  • This is one of several promotion videos made for the "Close To You" single. Karen was 20 years old at the time. Richard was 23.
    I can still remember how so many people were amazed with Karen's voice back in 1970, but how even more amazed they were when they saw her playing the drums and singing at the same time.

    I am with all you that say I almost always cry when I hear Karen sing. I am 73 years old and she still affects me in this way. I am just a few months older than Karen would have been now. She is simply the best of all time. She seems to also have done this sone in one take. She was also so good live, never making any mistakes. She passed 40 years and 2 days ago. RIP Karen, I love you.

      There is something deeply personal in the way she sings the song. That makes its so great. You get the feeling that she could be singing about her brother Richard. • @KNPrince
      @KNPrince Před 4 lety +18

      @@henryedwards4116 Basically it means that a person like Karen has or had an ear that allowed him/her to be in perfect tune with whatever song she was singing.. almost all of the people that had the pleasure to play with the Carpenters either on the road (live) or in the studio have been quoted... that they never heard Karen hit a sour note while singing. She was just that good.
      Karen was also known for being a stickler when it came to everything being "perfect" when the Carpenters were on tour. If a band member wasn't paying attention on stage and they hit a flat or sharp note.. Karen would wait for them back stage after the show... "What is wrong with you?" She'd ask.. "Richard and I count on you to put on the best show possible for our audiences. Those people are paying good money to come see our show! Being able to count on you is the least my brother and I ask!"
      Needless to say... while the pressure to be the best was always there... The Carpenter's have gone down in history as one of the best musical groups of all time.

    • @thegoose0m1
      @thegoose0m1 Před 4 lety +8

      Having perfect pitch is more than just the ability to always sing in tune. It means being able to recognize the "pitch" of a note just from it's sound. For instance; person A plays a single note on the piano, person B, with his/her back turned or eyes closed says that's an A 440. Person B plays another note, person B, "that's a C two steps above". They can also hear a chord and identity it...."that's a A flat minor with a diminished 5th" and so on. Most good musicians have good "relative pitch"; if they hear a note that can sing or hum a 3rd or 5th above, but perfect pitch is relatively rare. I was unaware that Karen had perfect pitch but I'm certainly not surprised....

    7th grader when this song came out. I had a spiritual reaction to this song. The chorus at the end of this song was a thrill. I liked her behind the drums. I felt I was watching a complete artist. Curiously she didn't talk like her singing voice. She sang like an Angel.

You are an angel Karen, and yes you'd be the first to deny that, but you are nonetheless. I was only 3 when this song was a hit, but the music will stay with me 'till the day I die. R.I.P.

      The RRHOF is a joke. It really doesn't matter if they enshrine The Carpenters. The same snobby mentality that shunned The Carpenters back in the early 70s (while they were selling millions of records) is the same balding, fat, lard asses that run the deal now...It's all about who can BUY their way in.

      The organisers wanted her to stand up as a singer. They asked her to lose the drums. The drums obscured the view of the audience and they came to see her sing, not to play the drums. But she lacked the confidence to finally emerge from behind the drums. Why you didn't see her as a drummer for long.

      Even so, she made this "recording" on first take, as they said in the beginning. That was her unaltered voice. They lip synched many televised performances back then, although Karen was fully capable of live singing to the highest standards.

    What a beautiful gift from God was Karen Carpenter!! I remember listening to this song when I was very young. I am 50 now, and hearing the lovely warm tones and harmonies just takes me back. I became a pianist and piano teacher, and I credit this song as my greatest inspiration. I have always wanted to sing like Karen....but no one can, nor will anyone ever have a voice like this. Thank you Karen, for sharing your incomparable talent with the world. You were perfect, even if you could not see it, but the world saw it, and still does. Now you realize it in heaven, and I am sure the angels are in awe of your voice as you sing in joyful happiness eternally!!
