gave them parcels of land to build the railroads they used them as best they could to generate revenue since building a railroad is a heavy financial burden. Yes CP received a large number of grants from the government of Canada, but the Canada we know today wouldn't exist if it wasn't for CP.
