- Hey everybody, we are somewhere new!
We are in Siquijor and found a small home in a quiet part of the island. Away from the tourists and expensive hotels, we found one for the price of $1 a day. Super close to a secret beach and on the ocean we feel like we've hit the jackpot!
We wanted to try something new and maybe show viewers or people interested the real province life and how people live here. No fancy apartments or fancy living standards, this is the typical lifestyle of the Philippines.
Cutting expenses and saving money allows us to do so much more with our time and we love this off the grid lifestyle.
Please subscribe and join our journey to exploring the different provinces of the Philippines and living life as locals.
PS. People asked for a button or way to donate. This channel is free and more of a passion project so it's not needed. But if you'd love to, you may buy me a coffee using this link:

Not sure what your budget is, but a lot of the resorts in Siquijor will rent you a room by the month for very reasonable rates. Also a lot of houses on the beach for low hundreds. That place would be a little to "roughing it" for me. But to each his own...😁
Hey Happy Guy! Yeah we are doing that as well. We have a place near San Juan which is on the other side of the island. Its a smaller room but has an indoor bathroom/generator. You’re right about roughing it! Some people have reached out about finding low monthly rentals and you make a good point.

Would love more details.
This is my type of living.
Love it.
I d love that but do you have ovens or just hot plates? Also I'm a bigger person 6 2 220-260 depending on time of year. Is there and price of meats aka steak, pirk, chicken, eggs, fish. Fish not problem. Can you fish for your on food? Can you hunt there? Thx
when i go to philipines, i bring my walmart ice fishing 4 person fishing tent and plump it down and that's how i sleep every night, FREE. While i put my money at my friend's lockbox in his condo, and i just take whatever i need for the few days.
When I stay with my girlfriend in the Philippines you realize how many material things we have in the States and how little I need to be comfortable and happy in the Philppines
Couldn't agree more, I think minimalists do really well here. I felt my mind 'reset' little by little the longer I stayed here
The more possesion you have the more stress.
Perfect analogy!❤❤❤
Simplicity teaches us to appreciate more the stuff we have in life. Contentment is the real happiness in this world.
💯! 🌴🌴🌴👍
If you are on a budget, your place is perfect. For as long as you are happy there is nothing you can ask for more. That's life....
So strange that all of that minimal things you have but your smile is ear to ear, thats priceless. I could do that simple hut. Look what's in front of it, the heavenly nature that my beloved and beautiful Philippines offers. 🇵🇭 🫶
Thanks! When I decided to pack my things and leave, that’s when I realized that most of the things I own don’t really have VALUE to me.
Yes YOU CANNOT BUY HAPPINESS, ALL MATERIALS THINGS THAT WE POSSESS IS NOT IMPORTANT ANyMORE , WE ONLY HAVE ONE LIFE TO LIVE , SO MAKE THE MOST OF IT ….LIFE IS HOW YOU MAKE IT OR LIVE IT ✌️✌️✌️👍👌
i’m a Filipino living in the US now but for a long time lived on an island south of the Phils. My advice is, please be careful, be cautious always think of safety. Filipinos are friendly and kind by nature but as always in any place and any culture there are bad guys too. Goodluck!
Safety was my thought, I've had a gun in reach all my life and feel almost naked when I'm in the Philippines, I'd have to know my neighbors really well and feel they are looking out for me to stay in that home. Looks like a place to have a Cobra visiting with you
ya, go back to the ussa, its so much safer and better.
This is the Philippine experience that most of the vloggers didn't show or at least they didn't experience. Most of Filipino lived this way. It's heartwarming to see you represent these kind of life of the Filipino. When I saw the mattress I get to tell that's were I sleep, or when I see the CR, that looks like our CR too. Kudos
Love it !
Exactly what I am coming there for. ..
The experiences ..the culture, exploring and really enjoying the entire country over time ..
So much to see ...
