It is long overdue that I dive into one of the heart beats of the Football Manager community, FM Arena. We head to their ‘Hall of Fame’ to break down the top 10 different tactics for Football Manager 2024, and there are some real head turners with absolutely wild formations that seem to be on the cutting edge of FM this year, hopefully one of them is close enough to yours to help out your save.
Much Love,
Zealand

Hey Zealand, you raided me a couple days ago which honestly.. made my year. You're a legend and a hero. Thank you so much.
Key Takeaways from this video. These are a few things that seem to be present in most of these tactics (presumably meta and does well in the match engine)
- A lot of them play narrow or even extremely narrow
- They play the tempo at max
- Most of the time they focus on playing wide, looking to under or overlap (so this section is worth looking at)
- the classic triple: distribute quickly, counter, counter press
- much more often, get stuck in and step up more (with a high line)
Most common positions are:
Defense: BPD
Midfield: DM (on support) Segundo Volante (on attack)
Forwards: AF, PF and IF/IW
+All if them have a sweeper keeper.
Ya and every tactic these guys made, uses this instructions.. It just a copy past, but there should be a limit on how many times they can use the same instructions...
@@donkarnage6986 what are you talking about
I also noticed on this version fullbacks are much better than wingbacks. Also that most goals are cutbacks for me
If you load them up in game, almost every player has tackle harder player instruction as well.
These tactic do amazing in simulation
But when you start using it, half of your squads will be visiting your physios 24/7
Essentially, you need 2 top-quality full teams, and some deep cover positions in order to run it effectively over the course of the season, paired with resting players between games as necessary.
Because you are over training. Remember players over 18 are getting all of their progress from matches and not training.
Over 24 they stop developing and training is just there to help against the decline.
You literally only need to half intensity train when players are fully green heart. That is all.
Even the defaults in FM are completely over training your main squad who will be all over 18 and mostly over 23.
Plus to get the most rest, fastest match recovery and somost highest fatigue recover you need 3x rest in the same day while also giving your players the day off from training.
It is supercharged recovery. Evidence based FM did a video.
Everyone is training wrong because Si provides no information to it's player base on how anything works on the game.
Imagine an rpg not giving you all the details about a sword and how to attack a skeleton. Fans would riot. But everyone accepts Si behavior.
@@Jimmys_TheBestCop you're telling me I've been training wrong for the past 6 fms. fuck me.
@@Jimmys_TheBestCopdamn so every tactics CZcamsr who has been saying to double intensity if at full green heart has been wrong??
Thats when squad building and fitness-rest-focus comes in. Rotation and rest and back-ups :)
I just got fm24 cause of you, I started as my home team Korona in Polish league, and am in the mud, everyone hates me , I keep loosing, but somehow it's still fun trying to not get sacked xD
This game is too addicting
for those who dont know, gerrard is knap. the legend.
Brian Stewart 442
"Do not click on every team instruction, keep it simple"
Meta tactics:
Gerrard might also be better known as the tactic making legend Knap!
Oh, I didn't know my boy Gerrard was the legend. This dude is a genius.
Knapp is a FM legend
Was it him that made that absolute belter, the Phantom Menace on FM20?
I heard RDF tactics talk about that hit early crosses helps get more players in the box, and can open up more space on the sidelines
The Katana one worked well in my journeyman save.
Took over a J3 league team in the middle of a season, my tactic didn't fit the team and felt a bit lazy. So went for a plug and play one and took the Katana one.
Interesting to see what made no. 1 as I've been making tactics using 2 forwards and 2 inside forwards for years and always found it the best for goals.
i took inspiration from the Katana (and other "meta" 4231 tactics) when i build my tactic. i play with hannover 96 in germany. in my 2nd bundesliga season (3rd overall in that save) now in january i'm 1st place, 3 pts ahead of bayern with a match in hand, while season prediction had me in 15th
Im giving that Katana 4231 a go with a Notts County save, I just need to find a good park the bus tactic for cup runs 😂
Katana won me a first season title on the 33th game by 18 points with Genoa. Only lost 1 match and in a cup final. Absolutely amazing tactic. Well done to the creator. I never usually download tactics, but this video peaked my interest and the results are amazing
I was two-time Europa League Champion, with an Icelandic club.
playing in the 5:2:2:1 formation against strong teams.
