eBay Pre 1980s TOY Repair Challenge PART 3

- Hi, here is the 3rd Part of the new eBay repair challenge between me and Steve from TronicsFix (UK vs USA). Steve (USA) is a professional fixer of modern games consoles and I (UK) like to tinker and try and fix anything. Steve won the last challenge in 2018. This time we are attempting to repair broken toys that were first introduced before 1980, so we both have the same chance of winning :-)
We can buy and sell up to 5 items and they have to be bought and sold on eBay. We will start with £150 ($200) but we can let the profits roll onto the next item. The winner will be the one with the most percentage profit made over the 5 items. NOT the most amount of money made but the biggest percentage increase. I think in this 2nd challenge series 'Team UK' stands a very good chance of success (finger crossed).
Many thanks, Vince.

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. - Jak na to + styl
Ha, ha...GREAT ending! You're still doing better than me. I lost a lot on that Big Bird clock! If we could leave them for sale longer and wait for that right buyer we could probably make a lot more but just having mine for sale on auction for a week was rough! Oh well, two more items to go!
Thanks Steve, yes I fully agree. These items are so rare they need to be on a buy it now for 6 months to find the right buyer. Not enough views on the week or 10 day auctions. (still fun though). Hoping your video is out later tonight :-) Steve...just looked at your Instagram!!!! $1.25 I would have bought it for 10 times that price. I loved that clock. I should be happy as it puts 'Team UK' in a better place to win but it was worth way more than that!
Ya, I could have gotten much more if I had it up longer but that's part of the fun of the competition! Whether or not I lost or made money it was a really fun and interesting fix for me.
You and @tronicsfix Rock! I love this series so much. Sharing it in whatever geek dad forum or group I am a part of. Please do season 3! Make it specific as well like Disney pre-90s or something like that. Hope to see soooo much more. Thank you both.
This series is a lot of fun! I've seen Vinces' videos, now off to watch yours @TronicsFix! ;)
sorry to hear your recent Health diagnosis Steve and wishing you a speedy recovery and Good health for the future
I enjoy your videos very much, I am 70 and remember Andy Pandy Looby Lou on TV (B/W) in the 1950's
I will see if i can find it in the cartoon tv app on my phone and watch
Ditto Mr Goodman, I too am 70, and how much kinder and better adjusted we grew up on our regular diet of "Watch With Mother". I remember watching it in the afternoons whilst Mum did the ironing.
Andy Pandy, (see Nathan Mead above for Video link)

These day's, (it's called PROGRESS) the children would be sent to their rooms where they can't be supervised, to play "Shoot-em-up' games and PROGRESS on to the likes of: "Grand Theft Auto" on their consoles, then parents wonder why they grow up with a propensity towards Violence or in extreme cases 'Twisted Killers' Rant Over!
DUDE, I LOVE THIS VIDEO!! The lengths you go to to try and understand the technology, and the fact that you make long form videos where you show all the majorly important thought process behind parsing out the inner workings is just awesome to watch. Tronicsfix led me here, but you, yourself, earned the sub 5 times over.
That ending! LMAO!!!!
The fix 6/10.
Entertainment value 10/10.
Well done. Your dedication to get this little demon talking again is impressive. He truly is the stuff of nightmares.
Awesome fix mate, I stitched a button on one of my shirts and it lasted a whole month before it came off again..
Haha, for a bloke I say you did well :-)
Used to watch this as a child in the late 60's and I think he is saying "have you seen Looby Loo?". The show was Watch With Mother and Andy Pandy, Looby Loo and Ted lived in a laundry hamper .
I think the other phrase is 'Hello - I am Andy Pandy'
Also shown as reboot in 2002.
I know exactly where Mattel’s headquarters was for decades. It was near LAX international airport. I really enjoyed your diagnosing the problem and your ‘solutions.’ Thanks for the entertainment
. Keep ‘em coming.
might be worth looking in antique shops etc. i wouldnt recommend cleaning the tracks with anything sharp will cause the tracks to be even more scratched.
One of your better videos Vince. It comes out really good in the end. If you look at the strip down, you can see the parts of the record that have been stripped off due to the disc spinning too fast. They are small black strands. I really do admire your tenacity. Your electronics videos make me scream at the screen with frustration, as electronics, and rework in particular is what I love to do. But good on yer for filming it all and putting it up for the world. New subscriber.
Great job Vince, not an easy project! Being a child of the 70's, I had a pull-cord Yertle the Turtle, in fact, I may still have it in a box in the garage.
Excellent Vince. For the first time, you showed out your comedy talent! Thousand thumbs up!!! :-)))
Absolutely loved this video, especially the outro. You sure don't give up on your repairs, i admire your effort. You have my respect, im guessing thats the difference when you do something for the love of your craft and not for work or money.