It's nice to be in the province and live simple, I can relate. From a older expat who has lived here several years please find a way to really secure the things that are important to you like passport and documents with electronics. Stick close to home in the evening with your partner. The Philippines is my home and Iv'e never had an issue but I know a few that have. Just be smart and enjoy your journey my friend. Take care and God bless.
I’ll keep this in mind. Thanks!
I'm a Native American, and let me tell you, I am always impressed when I see white young Americans having the experience of life out of their comfort zone. These experiences make you a well rounded person. This is a marvelous video, thank you...🌴🌴🌴👋
Yeah sure is good here in the Philippines
I'm native too , from north Dakota
I was in the army for 22 years, spent many nights out in the field, many times I slept on top of my vehicles. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣Simple is good, and not having to pay huge bills will give you peace.
@@matthewadams9900 this would have been prime while in the field!
It's good to see you immersing into the way of life of most of the locals.. I love to follow your adventure. From California.
Hey as long as your happy and comfortable, and being wise on expense, that is impressive. Good job Kuya Devan 👊😎🇵🇭
Whatever happens - this will be an adventure you will never regret!
Thanks John! That’s how I see it too..
Im kinda proud and embarrassed at the same time, we were in fact living happily in "shanties" but then litters and trash everwhere , being filipino born and raised in the province, i think info campaign /implementation about cleanliness and orderliness should make a big difference in the care of environment in small villages and towns
I agree. Im from Manila and the lack of discipline from the Manilenos is brutal. I just went to Marikina City though and it is sooo clean. Its really the citizens and the local govt that should work hand in hand.
I’ve been to Manila multiple times but I feel like it’s very crowded, not-so-clean, and it’s very overwhelming for me.
wow. this is a gem if one is frugal and not picky.
Yes! It’s a little uncomfortable at first but it gets better.
That's quite a minimalistic accommodation you guys got there. I grew up in a similar living situation, but living in the US has spoiled me (creature comforts are nice, but it does make one soft). When I eventually go back to the philippines I may have to get used to spartan accommodations again.
It took time for me to adjust. Good thing we’re mostly exploring the island during the day.
When are you going back?
@@KuyaDevan sometime early next year.
Humbling experience. Discovering different folks with different strokes ❤️😊👍
For a guy your age, what you're doing will serve you the rest of your life.
If you can find comfort and kindness in the most sparse of environments, your life will be a full and happy one!
New sub here, at first its hard to handle but as time go by you get use to it and then realize that even a good shower from an inexpensive hotel could be a heaven to you. Keep going I hope to see a thousand more subscribers each day.
I grew up in a house with no running water and an outhouse. We actually had a cistern for rain water. Yes, I’m capable of living this way, but why the hell would I return to poverty?
I am amazed you can adapt to a simple province life .. take care
Great find! Years ago I traveled to the Sinai Peninsula on the Red Sea and found a comfortable room for $1.50 per night. Right on the beach. This video reminded me of that. Thank you!
I lived in Makati for 3 yrs while working at one of the hotels ( The Mandarin). It was possibly the happiest yrs I have lived to date. Back in the Bay Area now and disgusted by all the materialism and greed here. I have already decided to move back to Maybe Davao. The simple happy life is for me.
New subscriber here! Welcome to the Philippines! Enjoy! God Bless you both & your CZcams channel! Keep posting for the World to enjoy! 👍🇵🇭❤🙏
Siquijor, my province, is where you recently moved. Excellent for you for choosing my region, and if you don't mind my asking, whereabouts on the island do you reside? When I return from my trip overseas, I hope to see you there. On the island, you can discover a better, more affordable rental home. To make it a little more hospitable and appealing, you can perform some little repairs. But if you prefer it the way it is, then so be it.
We’re only gonna be staying for a month or two here in Siquijor. Hope to see you!
If you live in this kind of places you need to learn how to cook, build houses or repair houses, and plant crops, you can live there without using any money if you have suffecient food crops in your backyard in a day. Im a Filipino and thats my dream as a man.