The one at 11th (and 7th) place would create a similar shape to how Man City play. They generally overload the left and then have runners going through the central right positions. Changing the left WB to an FB and the BBM to a BWM would maybe create that defensive shape City play. Think that looks amazing and might give it a try...but my tactic is working fine anyway haha
Idk if it's just me but I almost never use underlaps and overlaps as it tells others to wait until someone is there and not telling people to make those runs (which is what most people assumes it does, a wing back on attack will still make overlapping runs naturally).
It not just about that. It changes your players on the flank mentality and the only way get it is by these instructions if not you have to change the entire mentality of the tactic which is often not what is wanted
I saw the #1 tactic on FM arena weeks ago but didn't' pay much attention to it. I tried it in my current save (after watching this video) and I won both games 4-0. massive amounts of possession, 60% in both games, the DM's clean up well in mid, block numerous shots, intercept passes all over the pitch, zero offside, they also push up and both arrive late into the box resulting in one of my long range goals. Really impressed at how balanced this tactic is.
how do you see rankings of tactics in fm arena??
All the tactics with the intensity on the max, so fun....
Yeah, gengenpressing is so broken this year.
@@Xamxam4 always has been
Every year you mean
I promise you are not elite for playing low intensity tactics Im letting you know now lol
@@alexantony2544I agree. Have only played since fm21 so can't talk for every game.
Feel like its getting worse though.
The 343 Buildak formations are monsters if you have good segundo options. Atalanta (Koopmeiners and Ederson) can slice through the Europa League and Benfica (Neves and Aursnes or Neves and Luis after a season and a half) can challenge for the Champion's League in the first year of a new save barring injuries.
Great video.....even better kit! Go Flamingos!
Brian Stewart.
15th tactic: "particularly lethal" is an understatement for lower divisions. its a literal goal machine. i assume zealend only meant that formation without the roles of 13th would be his favorite in lower leagues because there is no way you can find player that can play; CF, VOL, RGA in that level.
Cheers for the shoutout there Z. 🧡
My main takeaway is given the gap between the best and 15th best tactic is 3.8 points (just over one win) and 5 goals (+17GD vs +22GD)............there are some tactics and instructions that are (ceterus paribus) better than others, but having the right players in the right roles/positions looks more important than fitting players around a preset tactic.
Alex is on fire. Solid metal bants.
Just tried out the TON 424 V9 and yeah, so far it’s preeetty good 🤙🏻
Every tactic had the same issue for me. Set up to get chances for a defensive player, DM or FB. Least marked, but due to the fact all players are equal, as such, your DM is as good of a striker as your striker.
I play a mean 4231 assymetric MC(L) who is usually a box to box. Started it cause I could find a way to play my beloved 4231 2CM on FM23 without getting constant annoying messages about too much space between defense and attack
I'm currently doing that. Starting at Dartford with nothing and after 2 promotions jumped to Birmingham. Just a few month away from my final coaching licence 🎉. Got Birmingham back into the Prem and finished 11th first season.
Liverpool hired Zidane and are ruling atm
The main thing I learned from this is not to overcomplicate things
My tactic is pretty simple. classic 433, cautious, playing wings, wide, max tempo and longer passing, counterpress, counterattack, max pressing, middle block, agressive and much higher defence with even higher instruction. It require very physically gifted players with high stamina and speed, but it`s very effective, you very score very much goals.
I only play formations that have 3 defenders.
Preferably with strong physical and mental attributes.
Hey Zealand check out the 343 Kappa Sym U tactic its a hall of fame tactic for the least goals conceded which is a giant killer i swap between this and and the Ton 424 for team character change during the mid season ive gone to do the quad with Lyon year 2028
That tactic got me a 9th place Premier League finish with Luton in their first season, and without making a single change to the squad. It's an absolute monster tactic.
@@SuperMickyChow for sure just switch the wb roles from su/df to attack and watch them cook, if you do have a good squad just make the wb > DR/DL pull one BPD to a AM/CM position with tackle hard go forward and enjoy the glory
S/o to Gerrard. Just took my first season in the J1 team from 20th after 8 played to 2nd after 24 played. 😂 just changed one striker to a DLF. AF and DLF duo.
This video came out at the perfect moment.
tl;dr from 18th to 3rd in less than a season with the Katana 4231
3rd season in the german 3rd division with Waldhof, my squad is good, but not very deep and doesn't allow me to try out different formations. The club is in massive debt so i have no money whatsoever to build a team, I'm building my squad with free transfers, LOANS and youth players.
