- If you've not heard "don't become more valuable dead than alive", here is your first warning. This beauty queen Geneva Lopez and her boyfriend were not killed because of her beauty, it was murder inspired by greed. The Philippines is a wonderful and safe country; however, we can't come here with western style wealth and be stupid.. Thanks for watching.

Murder over money/greed can happen anywhere in the world. In this case one of the guys conscience (the driver) got the best of him and he turned himself and everyone else in. A few takeaways here. 1) Don’t loan money. You probably won’t be getting it back. 2) Don’t loan money even with collateral. The debtor may kill you to get the collateral back like in this case. 3) Make sure that you hire a good lawyer when you’re doing any land/property transactions. 4) If you’re thinking about loaning money, refer back to #1.
Thank you for watching and the great contribution to the conversation. I’ll pin this comments to the top so hopefully others see it. Best, Joe.
5. hire a bodyguard (if you can afford it)..or, always let your inner circle know your whereabouts
No matter what the case it's not there right to take someone's life.
@@AMACHiiBiongthe bodyguard is often the robber.
Obviously NOT the sharpest knive in the drawer, I mean, if you loan me money based on my land, and it's widely known, and you are offed outta da blue, who is anyone with a brain gonna point at first......ME....just dumb.
Worked with a guy who's father Fell in love and moved to Mindanao. He sold everything he had in Australia and purchased a house. 7 months later he died from a blunt object hitting him in the skull, evidently he tripped. Strangely enough the new wife acquired all assets. Within weeks her extended family had all moved into the house
Yep, tripping can be really nasty. Best, Joe
Don't lend money, don't do business deals.
Yea, go live in a cave and nobody will hurt you
never involve yourself with police officers, barangay officials etc in the Philippines
Why? Are they corrupt?
They are the big syndicate here
@@user-cb2kb8uc2q Its just like anywhere else. YOu know how many corrupt cops there are in America?
It was a lady who ratted out the former cops to save her own skin for being involved.
If you are not a criminal gangster, getting involved in lending out money to strangers or doing personal pawns is dangerous business. The people owing you might be bad and willing to cause you harm to cancel the debt.
100% with you on that!
this is why a lot of filipino use to say dont go to mindanao, dont go to tondo, dont go here there, because long long time ago a lot these things happen in the philippines as in a lot, but due to social media and modernization of people less and less of this happened and people changed and became more tamed ,but in reality it still can happen, so be carefull out there not all filipinos are good! or bad
Its greed that motivated these two former policemen that killed these 2 people. Greed happens anywhere in the world.
This could happen in Metro Manila.
The problem with southern Mindanao is that it is close to Indonesia and there are Muslim separatists in that area that the Philippine army has been battling for years.
But this happened in Luzon. Greed coupled with the wrong person can make these tragic events happen anywhere.
@@kevink1214 Exactly! The beginning of the statement confused me a little bit! Good we have the same thought!!
Lesson learned that never deal in any kind of business with the police Officer active or inactive in service
I dated an undercover PC (Philippine Constabulary) while I was stationed at Clark. She was doing surveillance on bars that were under suspicion of having underage girls. One day she had off, we went to John Hay. On our way, we were stopped by some PC. They surrounded us and when she showed her badge and ID, they took it and her. One of them put their .45 to my head and told me to go home and keep quiet if I want to see her again. They took off and I just sat there trying to understand what happened. A day later, someone left a message for me at Town Patrol that she was being held at a PC camp not far from where we were stopped and needed a ride home. I went to get her and when I saw her, I cried. She was black and blue all over. She could barely walk. Against her wishes, I took her straight to a hospital. She had broken bones, all over, internal bleeding, concussion. She told them she was hit by a truck but they knew better. I thought I was going to get blamed but apparently this wasn't the first time this had happened. A week later, I picked her up from the hospital and took her to her parents home. That's when we found out what was going on. Her father was a member of some political office and they were sending him a message. I was just collateral. I hate to say this but one of the biggest criminal elements in the PI is the PC.
Politics is a dangerous business here. Sorry to hear of your experience.
@@dvabio PC was dissolved/disbanded 33 years ago. At that time communist and Muslim insurrections were huge problem in the Philippines. The country is much peaceful now. Crime rate is lower than the US.
@@epifaniodeguia8364 That's not exactly true. Yes, they did dissolve the name but the same personnel remained. In 1991, it was determined that a new civilian Philippine National Police was to be formed by merging the Integrated National Police into the Philippine Constabulary, with the PC forming the basis as it had the more developed infrastructure. The PC was then removed from the Ministry of National Defense and eventually civilianized, as part of the Department of the Interior and Local Government, through attrition and recruitment of new personnel.
@@dvabio PC is gone. All staff or personnel are now either retired or dead.
@@epifaniodeguia8364 ...and their "trainees" took over. Now, I'm not saying things aren't different but from what expats are saying, not much has changed. As for crime levels, they are more reported in the US than the PI so any statistics on the subject are rather askew. Take it or leave it. Your choice!
Corruption and greed in the Philippines is endemic. I've lived and worked all over Southeast Asia for the past 30 years and by far the Philippines is the worst of my experiences. Why anyone would choose to move and live there is usually based on two things...they got little money and/or they're an old man that seeks to exploit young desperate women...often it's a combination of the two.

