  • Lets see what happens when we put dry ice in our homemade air conditioner.
    disclaimer Dry ice is the solid form of co2 and while not poisonous does displace oxygen and can cause asphyxiation, so don’t try this inside!

    As dry ice melts, it undergoes sublimation, (direct conversion from a solid into gaseous CO2, bypassing the liquid state). Improper ventilation during use, transport, or storage of dry ice can lead to inhalation of large concentrations of CO2 with subsequent harmful effects, including death

    Definitely an indirect approach would be better. Or use dry ice along with regular ice and find a nice mixture of the two. I deliver groceries and have access to alot of dry ice and sometimes I'll throw peices of it in the air vents if I get a truck with no A/C and it actually does cool down the cabin a little bit. I want to make some kind of device that is portable and pretty small. Cool video sir

    I love the idea! maybe try reversing the blower? it shouldn't freeze up and hot air rises so you would be takeing the hotter air from the room. just my thoughts.

  • @PsyCodeqz
    @PsyCodeqz Před 3 lety +2

    it can work if you have a pure oxygen tank you can use while feeling the blissful cold air, of course you'd put the dry ice system outside of the room, pumping its nice cold air inside the room, with a o2 system connected to your lungs, problem solved. AC camping in the desert brought me here. How that cooler with ice and dry ice in a contained unit works in 100 degree desert weather for the 10 hours of sleep is something i'm still researching though.

    All the more reason for a drain. CO2 goes to the lowest point and would flow thru a tube probably 1/2" at least I.D. Probably need to be insulated to keep it from condensing moisture out of the air like the other pipe.

    I kind of like this idea, with hurricane season here, I often am without power for a week or more, and a big stash of this could cool a small structure like an ice fishing shanty. I'd be thinking more sitting the dry ice on top of a radiator vs a grate and pulling the air through that into the tent to keep most of the co2 out, or doing it with fluid/pumps--but I'm guessing that's the kind of upgrade you hint at right at the end.

    I would think Dry Ice would be perfect for personal cooling in outdoor or well ventilated areas using low powered fans that run on USB power. In theory the more powerful the fan, the faster the Dry Ice would dissapear. With a slow fan speed the air may not be totally frozen by the time it exits but still be cool by the time it hits your face. Plus you wouldn't be going through the Dry Ice nearly as fast. Hoping to test this myself.

    For example if you order steaks from like Omaha steaks or something like that they ship it to you packed in dry ice the dry ice is concealed and it doesn't poison your food what I'm thinking is can we wrap the dry ice up and plastic or something so the gas is can escape and it will cool the air inside the core and we can enjoy a good clean air or maybe allow the dry ice to be open and cool the air but vent the gases elsewhere allow them to dry ice to cool the entire chamber separating the gases but just collect the cool air that's what I'm trying to figure out

    Here's another idea maybe do a split chamber in the cooler put dry ice on the bottom venting gases elsewhere but keep the second level of the cooler watertight and put regular ice in it with the dry ice be cold enough to make the regular ice last if so then we could use the regular ice blowing air acrossed it and stay cool meaning like can dry ice provide enough coolness to make the environment inside a cooler cold enough to keep the ice on the upper level of the core cold enough and last longer I know there's a smart person out there who's taking my words and putting it into thoughts that's why I can't really message what I'm thinking thoughts are more perfect than how one can explain it

    Love you’re line of thinking. I’m up here in the middle of Michigan where we might get a week or two of un-godly hot weather. The house is about 900sq ft. with an oil furnace in the basement. Lately I’ve been shutting up the house, taking the access panel off the furnace and just letting the squirrel cage pull the cool air out of the basement. Kind of works. Still cooler than outside. What are your thoughts about placing a chunk of dry ice in front of the squirrel cage? Would there be any adverse effects to the motor, and how long would the dry ice last? Fun fact: The old touring bands from back in the day used to toss their power amps into a cooler with dry ice. Can’t have enough watts! Thanks for your due diligence.

