- In October 1975 Bill Haley & His Comets toured Brazil for two weeks. They covered 10 cities in the two week period, with 3 concerts in Rio De Janeiro and 2 in Sao Paulo. This concert is newsreel footage taken by a news crew on October 26, 1975 at the Anhembi (private youth sports club) in Sao Paulo. Sadly this was Rudy Pompilli's last tour with the band, as he died from lung cancer 4 months later. Band members are: Bill Haley-rhythm guitar; Rudy Pompilli-tenor sax; Tony Benson-drums; Ray Parsons-rhythm guitar; Jim Leback-electric bass and Bill Turner-lead guitar.

Sometimes people don't realize just how inventive and talented this man was. He was the ultimate performer. Even late in his career (like this) his phrasing, tone, tempo and delivery were impeccable. He had the power to move people in a deep and meaningful way. Always the consumate gentleman and professional, he was as good as they get and always had the respect of some of the biggest acts in popular music such as the Beatles and Elvis. Long live Bill Haley.
That's my father playing rhythm guitar all the way to the right - Ray Parsons aka Pudge. RIP
YOUR FATHER! oh my god! i love your father! I'm from brazil! do you have facebook? best wishes from brazil!
My father also died in 1994.
Sad, but I'm glad to know that your father was in Brazil at a much better time than today.
And I'm glad that someone has recorded his coming so we can remember today.

Hi there. Was he with the Comets for a long time?
@@ryanhammel2658 Yes I believe several years.
Very cool cheers
Yes indeed-even when hampered and severely weakened by lung cancer, he still knew how to compensate and still get it all across. Rudy was the all-time greatest.

ahhhhhhhhhh.... this is real music.... what happened to real music.... wish we could go back into time....
What a joy to see youngsters enjoy Bill and the boys
I ador-re him! The king of rock-n-roll & boogie!
Nessa época assisti o Bill Haley e seus Cometas no parque de diversões chamado Play Center em São Paulo ao ar livre...Foi um show sensacional!
Eu estive lá também, pena que não há registro desse show.