That was so funny, i grinned from ear to ear. Thanks for not leaving us on a sour note. You'll get em next time. Great job and thanks for trying so hard.
Awesome video as always! A bit of tough luck with this one here, but you definitely did everything you could. It’s crazy, I would much rather settle in with a bowl of popcorn and watch these repair videos than head to the cinema for the latest film. I’m looking forward to the rest of the competition. Cheers!
Well that is great to hear. Thank you so much :-)
This player mechanism was an evolution of Mattel's earlier unit used in a toy called Robbie The Robot who said, "I am Robbie Robot. I was made on Mars."
There were dozens of these units with different records in them. This design first appeared in "Larry The Lion" a hand puppet that would say different things each time you pulled the cord: "I'm Larry the lion.", "Roar!" "Oops, I scared myself." etc. (Larry was voiced by famous voice actor Mel Blanc.) There was also a non-puppet version in the early 70s.
I recall that the mechanism that the belt spun was a governor very much like the type found in many machines (and automobile distributors) where the weights would spread out as the unit spun causing drag and slowing the record to a usable speed. Quite ingenious. Most of these were capable of saying multiple things. It was later evolved into a circular toy with a knob to select the track to be played and there were a couple of versions, one doing animal noises being the best known. ("The cow says Mooo!", etc.)
This stuff was around for quite a long time, until digital versions took over most of the market. These were capable of surprisingly clear when new but the record being made of polystyrene and the crude needle assembly soon wore things to a noisy mess. But the child would usually tire of the things before then and it would be knocked and thrown around until donated to some thrift store or such.
Ray Rooney and now the robot is saying “my battery is low and it’s getting dark”
Rip OPPY
yeah to add to the govenor in this use its basically a centrifugal cutch exact same priciple (think lawnmower or automatic moped etc :)
You doughnut, Vince. You didn’t keep it frozen like it said on the box! 😂
Good fix Vince! I loved the ending that you made! I was like what is going on??? It sucked that it did not sell that much though. Keep up the good work!
He may have cost you the competition, but at least you’ve learnt something. I thought it was really interesting that there’s a mini record player inside him.
This man is the definition of dedication.
I often repair bits and pieces like you, but you're a braver man than me to touch something like that. I wouldn't have the patience.😜
Happy you did this i just love my old doll and now i will try to fix it! Thank you
It looked like the seam to go after was the one on the back side bottom. Hard to say without seeing it up close though. I love his game you are to jump in to any area!
my friend you have the Patience of a saint well done
In regards to the pull string toys... in that era, records were the dominant cheapest to make audio format. Until digital recording chips, most toys either had a battery or pull string record player in them.
Haha just finished, the skit at the end was amazing!!
LOL the end .... I dont mind if it was fully fixed, or it cost the compteition, but the end was hilarious.
Epic video! Don't want to ruin the surprise ending, but the skit was hilarious. Love your videos.
I haven't laughed that much in a while thank you for a great video and keep up the great work
Awesome video as always, loving this series so far. Shame it sold for so little, but I suppose it was a gamble. Loved the ending too. :D
I admire your patience!
Haha I enjoyed that, talk about dog with a bone, 6h messing with the voice box wow. Thanks for sharing
You can clean records up from dirt using pva wood glue letting it set then peeling off I don't think that would remove super glue though ...keep up the good work
LOL @ the ending - made me laugh! =D Very intersting repair!!! I suspect the super glue perhaps didn't help, but as you say - it will have been thrown around and abused, the record will have numerous scratches! I would have been tempted to put the fabric inside one of those "bra protector bags" and stuck it into the washing machine on "delicates". But it still came out looking great! It's sad it didn't sell for much though =/ Well done for sticking with it to the end and sharing it!
Imagine your kids pulling the string on that numerous times per day - it would drive you loopy!!!
Haha, luckily the kids showed zero interest in this one. Yes the washing machine in a protective bag would have been a better job, might have got the stains out of his feet. Looking back I wish I had done the research first as it might have worked perfectly, the super glue and all the mucking around with the spring probably made loads of scratches. But then it wouldn't have been as interesting for me as half the fun is working out where it all goes and how it works without reading it somewhere first. Even if the voice was perfect I don't think I would have got any more money. I obviously over payed for him massively but I didn't know at the time. Mr Pandy had the last laugh :-)
Having said that - I just had a thought - maybe any paint on the head might come off in a washing machine! So it's probably safer the way you did it =D
I feel like I am watching a toy story autopsy :)
The skecth at the end was hilarious, great job vince :D
HA HA....I think this is the funniest video yet, Vince! Great content!
Your patience is amazing....Andy Pandy would have landed four houses away within two hours!