    What a great video! Very informative. I’m searching for a way to cool down my pontoon enclosure (basically a tent), and definitely leaning on the ice chest/blower method. Watching the most popular video, I asked myself if dry ice was a option. This video shows me that would not be a good idea. I think the blower being placed on the outside will keep it from freezing, and using a large/single block of ice helps last much longer. I just don’t want to wake up feeling like I slept in a field and now have a dewy coat of water all over me HA! Otherwise , it was a cool video, and you’re picking up a new subscriber because of it. Yeah but if you use dry ice dry ice goes from a solid to a vapor so you don't get no condensation you don't get the water and the fan itself as it's blowing the air out it's going to blow the vapor out along with it so giving you a nice layer of fog on the ground but you would have to have a grade in there to put the dry ice on so it don't crack the cooler from being so cold we call him swamp coolers or a swamp AC I was born and raised in the swamps this thing is nothing new to me the one that we built we use the big old styrofoam cooler 184 quart cooler with about 30 lb of dry ice and a little bit of water you should have seen that thing that was cool as hell and it's not just an AC you can keep all your food your sodas beer and everything else cold

Another words can dry ice be cold enough to call the inside of a Corso that a fan can blow through collecting that cold air and cooling a room down but at the same time have the off-gassing of the dry ice either be contained or vented otherwise, just like icewood cool something down you just want the cold air

In a nutshell, would need a really large bag, definitely bigger than the cooler. Also through other testing i have found that heat exchangers dont work well, as soon ice the ice melts away from the wall the lidenfrost effect insulates to well.

      Well the thing is that the co2 would build up and saturate the trailer creating a very high asphyxiation risk. So you would be forced to ventilate the trailer for at least thirty minutes before its safe to enter and by that time all the cold air is blown out.
      Unfortunately the use of co2 for safe and cheap cooling is still out of reach.
      What could be a neat idea that i want to try is adapting to a 12volt ac system and tying that into vehicle power so that the trailer can be air conditioned while on the go without extra equipment.

      So i have worked out a few tries with dry ice. The problem is that anytime you bring dry ice into an enclosed space is venting. The ice will sublimate back to co2 gas and it will find its way out of whatever container its in, so you hafto carefully consider the venting.

    You run the danger of suffication from C02, this is dangerous.
    How about isolate the dry ice and run 2 radiators linked with water hoses and water flowing between them. One radiator located in a cooler with dry ice / ethylene glycol(prevent freezing) and the other in the room you want cooled. Have the cooler outside and the cooling radiator with a fan on the inside. Will perform same function without c02 danger.
    One radiator is submerged in the dry ice/ethylene glycol in the cooler and the other is in the area you want cooled with a fan blowing through it for heat exchange, a pump is used to flow water between the two.

    • @TheRenaissanceBuilder
      @TheRenaissanceBuilder  Před 2 lety

      Hello Shauna thank you for watching and commenting!
      So as dry ice “melts” the co2 gas takes up allot more space, that would make the bag blow up and most likely leak out. Having the window open is a good idea to allow fresh air but unfortunately that fresh air is likely hot else you wouldn’t need the cooler.
      The only way dry ice can work is if its in a vented container so that the co2 can be expelled outside.

    • @TheRenaissanceBuilder
      @TheRenaissanceBuilder  Před 2 lety

      I love that you are thinking creatively but i must preface this response with, dry ice is co2 and as it sublimates it releases large amounts of co2 in the air witch can asphyxiate a person so i do not recommend trying this!
      That being said, yes air mixing is actually a pretty good solution as it would produce a larger amount of reasonably cool air.
      But seriously dont play with dry ice in a closed environment.

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo Před 9 dny

      So… as water ice melts, its volume falls by about 8%, because water ice is slightly less dense than liquid water. As dry ice sublimates, it expands to 790 times the volume of carbon dioxide gas. So unless your “bag” is actually a high-pressure gas cylinder, you cannot seal in the CO2 gas. Your bag will simply explode after a small percentage of the dry ice has sublimated.

    Would you be able to use the dry ice for indoors if you made it so it was air tight? So the air goes through a copper/aluminum tube going in one end to the exit. So the dru ice doesn't go into direct contact with the air that gets cooled. The only thing that is in direct contact with the dry ice is the tube. And the cooler that the dry ice goes into is air tight So you can lock it down with no air flow.

    • @TheRenaissanceBuilder
      @TheRenaissanceBuilder  Před 2 lety

      Thank you very much for your question Angela!
      So im going to hafto say at this point that is a big NO, for two reasons.
      One is that dry ice is co2 in solid form and as it melts/vaporizes (also known as sublimation) it puts large quantities of co2 in the air. I believe you already know that one im just being thorough.
      Point two is that if you seal dry ice in a container then as that dry ice melts/vaporizes (also known as sublimation) then it will raise the pressure inside the container (as in the gas takes up more space than the ice) so unless the container can hold tens of thousands of psi it will explode.
      Sooo i hafto say no.
      The caveat here is that you can vent said container to the outside but the risk of asphyxiation is so high that its very dangerous.
      Whatever you do please be extremely thoughtful and careful.
      I hope that was helpful, and again thank you for asking!
