Why You Should Play TMNT: Shredder's Revenge!

  • The newly released Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge promised to bring back the old arcade style of TMNT action from the 1980s and 1990s. Something I, a 2000s TMNT fan, was definitely down for. It looked very promising from day one in terms of animation, sound and gameplay, but how good was the game now that I have played it? Well, I thought it was awesome! This video shall explain why!

To be completely honest, I share J's opinion: Even though Leo has always been my favorite turtle, I find April O'Neil to be the most fun to play because of her moveset, and it doesn't hurt that some of her moves are based on Street Fighter characters such as Chun Li and Karin.

I thought the option to taunt and refill the super gage made things rather easy but then most of the old arcade brawlers focused on fun over challenge, and there are multiple difficulties if someone really wants a tough fight. I was impressed they got the much lesser-known Groundchuck and Dirtbag back for a dual boss battle, even giving cameos to Tokka and Rahzar.

This is the greatest TMNT game in years. Usually licensed games are often games made with no love or care and only for greed. Even if it does have love and care, a company will screw over by forcing them to rush leaving out polish. This game is not one of those that suffered neither fate. This game is up in the leagues with the Arcade Game and Turtles In Time along with Simpsons Hit and Run and SpongeBob: Battle for Bikini Bottom.

Well, thanks for watching all these years. I figured I'd respond to this since three people are in this thread hoping for the same thing. It's kind of weird to balance the fact that I have so many viewers across a plethora of different brands and genres. I mean that as in, I made the DCAU retrospective a long time ago, and ever since it finished, I have put almost no thought into what and when the next DC Cartoon retrospective is, because the DCAU was something I wanted to do in 2017 - 2019, but is something I basically moved on from immediately afterwards. I'd like to do Teen Titans, The Batman, Brave and the Bold etc...at some point, but there are no concrete plans for them to happen anytime soon. As the creator of the videos, I am just doing what I want to see. So I completely forget that there even are people hoping each new video is Teen Titans or things like that. The only visual flourish I miss in Turtles is more crowds in the city. The foot soldiers are animated awesomely, but you don't see any people in the city draw their curtains or hide behind their cars or anything besides the intro of the game where a group of channel 6 employees flees the building. People on this game worked on Scott Pilgrim I think, and I thought it was cool how that game had a lot of people hanging in the background of the stages. It makes sense that peeople are gonna flee from the foot soldiers, but I don't think New York should feel deserted either. When there's cop cars parked around it would be fun if those cops were cowering in fear as you combo.

My friend and I tackled the game together and it was wonderful experience that jolted the 80's/90's TMNT nostalgia as we were two older gents who grew up during the hayday of the 87 cartoon and the original toyline J. This game is a sweet, must have for TMNT fans, not just as a sweet homage to the old beat em' ups, but in that it's a solidly well made game. In an era where you never know if the game you purchases is going to be a complete, well polished game or a complete train wreck that stole your wallet, and wasted your time; further gives the game credability in my eyes.
It's fun to play, plenty of replay value and the essence of the classic TMNT are on full display. So yeah this is a must have for fans of beat em' ups and especially the TMNT brand.

This is honestly like the Sonic Mania to classic TMNT. Tee Lopes even composed the soundtrack for both games. In the 2010s (and even back in the 2000s) I always found both TMNT and Sonic to have very similar concepts. By the later half of the last decade I thought both the turtles and the blue hedgehog had similar problems like identity crisis, but for TMNT I think it was warranted since 2012 was a Renaissance era (no pun) for the 1987 series.
Sonic on the other hand was struggling to move forward probably because sonic generations was meant to be a one time only ordeal. I know that there's something else I'm missing, but anyone can feel free to add on to this comparison as I'm sure there's a lot more to compare too.
Meanwhile, I think it's about time we get a video game return to an old anime franchise that has been long forgotten since the late 2000s. Maybe Chaotic, Dinosaur King, or maybe even Digimon!

6:09 - You know, I'm not sure I necessarily mind it being easier in multiplayer. That was kind of the experience back in the day. Granted, the difficulty used to be set to "Quarter Goblin" so high difficulty is definitely fair. But there's something special about trying to play a game that's too tough and then asking your friend to help you and taking it on together. If the game scales up enemies then it stops feeling like sharing the load and more like a punishment for having friends.
On the subject of the combat I do really love how they were able to elevate the beat-em up combat without making the combat too complex. These old beat'em up games only had two buttons. (Standard JAMMA only allowed for 3 buttons per player. Probably why Genesis had 3 buttons.) SImple things like adding the hold a button for a strong attack and a button for an roll really do make the combat much more interesting without making it more complex. I feel like I'm playing a old school beat'em but at the same time I never feel like "I just need more quarters" which is how many old beat'em up games often felt. When I get hurt I always feel like it's because I didn't use my toolkit effectively. A toolkit I always have full access too because I don't have to memorize long input chains or complex inputs. Simple inputs using a few buttons with lots of options to deal with varied enemy types. Easy to learn, difficult to master.
Oh yeah and the special gauge instead of HP and hitting jump and attack at the same time to do an upward attack were also great. That and putting in the double jump which made it easier to differentiate the inputs between the jump kick and the slow float while swinging a weapon attack. Just fantastic.

So I'm attempting to beat Arcade on Gnarly solo (since I've done with in multiplayer now), and so far, I have been unable to make it past Episode 13 without losing all of my continues. The fact that I haven't beaten it yet since getting it day 1 really increases my love for it. :) Glad you enjoyed it, can't wait for you to check out the 2012 series, cause I think you're really gonna dig it. 2003 is still my favorite, but it's a close matchup between the two.

Only thing I'm a little bummed out about is how they swapped their moves. Leonardo used to have that spinning cyclone which was given to raph. Raph uses too much swings with weapons that are meant for stabbing. And he doesn't have his signature torpedo move.
And they featured a rising attack. Why couldn't mikey have used a rising tackle for that? It was his signature move. Also leo's rolling slash from his double jump was donnie's move.

I dunno what they've got planned for the future, but if they're digging up more old cartoons to make cool games from I hope some of them watched some DCAU cartoons growing up. I was a little too young but I watched Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Batman TAS, Superman TAS, Batman Beyond and all that after the fact, and they've held up really well. Some of the coolest incarnations of those DC characters. Would be cool if they had a good game to their name, the old DC superhero games I've played weren't all that.

Look I like the TMNT. My TMNT show has always been the 2003 one. It was awesome. Your series on it... INCREDIBLE. But I never got the hype to go back and watch the original (more than a few episodes I've caught as a younger kid on TV). I've seen some of the movies, never cared for the newer series but I consider myself a... semi-fan. I grew up on the arcade game. Me and my best friend back then we used to play it all the time. The lady that ran the trailer that served as an arcade knew her as if she was our aunt. Who knows how much hard earned cash we have spent there to our parents dismay. But still I sya that I like TMNT but am not obssesed with their media.
With all that established I have to say that I LOVE this game. I freaking love it. It's the best game ever!(yep that's a hyperbole but whatever I'm riding the high dudeee) So much fun, so full with easter eggs (and who knows how many of them I don't even get so...woah) and it's just nostalgia done right. When I started it I just couldn't wait to get back from work the next day so I can play again. Even my girlfriend enjoys the game and she's very gamer challenged...she knows the turtles from her childhood too so that helps to get her involved but she's seriously having fun while sucking at the game. xD This game is AWESOME! I want more of it!
