DOGS are a man's best friend - but for big cat lover Rafael Villafane it's his pet JAGUAR. Rafael, 50, has been caring for Maya, his 175 pound feline for the past four years. The music producer feeds Maya, who loves gorging on 2.5kg of organic turkey, fish, beef, deer and wild boar every day. To keep her fit and active he takes her for walks and even visits restaurants with Maya by his side. The pair often visit the park near his home in Mexico City, Mexico, where he walks the huge predator and lets her swim in the river. After her exercise, Rafael loves visiting his favourite restaurant and ties Maya on her lead around a tree - just feet away from the tables and other customers. At home, Rafael plays with Maya - tumbling and wrestling with her on the ground, to keep her in shape and stimulated. Maya lives in a custom enclosure built on the hillside of Rafael's home. Her living quarters cost Rafael about $50,000 and took nearly a year to build. Rafael's is one of several stories which appears in new Animal Planet series Preposterous Pets which starts on Animal Planet UK at 8pm on April 3.

@Hunnid P Are we talking about guarding properties or talking about animals capabilities? I am obviously didn't argue which one is stronger or scarrier, I specifically pointing out why Jaguar would be shitty as protecting your stuffs compare to dogs. And would an intruder smart enough to kick into the dog face while breaking in so it can alert people nearby? The jaguar wouldn't give 2 shts ad long as they are safe and untouched. That's why they trained and chose dogs over any type of animal. So I don't see the point of bringing strength and agressiveness over this discussion. And if you think you can kick the dog in the face and get away with it. Try it on my 54kg Dogo Argentino, I dare you mf

+Josip Čondić Jurkić Just by saying about jaguar - "hanging out with your own kind" proves your lack of knowledge about animals.
This animal was BORN in CAPTIVITY. It doesn't miss jungle, it doesn't know jungle. All it knows is a life like this. Don't compare being kept in captivity and properly cared for - not being kept in a tiny cage behind metal bars - to human in prison, this is primivite beyond measure.

