    The thing about Moldova is - the song has such a distinct balkan/slavic folk sound to it, where I live (Croatia) you hear this kind of music at almost every wedding, festival, night club, any kind of festive occasion really. And I think I speak for every other balkan person out there when I say that this song made me immediatelly want to get up out of my seat and start dancing kolo (a folk dance). It's just something about that distinct accordion (harmonika to us) sound that speaks to us.

    • @Hannig
      @Hannig Před 2 lety +24

      I think this is also a key argument when people talk about political voting - sometimes it's just that certain places vibe with a certain sound because it's familiar to them. Must play a part in bloc voting as much as the politics does

      It's not only the Balkans though, in many Mediterranean countries and even some nordic ones, this type of violin/accordeon-driven folk music is also really present so I'm actually not surprised so many countries resonated it with it at all !

    I was lucky enough to be at Eurovision this year. I went to the last three shows- Jury Show, Family Show and Grand Final- and Moldova were the highlight every time. The arena just erupted every time they took the stage, and I'm sure those watching in their living rooms experienced the same thing. Placement played a big part for them, as they were the wake up call everyone needed after some very dreary entries. I just always love the party song that gets everyone dancing, and I wish La Venda had been shown as much love a few years back.

    Moldova did more than bring the party. They brought decades of experience playing to crowds and delivering music. You ever watch an old drag queen, one who's been perfecting her craft in front of audiences since her 20's, walk out on stage and make that entire room come alive? No outfit, no prop, no set piece can compare to the time spent mastering a craft in front of audiences. That's why Moldova slayed.

    On italy being shoddy: the eurovision village was terribly organised. I was in Turin and we arrived 3 hours early and there were thousands of people outside the gates not knowing what was going on. Turns out the park was at full capacity and no one knew because the only way they told people was via a big sign 100 metres back in italian. I had friends inside and apparently they ran out of water in there before the show even started.

    Here's the thing with Moldova (and here's essentially what I think about Moldova every year). On paper, and in studio, it's a pretty awful song. But on the night somehow it was a crazy drunken fever dream that you want to be over immediately but also simultaneously never really want to end. Alcohol-infused chaos is Moldova's entire Eurovizh aesthetic and we love to hate to hate to love to love it.

    • @AammaK

      Providing subtitles is every national broadcaster's responsibility. In many countries you can opt for your native language subtitles as Closed Captions for Eurovision. In Finland, for example, people usually have either Finnish or Swedish subtitles turned on on their tv device, and the captions automatically roll during the songs and scripted lines of the hosts if you don't manually turn them off from the tv settings. Although TV-channels are required to provide captions to non-finnish/non-swedish speaking shows as well as finnish for swedish shows and swedish for finnish, it doesn't directly apply to music and song lyrics, but people have wished to have access to that too so the translations are provided. A lot of people watch the shows subs on even though they could understand the majority of the show, not only to understand the non-english songs better, but it's also a kind of added entertainment factor because the song translations are usually purposely silly and hyperbolic here. Sort of a national inside joke.
      It would be pretty awfull if the whole screen was half filled with text, both english and your own language. If your country doesn't provide subtitles, go and pressure them to do something about it. EBU itself has prioritized the country's performance to be completely visible, which is why we no longer have voting information visible during the whole of the songs, only the running order placement and the performing country's name are visible as small watermarks in the corner of the screen. I bet this is also why there are no open captions on top of the show's broadcast that you can't choose to turn off from your own settings. It would also only favour fluent english speakers and not help anybody who's enlish isn't as good. I can't imagine anybody actually wanting that.
      That being said the ESC youtube channel providing subtitles for a lot of individual songs official videos this year is awesome. I'm sure each country has been asked for english subtitles when they've sent the final official videos to the organizers. A couple songs didn't have subtitles, which is why I'm guessing either they haven't received any from the country's broadcaster or maybe some subtitles aren't ready yet.

