- It was the longest coaster in Europe with over 1.5 miles of relentless 50 mph terrain-coaster goodness! The Ultimate operated from 1991-2020 and was part-built by British Rail. The Ultimate featured two lift hills and two tunnels.
The coaster was well known for it's brutal yet pleasurable ride experience - riders bound all over the place!
Even though the camera was mounted, the video captures the rough charm and character that made The Ultimate a unique experience. Much better than a smooth video...where's the fun in that?
Lightwater Valley is located near Ripon in Yorkshire, England.
This is the exact same video as the Ultimate 3D video we posted for those that cannot view the 3D version on their phone or tablet. Here is the link to the 3D video we posted: • The Ultimate 3D front ...

“Hey let’s make a new ride”
“sounds good, what’s the signature element?”
“A lift hill”
“sounds alright to me”
Glad I wasn't the only one thinking there were too many chain lifts. It must have had a tendency to get stuck and that's why they put them there... I doubt it was designed with that many. I could see a strong gust of wind stopping the train on the flat sections.
@@NAB622 it does get stuck. I've been on it going up the 2nd hill when it stopped 😂 thats why all the signs are there now.and that fence is new lol

This coaster looks like a backyard roller coaster in some parts
I know what u mean.
CaptainWhirlwind yeah, chains to move it along.
the one and only rusty shakleford arent there chains on every roller coaster?
The ultimate backyard coaster.
Bloody feels like it too.. Expect broken ribs on this lol
As a kid walking through forests on sunday family walks I always imagined how cool it would be to have a rollercoaster hugging the terrain of the forest floor and zipping past trees on ground level. This looks basically like my dream ride! :D

I know what you mean. I love this one. Makes me wanna build something on the backyard :D
Funny story. Years ago we were at Lightwater Vally queing to ride the Ultimate. This woman come up to me and said,"I am too scared to ride it, will you look after my son on this ride" I said sure. We ended up on the front seat. As we racketed up the first lift I said "Plant your feet on the front of the car, put your arms up!" Then the drop happened. That little man rode that coaster with his arms in the air the whole ride. He smiled all the way round. When we got off his Mother screamed at me "You said you would look after him!" I just asked "Is he still alive?"
Tiddybeth why was the mother angry?
From the open park you can't see the rest of the ride after the first drop, and from the front seat, you're over the hill before the speed increases. The mother wouldn't have even seen the kid on the ride at all - regardless of if he was holding on or not.
Why was she even upset the guy probably came off smiling still and the mother acted like a five year old who can’t get candy. I’ll be thinking negative things about that mom for the rest of my life
Good on you serves her right for asking a complete stranger to take care of her child as if a random stranger is gonna be concerned for a boy's welfare barely known to the stranger hope she learnt a lesson there either go with your son or don't let him ride on his own i'm sure she won't do that again
@@paradoxxed8888 She saw the photo with his arms in the air. .
Wow, a true terrain coaster if ever there was one. If they could just speed up that middle section, that was painfully slow.
It doesn't even feel long when you're on the coaster, probably because the climb is so intense and then after the second drop its just insane how fast you go through the forest
+Elijah Rosenberg They're such different coasters that IMO it's apples and oranges. Love 'em both mind.
I've unfortunately never ridden The Ult in the dark but BD in the autumnal pitch-black - after a good few jars - was something truly memorable.
A slight decline after the second hill lift would have been a better design. I don’t go on coasters to have repetitive hill lifts
Matt Man lol tru😂
The Beast?
The ride is 6 minutes long because half of it is lift hill :P
The Yellow Entity so true
Weak
And it’s also the second longest coaster in the world
I mean, a three minute ride is still really good. Most coasters have a runtime of less than a minute
Even though it’s the second longest coaster in the world. This comment makes no sense
The very fact that this coaster ride lasts more than 30 seconds makes it amazing. Old slow and rickety...perfect roller coaster.
Gp
Absolutely criminal that they closed this, what an experience it was.
I agree! Loved this ride dearly.

This actually looks really really fun. Love how it travels along side the country paths
This was actually a pretty smooth ride when it first got built, rode it many times back in the day. It certainly is showing signs of age now.
Fr I rode it in 02-03 ish and again in 2012. Loads has been changed since i went on. Its a lot safer at least 😂 and that plastic has gone that bruises you knees from the old bars. They have overhead harness now
Kev Sammie Spensley yeah, I rode it with my friend like 5 times in a go due to fast pass, but it was very different then. It was a while ago, like a good few years . It was hard to not hurt your hips when turning as you kept going into the sides and into each other
@@jxsmin.thompson they'll always keep improving it as standards improve. Along as they have the cash
@@princess89pinky95 there isn’t an overhead harness. It’s just a lap bar
For the people saying it looks boring / slow etc. The experience you have watching a video of it and the experience you have riding it are two completely different things. The airtime is fantastic on this roller coaster, and it’s a real laugh. I remember riding this with my parents and laughing the whole way round because of how janky it was. Trust me, fun ride.
It's just that Americans are used to their coasters blasting off at insane speeds out the gate and looping like crazy. So they see this and don't understand the different elements to it that makes it fun.
@@EternaIWait Not always. Look at The Beast at Kings Island (the longest coaster in the US). Very similar to this, but personally The Beast looks better.
@@EternaIWaitmost American coasters are based more on airtime than loops and most British coasters are based on loops
Wow love how open and free you feel on this ride.
R.I.P The Ultimate since it's been dismantled (Destroyed other words) Was my first ever roller coaster I ever rode during a school trip.
Haha. Looking through comments and seeing people saying it’s boring... Well thanks for letting us know you’ve watched half the video and not actually ridden it either. There are no special prizes for anyone trying to look cool here. This ride is wild and not smooth, and certainly not boring.
Not seen a coaster like this before, going through the woods near ground level. Great ride.
The Beast at Kings Island is similar, albeit wooden track and with a double helix finale. Similar length too.
Built by BR. That's why it has ballast and sleepers like a railway.