I'm subscribing just so I can see where the road ahead will lead you and the experiences you will gain along the way. So rooting for you to succeed, buddy.
Thanks Ram, let's find out together. Take care appreciate you
Wow! Great find!
Nice one. I stayed in a place like that 20 years ago in Thailand. Simple is good.
I hope you can look back 25 years from now, and say the Philippines was a great experience for you! Have fun… ✅😁
Hope the lessor improves the bath room and install white tiles on the floor and even half in height of the wall also so it will look neat . Also needs a bigger plastic water container so the user will have enough . Also 2 big hangers attached to the wall for towel and clothes of the user, and something to put essentials like shampoo and bath soap.
New sub here from NY.
After 51 years, I will visit the Philippines end of August, considering retirement, can’t decide where yet.
I got quite spoiled living in the U.S. but I know I could go rustic and happy with less stuff again. So much stuff to let go ….
Enjoy a simple life, in harmony with nature, in the islands. Best wishes to you.
You can try Bicol region, there’s lot of nice beaches and unspoiled nature you can visit and not so much tourists.
Looks like a great place, thank you for sharing.
Love that basic house too🙏 awesome beach!
Wow that is a very cool place! Very cheap and amazing! Enjoy and Keep safe!
You're so simple. Very humble 👍🏻❤️
You are a what we call in the Philippines as "koboy" I guess the slang came fro cowboy. You are not picky, go with the flow and just an overall stand up guy. 👊
I really appreciate your support!
Love it! Great videos, thanks for sharing
When I was a boy, I was living in such conditions. No sure I can survive such conditions any longer.
Definitely not for everyone, I think we all grow in and out of housing comforts. Thanks Qing!
Exactly right. It is all "fun" until you realize you are truly broke, didn't build wealth, or get extremely sick.
We usually live as a farmer, construction worker, fishermen, trader usually in the province and of course in the city casual as city worker we don't have technology like Japan and America
It's surprisingly comfy because youre not stressed anymore. Especially with a smiling filipina sitting on your bed life sounds great.
I think so too :)
Just saw Steve recommend you.Good channel,good luck,and God bless.🙏👍🇵🇭🌺🏝️🇺🇸
Nice beach! 😊
Thats a lifestyle change. I give u props
Wow…a humble and simple life of an American living in the 🇵🇭 You’ve been to a few places. Which one is your fav so far? Btw a new subscriber.
Mindoro Island is my favorite so far. Here in Siquijor it's nice as well but Mindoro has zero tourists and the southern part of the island (San Jose) has an amazing downtown and beach boardwalk. The issue with Mindoro is the brownouts everyday, i think right now they only have 4 hours of electricity each day. Thanks for subscribing !
welcome to our country my friend ,,enjoy and relax
Salamat kaibigan! Most Filipinos call me ‘my friend’ and I think it’s adorable :)
So happy you guys are in a great spot! Nice video
Thank you, hope everything is good with you
You are living the dream. Keeping it simple and cheap. Maximizing your stay in Paradise by minimizing your cost. I do have to ask how you secure your laptops when it's not practical to carry them with you.
My backpack has a laptop slot, one of those like pouches for it near the strong part of the backpack. So it goes inside and I bring it with me in that. Thanks wicker, it's not just about maximizing stay but experiencing different parts of the island. This is the eastern side but we are traveling and staying at different places on the island as well! Take care
If you're still living there you might want to get screening for those open area's up by the ceiling, you get the breeze and keep out the bugs, if you haven't already nailed some screening up there.
I'm a new subscriber! Will look forward to your next adventures.
This means a lot! Salamat :)
Maganda po ..
Thats simple and I genuinely loved the real Filipino style ..and .its look cool over there no need fan or aircond ...