I'm starting the season with only 1 win out of the first 9 games (4D/4L), morale is bad and management is close to firing me. This video comes out and the only tactic that fits really is the Katana 4231 (my backup tactic already was a 4231, so the squad was kinda familiar with it, but the roles aren't the best for my players but I'm desperate, whatever).
After 3 games, still no win, and management sets me a deadline. 8 points in 5 matches, or I'm fired.
We win the next 7 games.
We slowly climb the ladder and it seems like an upper-midfield finish. But then, other top teams start to lose and I'm once again on a winning streak, winning the last 6 games of the season and securing the 3rd place and playoff for the 2nd division, which I won 5 minutes ago with 7-1 over 2 games. Players in my squad really developed in this system and my offense is a powerhouse (my defense not so much :D)
Now it's time to get destroyed in the 2. Bundesliga.
Thanks for saving my save, Zealand.
All these tactics go against most of the things zeeland has said over the years like keep it simple, don't over lap or undelap. Be balanced. How does he reckon with the two??
Note that these tactics work best on simulations. They perform differently if you actually play the matches.
@@langletprolet8378 I mean, they'll play relatively similar, it's just that most people won't like the win 4-0 or lose 3-0 results that will be very frequent, with probably very few 1-0 or 2-1 type matches.
The main point Zealand is trying to make with the "keeping it simple" is that: if you have no idea what you're doing (in terms of combining the roles with the TIs), having too much instructions makes your tactic worse. It's pretty much been like this since the beginning of FM tactic testing where "meta" tactics will have the meta instructions on them to push for a marginally better score in the tester. That's the reason I put them on when I test a tactic. But a tactic with less instructions is more than playable in game.
Specifically, what underlaps/overlaps do is that it slows down your midfielders/wingers by decreasing their mentality, and increases the mentality of the FBs so they're more aggressive. So I would usually take them off if I feel like my team not generating as much as I like, or if I'm chasing a goal, for example.
@@caoxide7173 That’s an interesting tidbit. I wonder if having focus down left and right is why my FBs are constantly knackered lol, it does make sense. Maybe when I need to conserve energy of my players i should turn them off
@@langletprolet8378 No, they literally don't I am using Katana 4231 - have used various iterations of that creators tactics for quite some months now. I am top of the league - won every game other than 2 (drawn 1, lost 1) with 5 games to go. I can tell no difference between simulating and playing.
I missed you Zee!!
I challenge anyone to find a top 15 tactic with an intensity that's not in the reddest red.
On another note, I think intense tactics work because they don't require too much team cohesion. Once you've got a team drilled for a year, you can rely more on sit-back tactics.
No.3 formation gives me some league winner Leicester flashbacks.
fm-arena getting some love is good. They do really good work over there
Surprised not to see the 4-1-4-1 here. IWB’s, BPD’s, DM on support, Winger and IF on the wings, AM and SS, and AF. Absolutely broken. Won me leagues on its own.
the 4-3-3 trio is a old exploit tactic since fm exists lool
Hey Zealand, video recommendation try the worst tactics on Manchester City in the premier league⚽️
No links for the tactics? Is it easy to replicate manually?
How much does the functionality of tactics change over different version of FM? I play FM22, would these tactics work as well there?
You might not have some of the roles and instructions available, but the core tenets of high-intensity gegenpressing hold true. It's all about outscoring the opposition.
Is the next edited live stream VOD coming today?
Suggestion: I need a TOURNAMENT among just these 15 formations. Ty
I haven't downloaded tactics since FM 2009 because 90% of my satisfaction comes from creating tactics. With that being said, it's always super fun to see how other people are playing. The thing I can take from this is, "go wild!". Some tactics have weird shapes and pretty much every single option marked but still look like they can work lol
Another great video
Gerrard is the Legendary Knap btw
I would like to play with Catenaccio formation but it is hard to find a suitable team.
With that tactic i finished 3 seasons undefeated with Inter Milano, lol
I'm interested to know how you all keep the game enjoyable once you know this. I find that sometimes, if my tactic gets too like any of these, it feels like cheating.
It feels like cheating TO YOU lmao these tactics will not work as plug and play most of the time and will require to tweak the instructions anyways
Do these guys do 7000 simulations with Manchester City or with lower division clubs? Does that affect the results?
I tried 424 with Hamburger SV. Got 1st place in 2. Bundesliga first year, then got the title in the scond year in the Bundesliga. My Venezia FC save is kinda mad too. Got 1st place first year in the Serie BKT. First Season in Serie A 3rd place, second season Serie A 3rd, 2026/2027 i took the title and won the CL. Both 424 and Katana are absolutely cheat code tactics
They test with player ca equal across the board. The ai teams they're testing these against are the same skill level. They also have it in a "perfect world", perfect moral, perfect fitness, max team cohesion and tactical familiarity, no player traits.