Verdade...uma pena...
Awesome performance. Even though Rudy Pompilli obviously was seriously ill he still gave his all. Been seeing this footage for years here on CZcams. Please keep it. It's music history.
I certainly will!
BH was a true giant whose legend will live on. Mindboggling great version - the crowd is almost pogoing ;)
Que honra saber que eles estiveram aqui no Brasil !
Duas vezes
What does that mean?
@@kennydobbins9644 He said that he loves these old rock'n roll and not these canned nowadays music!
O DEUS DO ROCK DESCE AO LIMBO TRAZENDO AS TÁBUAS FORAS-DA-LEI.
que raridade, nunca tinha visto e sou brasileiro
Yes our Billy was a real king of rock'n roll with several others. I shake again and rock.
What about Johnny Cash.
You are so right!
HOW many other people had Elvis, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis AND the Beatles as their OPENING acts????
He was there with the music before anybody else!
Look how hype the crowd is, how much fun they're having, it's amazing. I love watching this video.
You'd be amazed how little entertainment Brazil had in the 70s. Alice Cooper came in 1973 and it was a riot, as it was unheard of international rock artists coming here. By the late 70s it was commonplace.
Yeh I love rock and roll for ever! I m brazilian too, unfortunatly...
Isso que era show de verdade todo mundo cantando dançando e se divertindo curtindo o bom e velho Rock and Roll.
Thanks for the reply Pick
HE MADE THE GENRE
One of the last bits of footage we have of Rudy pompilli. Very sad to see him here and later Bill in 1979 in poor health. But nice rhythm guitar work by Bill it sounds great!
@Pickinbuddy Your CAREER is a BEAUTIFUL and AMAZING one, friend.
THANKS for your contributions to Rock&Roll and for kindly writing in this space.
when i feel a bit low a good dose of Bill and the boys does the trick
Thanks to Pickinbuddy for putting up this great footage!
The band sounds wonderful. What a shame about Rudy, he looks really sick. Brave guy though, touring when he was so ill. What a great sax player, the comets were never the same without him.
Nice clip... Love Bill Haley...
god bless rock n roll ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the band that started it all bill haley ,,,,,, and the comets ,,,,,,,,,
Espetacular no Brazil
Pure genius
Wonderful article in this months Now Dig This Uk RNR mag a in depth interview with Johnny Kay with Bill from 1960 onwards wonderful insight and how great Billy Williamson was a must read for any Bill fan.
Back in 1975, the original Comets were all retired from the band for over 10 years--and went back to working day jobs. It was ONLY after retiring from their day jobs in the 1980s that they got the idea to perform together again. In October 1987, I had gotten them booked at the Philadelphia Music Awards, and it was the first time they's even seen each other in 22 years! They remained together since that time...
Bill Turner
They sound fine!
🇧🇷🙂👍 Legal Muito BOM Parabéns pelo VÍDEO 👏🎼👏👍
Muito Obrigado!!
Remembering the King on the anniversary of his death
The Pure R&B. Great. Willian (Bill). Was 50 age.
love this vido
Excelente
Go Bill Haley! Along with Carl Perkins, they are the real rock and rollers!
Hi Rusty--sorry for replying so late. Yes you are right about Bill being a country artist prior to his rock & roll career. Those older records only became available in the 80s...and many of us have never heard them until then! There are 2 albums "Hillbilly Haley" and "Rock The Joint" (UK) which feature these Essex tracks--with each song, you can hear Haley evolving his sound closer and closer to R&R till it all exploded like an H bomb with "Crazy Man, Crazy" Get those CDs if you can.
Un estilo y una calidad inperdurable
Long live dead rock'n roll!
Johnny Kay was a very important part of the Bill Haley legacy--he was one of the main reasons Haley was able to make the transition into the 60s UK rock scene as smoothly as he did; along with the introduction of the electric bass into the band's sound. Johnny was also at a similar age as the new young audiences in Europe and the UK.
eu estava em SP na epoca eu era um garoto e não pude ir ver o show eu era pobre e meu pai me deu um LP de bill haley ouvi tanto que quase furei ainda hoje eu tenho ele
Believe it or not I was live that day
Brasil was an incredibly BEAUTIFUL place. While we were in Sao Paolo, I bought a Del Vecchio resophonico guitar, which I still own today. Nato Lima of Los Indios Tabajaras played it and told me that it was the best Del Vecchio he ever played...
Great !
👏😍💟🎻🎼🎶🎸🎷
Ripped from a DVD that I authored at least ten years ago, you can see the start of the DVD menu at 0:06, Im sure I made this for one of the band members.
it doesn't matter, the man is dead. but his song will always be the epitome of rock and roll, none other can takes it's place, whoever eisner is, he hasn't robbed nothing, you can't rob what isn't obtainable, and talent can only be witht the one endowed with it, never stolen!

Ta explicado o porque que gosto de rockabilly dos anos 50... nasci em 75 kkk
Ciao Paisano!
I'm of Napolitan descent--your English is really great; the last time I spoke Italian was over 40 years ago, so it's me who's rusty! Usually when Bill Haley did a TV appearance, was during a tour--and it was a short appearance used in promotion of that particular tour--so it usually consisted of 5 or 6 songs--mostly the hits plus "Rudy's Rock". It's highly doubtful he would use "Framed" on that type of TV appearance.
Buona Fortuna!
BT
If any A&R would have seen this now... he would have been drooling and they would have made 20 million over 8 months.
Antológico
Bill Haley's base player, Jim Lebak just passed away today ( Jan.28th 2014)
The band used to perform "Framed" on its live concerts, sung by Nick Masters--One lp has it: "Bill Haley Scrapbook-Recorded Live At The Bitter End" on Kama Sutra Records KSBS-2014
Good luck finding it on vinyl, though the last Bear Family box set of CDs has it.

