The Ziggy years are his best years. Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs are my three favorite albums from Bowie.

The first time I heard David Bowie's "Suffragette City" I was 17 driving my car on The Garden State Parkway. I was so astounded by what I was hearing I pulled over to the side of the road to really listen.

Nice shout out to Mick Ronson, one of my heroes who inspired me when I was learning - what a fantastic guitarist and what a killer tone. A huge talent who went too soon.
Now that you've heard these Bowie album classics, check them out Live in the Ziggy Stardust Movie. It's amazing footage, and astounding to see Bowie in character as Ziggy. Bowie really looks like an Alien, imitating a Human! And Mick Ronson is equally other-worldly. Best Live "Moonage Daydream", "Ziggy Stardust", and the concert final "Rock'n'Roll Suicide". For the final song, the movie captures the moment when Bowie announces to the audience that he is retiring the Ziggy character forever. This was news to his band, (at the peak of Ziggy's popularity) the Spiders might have toured with Bowie for years.
i want to see "moonage daydream" from the same show we watched "Five Years" from! but then i'm totally down to check whatever else out! that movie sounds awesome. i'm not well equipped for movie reactions (I cant imagine how big those fuckers are) in the hardware department but i will for sure check it out on my own time.

Yes, vivid imagery. The cover photo starts it and the music takes you places in a weird futuristic world. This is one of the best albums ever made.

The MAIN difference between my generation from 50 years ago and today's generation is that we weren't pausing the album every 10 seconds to consult our phones for lyrics & context.....us old folks experienced the SONIC POWER displayed all on it's own, in Real Time. We take plenty of scorn nowadays, and I can only suspect "jealousy" as the reason.....but you kids will NEVER KNOW how incredible it was at the time. We ARE happy that y'all are discovering the magnificence of OUR youth....but us old folks DO KNOW what's-what.....and that's enough for us. Does THIS response make you scornfully laugh, junior?!? 😆
I always get an outer body feeling when I hear Ziggy Stardust...Bowie is immaculate.
Those are my two favorite cuts as well, Lee. What a genius, the greatest songs, one in the middle of each side, Bowie and Mick Ronson leading the Spiders from Mars. Hunky Dory before it, Aladdin Sane follows it - what a rock trilogy.

@@L33Reacts Check out Mick's solo albums - "Slaughter on 10th Avenue", "Play Don't Worry", "Just Like This", and "Heaven and Hull". (Tracks such as "Angel No 9", "I'd Give Anything to See You" stand out for me. "Hard Life" contains a short homage to the Ziggy riff.)

When I chose Hull University to take my degree, it was a sweetener that Mick Ronson came from that city. Ah, the guy is missed.
I worked Bowie's Sight and Sound Tour at Giants Stadium when Bowie did his very last performance of the song "Ziggy Stardust". It was both a great moment for me , but also Very Sad , because it was the end of an era. I had met Bowie that morning, working an MTV promo of the "I want my MTV" commercials...a very special day....
A dear friend of mine was lucky enough to see Bowie on this tour. I didn't. I'll regret that one till I die.
Important note. A major part of this album is Mick Ronson. Not only a great guitarist but the arrangements are mostly his.
And to think that the people that were around to listen to this then are now Grandparents. Some even Great Grandparents. How bizarre.
A great trio of songs to end the album. Very radio friendly but more importantly, out of bounds musicianship. Bowie was definitely one of a kind. He had no fear. Thanks Lee.
Yeah, it's pronounced suffra-jet, but it is really hard to know that looking at the spelling. You can hear that in how he pronounces it in the chorus.

An English commenter once chimed in about where Suffragette City is - it's the nickname of Manchester, England. Maybe there were a lot of women marching for their right to vote ( called the "suffragettes").
Yes, Emmaline Pankhurst was born in Manchester. She was one of the pioneers of the Women’s Suffrage movement which led to women granted the right to vote.
The live version of Rock n Roll Suicide is truly epic.

When I was a teen learning guitar, the Ziggy Stardust riff was a favorite, playing a "G" chord, hand smack, and D chord with a pinky hammer. Drove my dad mad, Lol.
Summer o' 1974 I was workin' at Tower Records in Sacramento. A co-worker asked me what I thought o' David Bowie 'n as I'd heard o' him but was unfamiliar with his music I gave a lackluster response. He said to me "Oh yeah? Listen to this!" He put Suffragette City on the sound system 'n blasted it. I was awestruck 'n o'erwhelmed. 'Twas a moment that up 'n changed my life jes then. Yes I've been a huge Bowie fan ever since. Got me?