no its not painful well don't sit to the side too much then your fine!!!!!!
i know but it isn't that bad, I mean you don't die

I like the slow lifts, builds tension. That second section is something else, I thought it was going going to be a nice gentle ride like the previous section, a bit of sight seeing.
World's Best Backyard Roller coaster!
Coaster Master certainly feels like one!
Ahhh millennium force , so badass
The ride looks rough as hell and the lift hills take forever, but zipping through the forest up and down hills that follow the terrain seems like it would be exhilarating. The scenery at the top of the 2nd lift hill is really nice too
A classic ride from my childhood! The section after the second drop was always super fun!
RIP The Ultimate 1991-2023. Gone but the memories it gave it's riders will never be forgotten. Thank you for making my school trip to Lightwater Valley back in the day "An Ultimate Adventure"
The Ultimate was definitely a unique coaster that created many memories that will be spoken about for years to come and it of course made British history .Then in 2023, The Ultimate was sadly destroyed by Brighton Pier Group who have no clue how to run a Theme Park 🙄
right i’m so sad i wish they never removed this rollercoaster from their park because i wanna go to it so bad😭😭 they started demolition this year so good bye bye foreverr☹️💔
I wanted to ride it after Covid, on a trip up north, and was planning to this year, but no longer possible. :(
It's a shame that so many places want to cater for young families and not families

Took my daughter yesterday for the first time in a couple of years. I've always LOVED this coaster. A lot of people, enthusiasts even, find it too wild but, for me, it does what a coaster should do - it packs a punch. A real, out of control feeling. Ascending the lift hills is another matter altogether, mind...

Looks like a great ride. I've often wondered why more coasters aren't built through wooded areas or even places with buildings and lots of verticals close to the tracks so you experience the speed and movement more. So many amusement parks build them out in the open and I suppose that's to experience the feeling of flying. I liked this.
Check out the voyage or beast
Beautiful ride. I love the way it's low to the ground using the landscape. I love it.
Oh my days 🙌 brings back memories as a kid seeing this roller coaster......I been on it a few times 👌☺
I'd love to ride this! I love how the tracks are so close to the ground. That's gotta enhance the feeling of speed, being that close to the ground and whipping through the trees.
Used to go here every year with my mum when I was a kid. It was magical.
Love the natural scenery. Maybe not the most thrilling ride, but something more relaxing in this upside-down world.
“more relaxing”... I feel like you can’t have been anywhere near this ride. You hold on for dear life in that second part.
I love this roller coaster. I think its the best one i have ever seen. Its like riding a train crossed with a roller coaster ride. The scenery reminds you of going to your grandmas house in the country. Looks like a nice place for a walk or a picnic, also i just bet theres an awesome fishing hole just around the corner. I ❤ this roller coaster!

I will never have the opportunity to ride one of these incredible mountain coasters for real, so I am so happy for people like you who record and share their experience on You Tube so that people like me can experience the thrill of a mountain coaster without the danger or the expense. How do people rate this compared to other coasters like ones at Alton Towers.
I have a bit of a coaster fear yet I've actually been on this one and the drop looks steeper than ones like 13 at Alton lol
the fear disappears after the first drop on a coaster just go for it
It was tame compared to even Blackpool let alone Alton Towers rides but it was still great and loved it being the longest in the world then and is rode it it had beautiful veiws from the top which was high not just seemed it and the woods were lovely you went through as a kid I used to go to work with my Dad who was an engineer for Coke and I was once there with him the day before opening when he was servicing the machines and along with a hand full of the staffs family got to ride without queuing all day free as testing the rides! 😉 👍🏼

Apparently "The Storm" in Katie's World in RCT1 is based off this coaster. That's what brought me here. The more ya know!
The entire Park "Katie's World / "Katie's Dreamland" was based off of Lightwater Valley.
dillon martone I'm building this on rct moblie
Thankfully the real coaster is a lot safer, as RCT1 didn't know that block brakes were a thing. I'm pretty sure my RCT Classic playthrough of that level involved me literally destroying the coaster to stop the infamous Station Brakes Failure.
That's what I was thinking
@@shinydavidhowell You can add block brakes in Classic, though. Just move the entrance and exit, then split the station and switch to block sectioned mode.

I Agree Bro It Will Be Missed 😢
why didnt they put a fence round the track so that deer wont go on the track
There actually is a fence in quite a few parts - unfortunately deer can jump very high, therefore a fence probably wouldn't do an awful lot.
A deer has got into the track before and it got hit and decapitated
You would need at least a 6 foot high fence surrounding the entire ride, you old need to maintain it, and there’s still a good chance that they would find a way over it. Our local airport has a 7 foot fence and I’ve seen deer find a slightly elevated point to leap over it
@@awildfilingcabinet6239 if the deer can't see through it, they won't attempt to jump over it.
Storytime:-
Me and my friend went to Lightwater Valley and I managed to get her on this (I'm a thrill junkie, she isn't) she LOVED it and we went on it over and over again, on about the 7th-8th time, there were these 4 girls behind us and one of them was screaming bloody murder before the first drop, like "I'M GONNA DIE!" And "LORD HELP ME!" Me and my friend were trying not to laugh but then it got to the first drop and she began to scream "I WANT CHICKEN NUGGETS!" Me and my friend burst out laughing at this point but try to hide it with screaming, we couldn't help it, she sounded ridiculous and it was too funny.