What a find a true gem of a place absolutely stunning 💕
Awesome 👏we enjoyed Sijuijor so much 🙏
Good job man... traveling and living in that manner will help you in the future. God Bless you two.
Steve sent me, so I'll be checking you out!
Appreciate that, Steve is a great guy!
Welcome to Siquijor,God bless ❤️ I am your new Subscriber
I like the house on the beach. thanks for sharing.
Heard about your channel from "The Philippine Info Channel"...
I live off-grid in a solar powered shipping container, I can definitely do this🙂
Thank you 👍
Its like the white version of "Coming to America "...when Eddie and Arsenio arrived in the ghetto and announced "we seek meager accommodations". Kudos for being adventurous.
I rented a hut like that in the caribbean with the open roof, as long as you have a mosquito net over the bed and there is a breeze it is actually very comfortable, no ac needed. Can get noisy tho with music, cicadae or roosters
Or noise from barking dogs.
Wow what a beach
It's true that you're young, everything is easier, but still congratulations for your adaptability, without causing you too many problems.
So many options in the Philippines for every budget. If you are willing to (or just must) live cheap, than this is a really cool place that will do the job, and you will could then spend more money on traveling, entertainment, and eating in a tropical paradise. My internet in Alabama is $73 which is more than double the cost of this place. Great find guys.
self-sealing plastics are handy to protect your laptops & gadgets from a heavy downpour and even typhoon
I have been a victim of the rainstorms while on a motorbike here hahaha
I lived in a broken down apartment once for a couple of months in my twenties and thought it was fine until finally one day I realized it was pretty bad, so I moved to a better place. The same realization may occur to you too.
hey parr, totally agree. We had this place for a month, while also having another rental in San Juan. Couldn't beat the value of having a peaceful spot like this for relaxing days and having a base on that part of the island! Also, unreal the internet/phone speeds we had there, best internet on the whole island strangely enough
Stay healthy and safe always Deven and your GF. I do not skip your add. Pls. dont skip the add in Deven's vlog
Its a way of helping him. Be inspired and create more videos.
Salamat sa support! Too bad my videos are not monetized yet hehehe
Love this ❤️
The price is simply fantastic. I will remember this place!
I got a 3 bedroom boarding house in Manukan, Zambaonga del Norte, Philippines for only 90$ a month. It’s a 2 minute walk away from the beach. Please if youre interested!
Very humbling..😊new sub here..enjoy your stay in your modest humble home..it's really the right attitude what really matters and what makes you happy..more power to your channel..filipinos love foreigners who really go out of their comfort zones to really feel and experience this..stay safe..😊❤️🇵🇭
Hey Vittoria yes I agree. Many foreigners come here and stay in their 'bubbles', they don't try to learn the language, interact or make friends with local. Nothing wrong with this, but that's how I want to live here!
Great content brother !!!🙏🏻👍❤️
Appreciate you, currently in Cebu for a few months have to catch up one day soon. God bless
Nice vlog. I let the adds run to give back in a small way for your channel.
Appreciate that Robert, are you in the Philippines?
Jen and I have been thinking about doing something like this on our next visit so that I can get an idea what it is like to live in the provinces. I must say it looks like everything is open In that little hut. I don't think I would be comfortable with that. The Philippines is . Mostly safe with Lovely helpful people but there are bad elements there too.
Awesome ❤
Wow Adventurous
One of my bucket list Is to visit siquijor , new subscriber here 😊
You should definitely visit this amazing island! Thanks for subscribing :)
Thats cheap for a temporary stay….u always on the move anyway…save the money and enjoy life.
Where was this place advertised? Great video my friend
Your low rent is amazing. You did go into your apartment rental situation. I would love to hear more about just like how the plumbing works. What your experience with electricity and Wi-Fi is, noise levels, etc.
