Nor is she hating on music in general, it's a metaphor, it's really about how we've become blind/numb to what's happening in the world right now. People aren't just listening to this song mindlessly, its message is actually being talked about a lot! What she's trying to say with the song was already pretty obvious, but she made it that much more obvious by addressing xenophobia, racism, sexism and many more of today's issues in the music video. It's sparked a lot of discussion on the internet already, the song is doing what it was supposed to do. Katy is a good songwriter and manages to write serious messages into seemingly mindless pop songs pretty often. She doesn't have to move away from pop to get her point across. The genre doesn't take away from the message. If anything, pop is the best genre to spread such an important message, since it stands for popular. Pop reaches the biggest audience.
