  • Niger is a principal transit country for migrants. Now, the journey has become harder. That has less to do with the recent military putsch and more with laws enacted some years ago. A report completed before the military coup.
In the desert of northern Niger, thousands of people are struggling to survive. They’ve been deported from Algeria, some even tortured there. Now, they’re trying to make their way to the larger oasis town of Agadez, which has been turned into a bottleneck on the road to Europe. The situation here has been steadily deteriorating since 2015. The European Union worked out a deal with Niger’s government that included generous aid funding. In return, migrants were to be prevented from heading north from Agadez. Since then, deportations have been on the increase, while de facto criminalizing the migration itself has only exacerbated security problems for the entire region. Michele Cattani met and talked with migrants on their way through the desert and witnessed the situation in Agadez. A Report by Michele Cattani

I agree they should not come to Europe. But also man, it is impoossible to make their country better. Niger will be poor in 1000 years as well. It is not possible to have development there. There is not rainwater, no groundwater, you cant find water to drink, you cant take a shower at least once a year. No electricity, no port, no roads, no airport, nothing. The only way out for countries like Niger would be to be colonized again. Not by a single country and not to exploit it. But colonized by a group of countries, including China and Russia which would help it build some basic infrastructure and some basic services and appoint governors to get rid of the corruption.

@@EndritVj Niger got colonized in 1922, very late and had independence by 1960. 40 years of colonization is nothing. There are countries in Europe that were colonies for a very long time and now are pretty developed. Same in East Asia. The French colonised them because having a colony was a status symbol and they were in a rivalry with the UK. The resources Niger has are insignificant. They have some uranium, but uranium is not rare, not at all. only 15% of the French uranium comes from Niger.

These men are either single or they believe they'll be able to bring their wife once they are settled/get their papers in Europe. They also carry the hope of their whole family. They have a lot of pressure on their shoulders. They are expected to find work and send money monthly. They usually have large families and everyone is poor. Their brothers and sisters can't find jobs. This pressure is also the reason why some of them won't go back home even if they want to. They don't want to lose face and feel the humiliation of failure.

Niger has a birth rate of almost 7 children per woman. This explosion is in no way manageable, by no system, by no government, by no nation. Think just about the problem of educating the children. If you want to have a class size of 28 children, that would mean that 25% of the adults would have to work as teachers. While in Europe with 1,5 children they need only 4% of the adults to work as teachers. The result? The average school education an all overall level of knowledge is miserable. Africa creates Generation after Generation millions and millions of useless youth. This is also the reason why 50% of all African immigrants have no job in Europe, even after 10 years. The economy today so highly complicated and technically developed as it was never before. There is simply no use for uneducated people, nowhere on this planet. Unskilled labor is done by machines and robots.
Africa must solve this problem alone, nobody can, will or should solve it for them.

Africa’s population will double in a few decades and when they migrate to Europe or the Americas, Canada and other rich countries there will be no jobs for them. When the wealth gap reaches 1% for the wealthy and over 60% for the poor who live in misery, through out history societies will collapse and even our great country America is no exception to this. Societies will look for a strong man or authoritarian governments to take the reigns.