Noise pollution in the Philippines you get used to. Barking dogs, roosters, animals, motorcycles or cars but I got used to these sounds after a month or two. Actually cellphone reception here is full 5g, can watch Netflix and download things with zero lag which is nice. We don't even use the wifi the phones are so fast it's unbelievable. Plumbing and electricity I'm not so sure on to be honest
I will not complain with that price…..keep vlogging Devon..
Hi Kuya Devan. I just found u today and liked ur reasons for findinh my country suits your taste now. Hope u will love it here. I still call u kuya tho i am way, way older than you. US has some positive things there too. But hope u will find the simple life here good for you. But don't forget your online livelihood. It will sustain your fun here in the Philippines. I will be watching for ur future vlogs. Thanks for promoting the culture & language. Mabuhay ka kuya. 😊😁
Hello! Thanks for your kind words. Yeah the US definitely has a lot to offer, I miss many things from there every day. I will tell you, sometimes living in the province, time SLOWS down. People aren't in a hurry, people take their time and it is sometimes hard to motivate myself to work as much as I should be sometimes! God bless
That’s beautiful but a hard life I’m sue there is a bright side when you look for them the beach is magnificent
That sounds interesting, Devan. As a digital nomad, I don't mind staying in a place like this. However, I am curious about the internet availability at your location
Wow. I would love to trade places with you right now, finding, in what seems to be a quiet village, simple lodging that's a stone's throw away from the beach. Whooo, picturing warm breezes right now.
jd thx for this, yes it's very nice. The 'warm breezes' you're referring to are more like blistering panes of heat haha. Heat wave here is no joke, but there's an ocean and a river to do your laundry in/swim. Might post a short about doing laundry in the river here super fun and cool
@@KuyaDevan @Kuya Devan oh yeah the hellish heat and humidity of summer in the Philippines. 😄 Do post laundry at the river.
Laundry in the River 😂😅😂✌️✌️✌️👌👍🙌🇺🇸💕
Wow that's great man
OMG! Wow
More power to you. I couldn't do it myself. I need more comforts haha. I like my western lifestyle here.
Just be safe guys♥️
Wrlcome to Siquijor island 👍👍👍💚 we live in Lazi, Siquijor. Near Cambugahay falls.
Hopefully we can explore Cambugahay falls!
Beautiful turquoise waters….!!!! Money can’t buy you happiness.
Hi there I'm new in my country no
Winter season
No tornadoes
Bears and wolves and lion
We have typhoon yearly or monthly
We have hot temperature
We don't have nuke to produce electricity
So live here is not always good 😊,so you must be patient simply but happy
Thats house is amazing
Cant beat your price but we did find a nice 2 bedroom apt for $115 usd.
Island life, baby!
Imagine the place during rainy season.
Some of our stuff got wet 😂
Great calm filming and camera rotation. May I ask what camera and equipment do you use and how do you rotate the camera?
I’m using a GoPro Hero 11 :)
Devan, rainy season is coming... although it might be delayed by "El niño".... . you need to prepare for the worst..... watching from Tagaytay City
Hey Dan only in Siquijor a few more weeks so this is not long term. Yea I've seen reports of El niño and the upcoming weather. Love tagaytay, it felt a little too crowded for me though, the traffic that builds up in the afternoon!
Spent many months on Siquijor, and know most areas. Only problem with living in such a place as you have found, is that someone will think " oh theres a rich puti kano" maybe he has some stuff I can borrow/take. The chickens.. yeah no need for an alarm at 4am with them. Well done though for trying.. other good islands to enjoy would be Bantayan, Romblon, Guimaras. Biliran. Different feeling and atmosphere in each one.
We wanted to go to Guimaras but were worried we wouldn't have good/stable internet. Back in Cavite right now though. Thanks for those suggestions, have not heard of Biliran
Nice location and great deal! Do they have any jackfruit trees growing near by? I like that real island experience.👍🍍🐠🥭
I’m not sure if I’ve seen jackfruit trees 🤔
It’s amazing to me that the chilis in the carenderias are picked from their plants