The home invasion you mentioned was the Petit family murders. The father survived, but the mother was strangled, and the two daughters died of smoke inhalation. Sad story: If they had a home security system the outcome would have been different.

Great point!
I don’t understand how offing her would get the land back in his name! The land would go to her family or whoever she willed it t to. He’d owe money the the new owner.
The land title is still under the murderer's name. They probably destroyed all copies of the pawn contract along with the SUV before murdering them. Posing as a buyer, you can ask to see all original copies of everything. That was the plan, but of course it didn't work out.
Hi Terry, Great thoughts on getting the paperwork back! Best, Joe.
As a former police officer knowing the quality of local policing he probably felt quite safe with his actions.
Good point.
Foreigners can NOT own property in the Philippines.
If your Filipina wants a house, RENT IT.
Or don't go to the Philippines so you don't get murdered by filipinos.
Joke, they can own property in other countries, wtf they playing at?
@@redbullvodka5696 it's Philippines not other countires
Its done be design. The government lures men to the Philippines and most lose a lot of money
A foreigner can own property in the Phills condo etc. but they cant own land
Pawning land is not valid for a land title transfer. Why would someone think they can legally get some property at a pawn shop.
It sounds like one of the killers used the land as collateral to borrow money and then couldn’t pay the loan back.
stuff like this is common in the Philippines......yeah makes no sense
Good point, even in the Philippines how do you pawn land?
It is not a pawn shop. Sadly these pawns happen a lot. The owner needs money for something and will pawn a section of their land to someone willing to give them the money. The ones doing it correctly you have legal papers signed so it is a legal transaction. Just like in this case, often times the person owning the property didn't have the money in the first place so they will not have the money to buy back the pawn and they lose that land.
The human heart is, above all, desperately wicked. With that the Philippines is at core still a very poor country, and there are desperados out there. Gun toting in public doesn't happen but there's a lot of it in the country. In such an environment, nothing happens until/unless it happens. Life is relatively cheap in the Philippines.
Wow, Thomas! Well said! Thank you for watching and writing. Best, Joe

Shit, man. I'm in my 50's and had a dream that I had terminal cancer the other night. It messed me up mentally for days. It seems you are far stronger a person than I am. May God bless you.
If the property was legally pawned to the woman meaning there were legal documents signed, if she dies doesn't the property stay with her family? The pawn doesn't just go away so it seems like not a well thought out plan.
Maybe if the surviving family is willing to pay for it.
@@YuYu-we2ys my bad. Yes you’re right.
Filipinas think money lending is a great business, 645 (20% a month). When playing with a few thousand pesos ok that's just a bit of greedy fun. When talking millions, no way known, not without a private army.

Lending money here in the Philippines or any money dealings is just too dangerous. We heard of a family that had borrowed money and the person that lent it to them naturally wanted to get paid back the 1.5 million pesos. She had to keep going back to the family and in the end, someone shot her while she was driving a car from a motorcycle. Smart move! My ex wife wanted me to do that too.
Do it the other way around. Get a life insurance policy on her name and put your name as the beneficiary. See what she says.
Owning a house is the American dream not the Philippine dream. Foreigners can not own land, property, a house or a business in the Philippines so why keep pushing the issue. Thus is what happens when foreigners are pushed by girlfriends/wives and their families to invest large amounts of money not in their name. These deals go bad all the time. Just say no.

Hi Antonio, Thank you very much for much!
So Mr Cohen was an innocent bystander who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The motivation for the offence was greed, but not greed in relation to Mr Cohen's money. He could have been penury or affluent. The second victim could just as easily have been another Filipino. advising Ms Lopez on a property transaction; or no second victim at all, had she been alone. The motivation for the crime had nothing to do with Mr Cohen being a foreigner nor his financial standing.
Be smart boys!
Nothing like blaming the victims.
Who blamed the victims?