3x dimwit in one message. How dull... Why don't you come up with something more original?
Sadly, I'm not the one who is a dimwit here. I'm glad you believe in what you claim, though ;)
Again, as every foolish person who knows everything in the world, YOU'RE COMPARING ANIMALS TO PEOPLE. This is being dumb at it's finest, even though in most of cases it happens because people love animals so much. I, too, like everyone at start, did that. I learned I was wrong because I accepted the fact I was wrong and naive.
Continue comparing animals to people, and responsible owner to locking children in basements, it will sure take you far, master Allwise. But before you do, I suggest you'd study animal psychology a bit. But I suppose you know better than for example the old director of zoo, Jan Żabiński, whom I base much of my knowledge on, better, anyways.
Lack of satisfying reproductive 'urges' or simply neutering an animal is for sure abusing it? No words...
Another possibly PETA-related animal 'lover' who takes it to the extreme level not even knowing much.
Who said that jaguar won't ever breed? Who said it wasn't neutered?
Do you have a dog or a cat? Then get rid of it as soon as possible. Because domesticated or not - guess what, it still has those urges, just as strong as this jaguar! They want to mate, they want to hunt/kill.
What do you do when your cat is in heat, then? Of course release her so she can run away and mate with the very first stray she stumbles upon? Or do the wise and keep her in your apartment/ neuter her as soon as her heat ends? Oh, wait, this is for sure abuse at it's finest... Because the poor animal totally knows/realizes it's ovaries/balls have been cut off. All the poor billions of cats and dogs...
It's so sad that the first example I can come up with - Jan Żabiński - disagrees with you... Well, I suppose he was a dimwit! After all he only worked with all possible exotic animals, including big cats, for a few decades.
Yes, this animal is no pet. And not because it's 'wild' - but because, tamed or not, it can and it WILL kill people. Sooner or later, in most cases. This itself is wrong exactly for that reason - the jaguar will eventually attack/kill, and it will end up put down. The first comment I wrote just before I even learned that about big cats - that they can never be tamed enough to feel safe around them.
And that's the reason it should be not kept as a pet. That and only that. Other than that, for rich people with plentys of space and right conditions - why not? How's it worse than zoo? In my humble opinion - thousands of times better. Because no zoo animal comes out for walks in the forest.
People keep animals as pet, wild and domesticated, this is the basic of our "URGES" you so love to mention. They did, they do, and always will. Why does it surprise and anger you? It's an urge after all.
'Wild' animals can be perfect pets for many people. And if we didn't start keeping and breeding WILD animals, we wouldn't have DOMESTICATED animals - because they all come from wild creatures. Dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets.
Animals can be perfectly fine and 'happy' in captivity. If kept properly. You claiming they can't be, just proves your ignorance and lack of knowledge you're so bitter about me apparently having. Yes, sadly I have more experience and knowledge than you, your comments prove it. Another typical YT user who thinks he knows everything in the world and rages when someone disagrees with him. You don't understand how animals 'work' and you refuse to learn. Simple.
As every animal 'lover' who lacks knowledge, you will claim living in the wild is ALWAYS better than living in captivity. You probably think that's because "the animal can go where it wants to", while in captivity it can't? Too bad you don't know how wrong you are ^^
I'd suggest you checking why it's so easy for hunters and their dogs to corner a hare and make it go where they want it to go so they can get a clear shot. Or what will in most of cases a poor animal "prisoner" do when it manages to escape it's prison.
Do you think it would do much better in the wild because it could breed when it wanted to? How about a tiny, sweet example of how most of animal offsprings end up in the wild? When a mother cannot take care of all of them and some starve? Some are killed during their first hunt, or crippled and trying for days/weeks to follow their mother and siblings, to eventually fail and die?
Some are simply slaughtered in front of their mother by a male who wants to mate with that female? Have you ever seen a lioness, who just got her cubs murdered by a new male, run around, calling her cubs, hoping they're somewhere out there and will answer to her? Calling for DAYS, non stop, until she gives up, goes into heat and mates with the very killer of her cubs?
Or a female zebra going nuts to protect her newborn calf from a male who kicks it dead in front of her very eyes?
How many human women would willingly and happily have sex with a man who came and murdered their children, and carry on with their life, content with how it is?
Have you seen documentaries about monkeys and their offspring killed by a male? How they 'mourned' over their offspring's body for hours/days, refusing to let it go? Is it better? Does it make the animal 'happier'?
Do you think every animal in the wild can breed? That it can't be born infertile or can't find a fitting mate? Does it mean it's life will be a misery? No. It will carry on like any other animal. The heat/season will be gone and it will live on. Without horrible mental scars to change it's life forever.
Breeding doesn't make an animal 'happier'. It's a basic instinct of survival and indeed a goal for many, but can be simply gotten rid of by neutering an animal - or providing it with a mate.
Living in the wild is not 'better' than living in proper captivity. A life of a prey is constant stress, fear and death, often being crippled and dying for weeks.
Life of a predator is too a struggle for food. One mistake, one wound and an animal will starve slowly, unable to hunt and provide itself food. Or die from infection in agony. Or from old age when it simply has no teeth and too is forced to starve. No one will help it there. Is it better for the animal? Does it feel happier that way? If animals could speak, I wouldn't be sure of an answer. Life in the wild is better than life in small, empty cage with metal bars, with a bowl of meath from slaughterhouse. But it's a struggle every day - from birth, to death.
Yes, I too am deeply hurt when I see lions and panthers in cages not much bigger - or smaller - than my room. Metal bars around, one single log as entertaiment. This is sad, heartbreaking and should be forbidden. But captivity isn't always the same. It's foolish, immature and stupid to say every captivity is bad.
In proper captivity, animal is provided with space, activities, entertaiment right for it's species, and FOOD.
If it's ill - it will be treated. If it's old - extra care will be added. Again, in PROPER captivity - such one exists.
I'd gladly throw a few examples of difference between animals in captivity and humans in captivity on your plate, and what exactly makes animals suffer in captivity, especially predators, but I'm afraid I'd just waste my time and keyboard. You know better.
I'd suggest you giving Jan Żabiński's books a try, if only they come in english/whatever your language is version. Or any other good exotic animal zoologist and zootechnician's books. Maybe this would change your point of view a little bit and make you hold on a little bit when it comes to insulting people.
      Have a nice day.

