- The 2004 quarterfinal between Roger Federer and Andre Agassi is a match remembered as much for the extraordinary weather conditions as the tennis itself. Played over two days due to rainstorms, the match resumed for its second day in extreme, blustery conditions that defined the iconic encounter.
The Swiss led by two sets to one when rain halted play on a Wednesday night, and Agassi initially handled the daytime wind best as he sent the match to a fifth set when play resumed on Thursday.
Federer was embarking on the first leg of his five-year run as US Open champion, while Agassi was in the twilight of his career, just two New York appearances to follow before his 2006 retirement. They would meet again in the 2005 final, with Federer winning in four sets.
The 2004 US Open was also notable for being the last US Open played on green courts, before the well-received switch to blue ahead of the 2005 event.

I find the difference of Agassi movement between 2004 and 2005 (final against Roger) striking. 2004 seemed to be Agassi's last year where he could cope with his developing back issues. His movement is still pretty smooth for 34 years.
In 2005 he seems to be standing as much as possible, relying on his extreme strong technique. Like an old man, sorry to say that. Still astonishing to reach a US final with that kind of play.

I remember this game so well : Federer showing he's on the rise to greatness, Andre playing beautiful and classic Agassi tennis, the rain and wind souring what could have been one of the greatest games of the new Golden Era.
Not really. Agassi, the older generation was beating younger guys which means when Roger came, it was a weak era. Roger was lucky that Agassi had no legs and the energy of younger players to fight for every point. Agassi beat opponents with his tactical moves and quick returns.
@@thornados4969 by that logic, even today is a weak era given that people in their prime are unable to defeat djokovic and nadal despite those two being past their prime. I would say the golden era was probably late 2000's to mid 2010's, but with ruud who reached top 2 and stuff like that, it has not been as impressive and peak big 3.

Realize that for the first third of his career Agassi was more concerned with keeping his wig on than winning matches, for the second third he had drug problems, and for the last third he played with a broken back, and he never liked or took tennis seriously, realize he could have won 40+ grand slams.

Have to go with connors, he played with the small head racket t 2000 which was difficult to control, you had to have great ball stricking skills. He played Agassi when he was well past his prime in a 5 set thriller. Each generation has it's champions , my favorite was connors, he fought with everything he had, always. He still has the most singles titles with 109 wins. Federer is no. 2 with 103
it´s so obvious that the speed of the court benefited both players, it´s sad that they slowed the surface in many tournaments and that puts the advantage on players like Djokovic who is not an agressive attacker like Federer.

Agassi probably was one of the few prior to the big 3 era, or rather the era Federer started before the other two came along, that could have done extremely well today with the skill set he had then.
Most others, including Sampras, would have had to have evolved to play differently.

For a guy who really didn't like running much anymore, Agassi put up a pretty good match.
And that too at almost the end of his career against a young no.1 player.
Watching Federer keep up with Agassi from the baseline while using such a small racquet was amazing. The amount of extra focus/footwork you have to put in for these extended rallies with an 85 square inch head is insane. Such a joy to watch!

Players no longer grow up playing 5 sets in many tournaments as they did before, because men have to play 3 sets like women all except the grand slams... different mentality, now, everyone has to run 2X as much and can not afford to miss the ball at all because there is no time in the match to recover from being human...
No real battle, just men running like crazy afraid to miss...
Notice, no players under age of 25 with a slam win! This proves it's harder also with more career players than ever.

I lived through the super fast surfaces of the 1990’s. You don’t really want that. Tennis was boring, three shot rallies and weird Slam winners who really weren’t complete players just big hitters. Trust Wimbledon was so boring in the 1990’s. Slower courts actually have constructed points and creativity.

This match was so intense that I doubt that Andre intentionally tanked the final match in Houston. He also did it against Kuerten in 2000. Masters Cup was not so important for him.

As amazing as Federer is here, I think that Federer versus Nadal in 2 or 3 matches post Australian Open (2017) is EVEN better. After defeating Nadal in the 2017 Open, he just improved, beating Nadal quite badly. In some ways, Federer these last few years is even better than his younger self.
I am a big Federer fan but don't see it. His forehand was way better back then. His backhand solid and serve awesome.

he did not take tennis serius til 95.he skipped 8 Australian Opens.If he would played it,he would have like 12 GSs
he had mental and emotional problems. he only got his act together in 1999. but then he had a nerve injury on his back in 2002. the only solution was to take cortisol injections before matches. from them on, it affected his court movement. he still held his ground against #1 ranked federer and #2 ranked nadal losing in close matches. i think if it wasn't for that injury, he would have won a few against federer and beat nadal on both ocassions.
