    $150,000 FAIR LANES OPEN
    Fair Lanes Woodlawn, Baltimore, Md., Feb 26-Mar 3, 1990
    Wiseman Hometown Hero In Baltimore
    Danny Wiseman thrilled his ardent local supporters who had turned out en masse to witness his first PBA victory In the $150,000 Fair Lanes Open at Fair Lanes Woodlawn. Baltimore's Wiseman topped Don Moser, San Jose, Calif., 255-201, to earn the $28,000 top prize and an invitation to the Firestone Tournament of Champions.
    Wiseman, a four-year pro competing in his first full-time year on the Tour, began his first championship round appearance with six consecutive strikes. He led by 54 pins after six frames before sparing, and a late triple by Moser merely closed the gap while Wiseman cruised home.
    The ABC Sports-televised finals began with 13-time PBA champion Pete Weber topping Tony Westlake, Edmond, Okla., 209-182, and then he ousted Robert Lawrence, Austin, Texas, 247-211. Lawrence was seeking his place in the PBA record books in becoming the only player to win his first two titles back-to-back.
    Weber, Florissant, Mo., appeared unstoppable, but Moser was equal to his challenge and emerged in the semifinal, 255-234. Moser picked up $14,500 as runner-up and hoped his habit of improving one position annually continues in Fair Lanes Opens.

    I remember when the Fair Lanes Open would alternate each year between Baltimore and Washington, DC suburbs. The Baltimore sites were: Woodlawn, Kings Point, and Towson. The DC sites were: Capital Plaza and University. AMF bought Fair Lanes out nearly twenty years ago. Only Woodlawn, Towson, and Capital Plaza are still left.

      i used to work at AMF Capital Plaza Lanes from 2000-01 & the lanes were still wood at that time...University closed down in 2001 & they moved a few of their employees to Capital Plaza Lanes after that.

    Great bowling. One of the few times that the wife is more nervous than her bowler husband. Thanks for posting this tournament.

    You don't have to watch the whole thing to have a look back at what bowling was like in TV history.

    The music in that intro is my 2nd favorite of all the themes used for the Pro Bowlers Tour. I'm guessing Edd Kalehoff composed that theme. My 1st is the 1981-88 theme, which I'm guessing is Score Productions. I wish I could download both of these themes in the clear.

    He lost his first game here, but Tony Westlake from about 88-91 was just as solid a professional bowler as they come. Would have been very interesting if urethane remained the predominant technology for balls what kind of career Westlake would have had. Not saying he didn't have a really good career, but I can't help but think resin kind of hurt him like a lot of really great pros from that era ( Del Ballard being exhibit 1 I would argue).

    Can someone explain to me why the prize money in this tournament (Not Even a Major, and 23 years ago) is substantially higher than current PBA events?

      Bowling was much more popular, they had better sponsors, it was on ABC.

    • @RayJacksonbighmw
      @RayJacksonbighmw Před 9 lety +7

      ***** ...yeah but also, incompetent leadership by the PBA hierarchy nowadays, putting the shows on ESPN on Sundays opposite of the NFL, NBA, and NASCAR every week, and the shows are not even LIVE anymore, they are taped sometimes weeks in advance, anyone can go online and find out who won before the show even goes to air.
      It's a shame, because the players on the PBA Tour are much better now and in better physical shape, and they even have their own custom jerseys they wear during tournament proper and you can definitely tell who's who, such great talent now like Jason Belmonte, Sean Rash, Bill O'Neill, and others need to get recognized and we need more legitimate, long-term non-bowling-related (like Quaker State and True Value were during the days on ABC) sponsors for the tour, but the ONLY way we can get them is to take the Tour off of this bullshit cable-only situation they got themselves into and get it back on free TV (the networks) where it once graced the airwaves with big ratings numbers.

      Ray Jackson agreed, with Fox taking over the programming and PBA ownership changing to Bowlero there finally is hope. Fox has already committed two million additional dollars to the prize fund which hopefully will bring up the average earnings of a professional bowler from $25,000