Are there any player instructions?
You can’t have a video with the best fm tactics and not include delicious story. He is the tactic master.
Zealand wearing a kit that would drive me to microtransactions in Ultimate Team 🥵
Shut up ya gee bag
Is Ten Hag just shuffling through these 4-3-3's hoping that one of them works? 😂
Does it matter if my players can play the respective positions or not?
Very much so, you should build your initial tactic around the players you have.
For some reason no matter how good my team is and what formation i play I suck away so hoppfully one of these tatics can fix this issue
Might see the effectiveness on 4-3-3 tactics as I have started the season brilliantly controlling posession with one.
Sup, Z. Cool video but the title should be Overlooking the Best Tatics or som like that, cause it says 'Testing' and u didnt test at all.
All my Aussies, make this man react to the AFL (Australian Football League)
I use a 433 narrow with my own custom gegenpress seem to win everything with it turned willem 11 into a power house won the champions league within 10 seasons
With my tactic I won the champions League with Leeds in 3 seasons
Nah , you didn't bro
@@johndoe2769 i did though is the thing. Won the championship. Finished 4th in the prem then won the champions League the next season and third in the prem.
@@kelvinengland3991 its a cool story and all but it didn't happen
Boom! I musta been the 4,200th like baby! WWWinning :) Thx Z
@9minutes and 39 seconds play out of defence is spelled wrong 😅😅
Hey Zealand, you kept noting underlaps to seek out a IF, SS, or Vol-At. As far as I know, the underlap is specifically an instruction for the FB or WB to underlap instead of overlap. Just like how the Overlap instructions raise the attacking intensity of the FB, so do the Underlap instructions. This Underlap instruction does not alter the attacking intensity of any other position except for the FB/WB. So as counter-intuitive as it seems I think the Underlaps would effectively instruct the FB to crash the box when/if an AM/W/IF/St ends up wide. Although, I will note, even if the instruction is specifically for the FB, it could effectively have the same result as while waiting for the underlap the Vol might be spotted making a run.
But yeah, if you could test this, call up your contacts at FM or something, and find an answer, that would be great, as I think that's a very misunderstood instruction (either by me or seemingly everyone else).
should I worry about the very high intensity?
Interesting no one plays out of from the back
Yes indeed everytime i tried to it really doesnt work
Best tactic is go for a run Zealand ffs
How do players feel about using downloaded tactics from FM Arena rather making their own? Does it take away fun from the game?
my precious Mezzala not being used often makes me sad
Why is that almost everyone if there is no one on the wing uses fullback on attack?
problem with fm is the second you take your foot of the gas you give away a goal almost instantly, defensive formations just dont work, you hardly see a highlight unless you play 433 geg
Feeling sad they almost all don’t have play out from the back :(
Wanderers badge!
so you don't need holding midfielders, interesting!
Do you often listen to your assistant when he wants to adjust a number of things during and before a match??
I cant use these tactics because of the intensity. How do people play these for a full season? If i try my players just die.
Anyone got any tips.. Im at Burnley and drew man city at the Etihad in carabao cup, anyone got any tactical tips or do I just pray
I don’t understand, is segundo volante the new cm on attack??
If it’s not 4231 Gegenpress it’s dead to me😂😂
IMHO, what FM needs is an owner mode, for retired managers. Keep track of salary earned, on allow the player to run the franchise as owner, or owner/manager.
Imagine Pep buying a National level team, and managing them while having total control of finances.
The video could have been 60 seconds long or short. Play narrow, high lines and press. Positions and roles don't matter. Done.
👌
All of these have a TON of team instructions - is this a thing that better suits the engine in 24? In previous versions I thought it was better to have relatively few of them.
I had the same thought, i think if you have a good tier team with player that have a higher rating of teamwork which is one of the stats that says how a player reacts or keeps playing his position in the tactic, i think it will work very well. Could be different with lower tier teams, that dont have that high stats. But i think with this many simulations with like way more than 5000 matches simulated. It seems like this year the engine can handle many instructions better and it works more fluent how instructions are combined and work together. Ofc we dont have a comparison but it i guess it looks like it.
Where’s old zealand
my advice as new player to get inspired as much as u can and create your tactic never plug and play its not fun