Haha, I was very close to losing it with him :-)
If your super glue is CA glue: use water to harden it faster. CA hardens while extracting humidity from the air. For the next time keep everyting away which should not get in contact with glue. 😊
The end was epic! Thank you! :) You should make some of the episods with this kind of comedy at the end. Maybe even a playlist with the short clips. Beautiful!
hahaha i loved the acting at the end. Great video Vince! choose wisely your next item or you will loose for sure!
That ending was amazing!
Ha ha! Great video and ending Vince. Are you sure Andy wasnt saying "Have I sent you loopy?" Keep up the great videos Vince!
Yes pull string toys had issues with getting around a finger or a toe and cutting of the circulation.
Good way to start a Friday morning in the US. Kettle boiled, coffee brewed, protein shake prepared and now this. Choice!
Thanks for this video. I'm about to try my hand at the same fix on a Monkees (the TV band) hand puppet. Facing all the same problems. Greetings from Georgia USA.
CA glue with an accelerator is the key 'google CA glue (look for blog - cyanoacrylate) tells you what you need to know, also record cleaning use IPA diluted with Distilled water, Loved this video I remember Andy Pandy
Nice try , i would have thrown it clear out the freaking window.
They were never made to be taken apart you just wiped them down with a damp cloth and that was it.
Yes i do remember Andy as a kid , and it was around the same time another kids programme which was called Hectors House.
Andy would have had a bonnet on his head.
cheers
Shayne.
"I've never taken apart a record, but I think..."
"So this is the record here, like we already knew."
Love the use of classic music in your videos.
Pretty cool fix.You are not out of it yet,you did very well on the tin can alley, best of luck.
😂😂😂 worth the loss and time spent for that ending!
What if in the middle of unstitching him he said “that tickles, Vince.” Then his head turns around and looks at you....
Amazing job with the voicebox (Interestingly enough, it works on many of the same principals as a gramophone). Since this appears to have been a learning experience (Aren't they all?), I thought I'd share a little, very interesting tip I've seen on another channel (Marty's Matchbox Makeovers) - Using superglue combined with baking soda creates a substance with a stronger bond that can be shaped, and sanded... Could be helpful in repairing broken plastic bits...
You were brave to take this one on. Nice job on the stitching, I think it looks good. I suspect the record is just too damaged for a full repair, but hey you got it working a little bit. Nice job.
The moral of this story is...If you have some completely broken crap sell it on E-bay when Vince is going to make a new video.😜
*stuff*
True
i am so impressed with you, you have the patients of a saint!!!! bless you.
I hope the saint has patience or he might be really upset with Vince! ;)
Being an American, the only time I heard Andy Pandy referenced was in a Tom Baker Doctor Who episode (Hand of Fear) when his companion wore a striped outfit.
hahaha that was a brilliant ending. I'm gutted it didn't go well though. He cleaned up really nice
Very big fan of your channel, great videos Vince!
The ending had me in tears, WHAT YOU GOT TO SAY "have you seen Loopy"
This reminds me of the woody repair scene in Toy Story 2
Your content is quality as always 😉 Here's a tip: If you stumble upon more vinyl discs in the future that plays a recorded voice for dolls or vinyl discs that plays an album but the vinyls are filthy and dirty and the sound sounds a bit rubbish then i reccomend using wooden glue on them and spread a thin layer out on the whole disc and leave for 24 hours. The glue will form the shape of the disc which means that it will capture all the dirt from the grooves. In most cases the glue will come off looking like a vinyl disc and your disc will be very very clean ☺
Thank you and nice tip, thanks for sharing it :-)
When items you are repairing are glued together, try heating them up a tad to loosen the adhesive. It should come apart easier that way, try not to melt any plastic parts with the heat gun.
This comment should be pinned
Well he does look a lot better and the stitching and sewing was not too bad looking as well
Over all it was a great job
Haha, the ending was too funny. It's a shame but nice job getting it working anyway
Haunted doll watch! He’ll steal your soul!
And I 100% feel the same about super glue... never works as intended.
I can usually get it to work but it cracks and breaks and i give up or start throwing things
You have a lot of patience for doing this work - I commend you for that - no way I could do that
thats scary doll thingy .... stuff of nightmares ..... love that you didn't give up easily though.
Wtf Vince ! LMAO 😂🤣 LOVE UR VIDS BRO
That ending m8 😂😂🤣🤣🤦♂️ class! Really interesting to see how that worked and how it went together, loving the bit about ur wife telling you that's the wrong washing powder haha typical man thing 😅.
Also with super glue it's always a good shout to finely/gently sand both areas for glue contact, through all my fixings with glue it works most of the time.