This was during Bowie's era of his "alter-ego, "Ziggy Stardust." He played this character in a Broadway Play, and also brought the alter-ego to life in his live concert performances. At times I thought Bowie was losing his mind, and couldn't differentiate between David Bowie, and Ziggy. This was in the early 70s.

This was the first Bowie album I bought and it blew me away, and made him a superstar. Out of curiosity I then got hold of his previous album Hunky Dory, which didn’t sell that well, and it grew and grew on me. All these years later, through all his changes, all the Berlin stuff Et al…Hunky Dory is now my absolute favourite.
My friend Candy was in a film with David and she told me at one time that she knew he was a well-known singer and musician and said if she had listened to his music before she'd met him she probably would have fainted when he walked into the room. Instead she said he was just a very focused professional and they'd read lines together whenever the cameras weren't rolling because he wanted to be totally prepared when they did start rolling.

L33, I have been listening to this album since the first day of it's release and play it constantly cause it's a masterpiece and one of my top 3 desert island albums Absolutely amazing album.
Suffragette City is my favorite Bowie song..but then then again so is Ziggy Stardust.
Bowie as Ziggy Stardust looked just like my aunt back in '73-74. Despite that image, I think it's the best of Bowie. Ziggy Stardust is my favorite.
Thank you for doing the whole album. The Spiders are the best band Bowie ever had, creative and energetic as Hell. I’ll listen to anything Mick Ronson plays on, and I’m so glad I got to see him play and even hang out afterwards.
Whenever I'd put together a mix tape (on reel-to-reel, of course) for a house party in the 80's I'd place 3 songs in a row guaranteed to get the guests dancing:
- "White Wedding," Billy Idol.
- "What I Like About You," The Romantics.
and, of course, Suffragette City.

Great job as usual, Lee. Just thought you might like to know, a suffragette was a woman seeking the right to vote through organized protest. The ONLY reason that I knew that was, I kid you not, back when I was a youngster, Mary Poppins was the movie to see (it is a great film, after all, who does not love Mary Poppins - Practically perfect in every way, you know) the mom of the kids was a suffragette, which was printed on a banner (think Miss America) around her whilst she was going out protesting the right for women to vote.
My grandmother marched for the right to vote. It wasn’t that long ago 😊
Lee if you get a chance, watch the documentary, Five Years, about his rapid ascendancy & massively talented creativity.
Lee, I am not certain you fully understand, but when that last track hit "Rock N Roll Suicide" in 1972, it really hit for a lot of outsiders or Queers that Bowie was really speaking to them. It still gets me.
Also, the track "Ziggy Stardust" was released as a single that year as well, and became a staple of Bowie's live ser for years.

I'd recommend the album, Young Americans. It's his R&B/Soul album and it's amazing as well. He has sax legend David Sanborn on it and vocal arrangements and vocals by Luther Vandross. And every song is amazing!!!

All the songs are incredible on this album, but i always find rock N Roll suicide is phenomenonal.Just a side note: Currently, in my hometown, the original hand-written lyrics of star man by Bowie himself from 1972 are on display at a art museum who purchased them when they went up to auction few years back.Starting price was 60 thousand Australian dollors. Ended up.paying almost half a mill.

Fabulous album. Mick Ronson was an unmatched weapon in Bowie's arsenal at the time. A perfect foil, arranger and accompanist. Loved Mick's collabs with Ian Hunter too. And you should check out some of the work he did with Toronto's Dalbello(Lisa). First see her early 'Pretty Girls', proceed from there. A friend used to love watching suits from ad agencies who typically thought themselves evuh so clevuh shutup and drop their jaws when she opened her mouth.

Of all Bowie tracks I think Wild is the Wind is my all time favourite. I was living in Beckenham, Kent, where Bowie was born and grew up, when he played the at the bandstand in the park bot long before he passed. Better times. 💙

I had bought the 45 to Changes when it came out. I was around seven at the time. An older brother bought the Ziggy album and I played it more than him.

Suffragette has to do with women voting. In that song he’s basically telling a guy yes we’ve been together but I’ve met this girl and right now I’m into her.