Most of cases of big cat and human friendship end very badly, but I sure hope you will be an exception, and that you're taking better care of her than many zoos would where she'd be stuck in a tiny cage, dying of animal's worst captivity enemy - boredom. There seems to be a lot of understanding between you two, you seem to know what you're doing, and if so far nothing happened, I hope it will be enough to don't let any truly bad accident happen, ever.

I understand that cheetahs can be raised from cubs and effectively turned into 100-pound house cats; that's a notable exception among wild animals, and big cats in particular. I have never heard of anyone even attempting to raise a jaguar as a "pet." Jaguars are big, strong, powerful cats -- pound for pound, one of the strongest, and considerably stronger than the typical mountain lion/puma. The girl shown in this video appears kind of smallish, but she's still built like a tank, with jaws that could crush the skull of most mammals. It appears the guy in the video has a great relationship with his cat, but I would never seriously consider a jaguar as any sort of animal to keep in captivity.

I've always wondered why there are humans that don't believe that an animal like this can actually be friends with a human without ever harming him/her.
Then I realized that it is because of our human nature, humans are backstabbers by nature, so normally they think that every other animal is like them, and that makes them lose their trust in everything.
But animals aren't actually vindictive or backstabbers. And personally I'd put my trust into any animal that knows me well enough than into another person.

I totally agree, just want to add that people consider wild animals only as danger killing machines, even friendly animals like in the video. They convinced that friendship is unreal and animal one day kill their keeper for sure. Sadly, but there were many incidents that confirmed this opinion. The reason I think is that many people take wild animals as pets just for show and fun, they don't communicate and understand them, in such way incident is inevitable. But society doesn't interested in relations between animal and keeper, they just continue think that these animals live only to kill and can't have any feelings.
P.S. I really tired of reading comments like "this man will be eaten by this cat one day", I just believe that this is impossible without serious reason.

Exactly, even dog owners get bitten by their pet dogs, but if those dog owners know how their dog feels and why did it bit them, they will almost always say that it was their fault that provoked the dog into biting them.
Same thing for every animal. As you said, if you know how to communicate with it, know it's wants and needs in the moment, there wouldn't be any problem.....it's all about mutual understanding.

umm excuse you? dogs have thousands of domestication behind their backs. jaguars, on the other hand, are and will for always be wild animals. these animals have millions of wild instinct in them, and when they decide to snap at their owners, the cat will either end up in a tiny cage, or will be euthanized because ''omg it's so dangerous''. can't believe you can compare a domestic animal to a wild apex predator. y'all should be ashamed of yourselves, jaguars do not belong as somebody's pet. you know what else humans are? selfish. they thing that, omg this animal is pretty, that they can go right ahead and keep it as a pet. It's funny that every big cat owner says something like mine is different they won't attack me. But in time, it will eat you.

Tiger Expert Probably a few are actually tame enough to never attack their owner but it's foolish to make that assumption. It only takes one time and you're dead. Especially with Tigers, sometimes they'll play with you and not even know they are hurting you because they are such strong animals.

In most cases they will play with you, and the harder you try the make them stop, the harder they will try to prevent that. Eventually probably killing you. The more you try to get it off, the more it's going to hold you where it wants. And you aren't going to win in the strength game as it takes nine men just to control a tiger.
There was an account of a captive tiger tame enough to lick its trainer's hand, but then tore a wild lion to pieces.

The cats name (Jaguar) means "One who kills in a single bound" Why the fuck would you want it as a pet.