I am now going to have nightmares of that creepy doll voice asking if I have seen Lupie
So funny a toy that had a couple of drinks 😆good one 👍
The end was really funny i hope you can work in more skit things like that.
when i was younger, i remember the barnyard speaking toys using a pull cord, then they transitioned to a plastic arm you press down after the mid-late 90s. still, old toys like this remind me of the talking Ninja Turtles line that was available for a short time. i only had one of them, but the basic design was their shells were replaced with a small vinyl record playing apparatus, and you ran a vinyl cord with a different word recorded onto it to produce sound
Cute. Ending is absolutely brilliant!
This has mentioned before, but you get a better bond with superglue with scuffing up the plastic. Additionally, you can get plastic glue made for model kits that actually melts and fuses the plastic pieces together and makes a stronger bond. Table top game terrain and miniature painting hobbyists would give a whole slew of tips and tricks that would carry over to some of you other fixes and rebuilds. Warhammer kitbashing videos for example... thanks for all the fun! :D
Hey Vince when you do that kind of restoration jobs you should take a before and after picture, you always do an amazing job!!
I can’t believe you didn’t go loopy lol
Love expoxy myself seems very strong. Wonder if there's any replacement records great vid Vince
Cleaning records with a piece of wood. I lol'd and cried at the same time
He then switched to some tweezers so that was fine XD
I bet Vince uses steel wool to wash his car.
When Vince opens up the box I went: "What!?!? It's not Roast Potatoes?"
All done - and perfectly ready for a horror movie ;-)
ayyye my mate vince back again with the quality content
Use a little bit of nail polish remover and it will whiten the super glue
@@richardhudson3014 I think you replied to the wrong comment lol
as a kid in the '60s or 70's I had Dr Dolittle Doll based on Rex Harrison with the same broken mechanism ... completely forgot about it until you unboxed Andy
LOL!! loved the ending, I had a blast watching this fix/struggle. A sad loss on this toy but still a nice fix imo. Keep your hopes up Vince.
Excellent. Thanks for the feedback. Take it easy :-)
I get the feeling "have you seen loopy?" might haunt my nightmares.
Those darn toy drunks! 😂
No wonder he was so dirty!
He was falling all over the place!
channel called toypolloi do this often, similar mechanism used in talking action man, and allows altering speed, etc. doesnt this have similarities to tronics ' big bird ?
Classic-all that effort and he sold for a paltry £5.50 😆
Nice video ! It's amazing that doll's back than had a vinly plate. Hope the Next video Will be soon online 👌
That is freaky(chuckies cousin)Great vid and good idear for the repair challenge
Great video 👍, ya probably if you had more time it would bring much more. Poor Andy out on his own. Kicked to the curb.
Great video man.. good job
cleaning grooves on a record.. coat it in PVA glue.. and peel off.
A valiant try m8, the doll would have had his token linen hat and poss a bunch of flowers or was it a watering can, such a long time since I saw the dolls as my little brother had one and I do remember the removable linen hat. Once upon a time most toyshops would have known someone who could have repaired the inner workings, abs craftsmen tackling what is a very difficult repair at the best of times so do take a pat on the back for going that extra mile :) Don't forget in the toy world old steam engines like Mamod and Wilesco, nor old model cars etc. I have myself branched out from collecting old Mamod's to restoring old Matchbox cars and trucks as it is quite satisfying turning a pile of doings into a factory fresh restored vehicle that will stay like that for ever more. Tonka is another good collectable brand that can see them turned from 4 wheeled disaster zones into as good as left the factory, Martin Butler's Retrorestore channel featured a Tonka dumper truck last year.
Thanks mate :-) Now a steam powered toy would have been a great item for this challenge. Unfortunately I have all the items needed in this series but I would be tempted to attempt a steam powered item for a normal 'trying to fix' video. That has never crossed my mind but I would love to try one. Thanks for the idea :-)
@@Mymatevince that would be cool to see something like that fixed in a new video
@@nathanmead140 I agree Nathan :-)
That ending is comedy gold. Good video there, Vince. :)
I used to wonder what Andy Pandy and Looby Lou got up to in that big basket after Watch with Mother was over LOL He usually wore a frilly costume and a big frilly bonnet,He never spoke as he was a string puppet, and the narrator did all the talking. His accomplices were Looby Lou,a rag doll and then Teddy, who was a......well a Teddy Bear. All 3 were string puppets. It was early 60s and part of a daily show aimed at young kids, called 'Watch with Mother' and had a different puppet show each day.Others were 'The Woodentops',Bill and Ben(The Flowerpot Men),Rag,Tag and Bobtail, and 'Picture Book'.ah yes I remember it well.
Weldon vinca it takes me back to when i was 3 years old grate video as usual
Thanks mate :-)
Lol the ending was so funny 🤣 😂