By the way--check out the CZcams video for the Philadelphia Music Awards 1987 and you can see the report on "Entertainment Tonight" which includes footage of their performance that night!
2:07 carrrrllllllllllllllllllllllllllll are you???
I am sad to report that the drummer in this video, Tony Benson died from lung cancer 12/26/19...
His sax player died about a year later after this
Rudy Pompili was the sax player. He died in February 1976.
OK--thanks...I guess his profile picture had me confused!!
@Rusty350 Hi Rusty--that is Rudy, but unfortunately he was dying from lung cancer. He passed away 4 months after this tour, and he was 56.
thanks you so much! I hope I'll be able to find them.. but.. do you know if there is some video version of it?? I won't ask you anything else no more :) (sorry but my english is not so good... I'm italian)
A rock party in Brazil.
Poor old Rudy wearing a wig because of his cancer.
R.I.P Rudy & Bill.
The term Rock N Roll was coined by Cleveland Disc Jockey Alan Freed in 1955.
@originalfunkyfry Interestingly, THIS tour was the last time in Bill Haley's career where he actually played to audiences of young children! Many of these venues were private athletics and sports clubs where the wealthy class of Brazil sent their kids--since there was no middle class; just rich and very poor! Of course, even on Brasil TV "Happy Days" was a hit show, and the kids all heard "Rock Around The Clock"...
You are welcome.
Well---Haley was already the King of rock & roll BEFORE Elvis even had a career...
Haley is perhaps the only performer in history who had BOTH Elvis AND the Beatles...as his OPENING ACTS!!
That's how ahead of everybody else he was back then! Elvis and Haley were also friends throughout their careers--El dropped in on Haley when he was in Germany in 1958 and also in the early
70s, when Bill appeared in both Las Vegas and in Memphis! Almost nobody know about this!
hi! beautiful video!!! but... does someone know where I can find a live version of "framed"??? thank you so much!
the only original left is al rappa ,,i was over his house looking at drywall in the celler that needed fixing up for his band room ,,,hes 83 ,,,i got his autograph picture and we talked for an hour ,,he lives in springfield pa ,,,,steve norwood pa
@dmljm2 Yes I know...the author of it is one of my BEST friends; and also my attorney! We went to college together from 1971-73
Brazil is such a beautiful and amazing country!
bil is punk rock
For récord in vhs
Originally the expression "rock & roll" was an old Harlem expression for sex, hence the line rock and roll with my baby all night. Songs like 60 minute man were another example of this reference, "I rock em roll em all night long I'm a 60 minute man". It is true that DJ Alan Freed made the term rock & roll popular with the then new form of music.
Hi Wendy--I was a good friend of your Dad! What town/state do you live in?
Sorry I'm just now seeing this - I currently live in Florida, but I'm from Delaware County right outside Philadelphia. My brother Chris Parsons lives in New Jersey still I believe!
Why aren't the origional comets with him. Did they separate for some reason?
bill halley was in brazil in 1965 and sang in poa (porto alegre) gigantinho stadiun, 2 friends of mine saw the show, it was wonderful!!! i hate brazilian music, i am president of elvis presley´s fan-club, i live in floripa, sc, i love rock´n´roll in the fifties!!!
Foi em 1975!
False! Al Rappa joined the Comets around 1959-60 and stayed till 1969.
The bass players on the Comets before him were: Marshall Lytle; Al Rex and Al Pompilli.....and Lytle & Rex are still living, as are Frannie Beecher, Joey D'Ambrosio and Dick Boccelli!

Well, check out the 1937 recording of "Rock And Rollin' Rhythm Of The Range" by either Gene Autry or Roy Rogers...it wasn't a euphemism for fornication back then...
isn´t elvis the king of rock´n´roll? But bill haley was amazing:)
Plateia quase vazia
Bill Haley no brasil, ele não merecia isso...
Bill Haley is not the King of Rock n roll coss that is Elvis Presley
+Ivan P Bill Haley played real rock & roll his entire career, while Elvis changed into a more country-pop Las Vegas style.
+lakefloor With all due respect to both of them, Elvis actually was a solid rhythm guitarist on a technical level...he listened a lot to Bill Monroe and Flatt & Scruggs, and that is evident in his rhythm guitar playing. On the '68 Special, he's playing some good bass string runs on "Baby What You Want Me To Do". Most people don't know this, but Bill Haley was quite a good lead guitarist--he had that style of playing similar to the Delmore Brothers and Arthur Smith; that late 40s country boogie style.
Johnny Cash is the king of music.
+Ivan P i like elvis. but bil haley was great. ok
Yes of course 👌
Publico decadente 70's
Poderia ser pior, decadente 00's
What does that mean?
La gente tiene derecho a divertirse y a bailar sanamente...Bill Haley es sano.
Crazy Man, crazy
Great!!!