After Serbia performed the way twitter exploded in whole region was amazing. the way ppl set aside bloody history and be so proud some1 from our region send actual great quality performance art piece that spoke to every1 so fiercely, rather than what we used to, like turbo folk ( Moldavia is kinda civilized turbo folk, if u r not familiar, u have to research that musical phenomena). the way Eurovision makes me feel like a citizen of planet Earth, and feel seen and represented like nothing else is the reason i will always watch it

    I'm not really a Mahmood and Blanco fan, but I feel like the only reasonable explanation for two otherwise totally acceptable singers to be THAT off pitch is technical difficulties. The music at these events is LOUD, it's easy to forget about that when watching from home, and if the artists can't hear themselves properly in their earpiece it's unlikely they'll deliver a good performance. It's really funny to me that in every comment section talking about their performance Blanco seems to be getting a whole bunch of shit when it is Mahmood's vocals fucking it up. What is throwing Blanco off, is that he can probably actually hear that they're very off. I don't think the dissonant vocal spaghetti was their fault, but I have some questions about those chimpanzee dance moves. Very different vibe from Mahmood just standing there like a very regal statue. Choices.

    Latvia were screwed because broadcasters did not want to hear 'pussy' sang by the crowd live on TV on Saturday night. They wouldn't have been able to independently bleep it because they'd be punished for censoring performances at Eurovision.

      @jazzycat8917 Před 2 lety

      That doesn't explain why more televotes didn't come in for them, Latvia's jury score was higher than their televote score

    • @joemorgan3124
      @joemorgan3124 Před 2 lety

      @@jazzycat8917 because producers stuck them in second, the deathslot, knowing that second place in the running order will limit the televoting.

    I never liked the UK song but Sam did such a fantastic performance. 2nd place is so amazing!!! Didn't even need a win, he did the UK proud and he seemed so lovely in his interviews. I'm happy with Ukraine winning. Doesn't matter if it wasn't the best song. It was so nice to see Europe show solidarity in such troubling times.

    So excited for this video gals! “I’ve prepared a little speech” bc I have *thoughts*.
    I was gooped and gagged over France. I think the concentration of votes at the top left a lot of the right side with so little points remaining to distribute maybe? But it was great to see the Big 5 (aside from Germany) step up for once. Italy was just sad - they were both clearly exhausted from touring, hadn’t seen each other in three months for any rehearsals and the staging was non-existent.
    Switzerland was 100% a vindication, as was Azerbaijan - if it’s only the jury vote (however shady) that gets you into the final then you are *going* to flop.
    Moldova was iconic and in a year with *far* too many ballads it was a welcome relief and quintessential Eurovision.
    Monika Liu is the president of Europe and should be respected as such. As a member of the Konstraktavists, our great mother was literally perfect.
    Chanel was unbelievable. That was one of the greatest performances in Eurovision history, it was like a Super Bowl Halftime show.
    Ireland, Albania, Latvia and San Marino were ROBBED. You may not have loved every one but I think we can all agree that having them over Belgium (fine song, terrible performance), Switzerland (y’all went from Gjon’s Tears to THIS!?), Azerbaijan (shady) and Finland (literally why) would have made an infinitely better Final.
    In closing, I’m thrilled that Ukraine won. The song was classic, iconic Ukraine and they deserved every vote.
    Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk, I will not be taking questions about the UK.

You are so hilarious 😂 Love the video, I personally loved the stage on paper but i ended up hating it in real life, such a shame the sun didn't work and i've also noticed the floor looked so dirty but we enjoyed Eurovision anyway 😅, And i agree with you, i don't get the hype over Moldova, i would've loved Latvia qualifying instead and Ireland over Belgium in semi 2 . Greetings from Morocco ❤️

    Thanks for the Eurovision content this year. 1 year since I found your channel, and I stuck around after Eurovision was over, thank you!
    Honestly, Moldova, UK and Serbia doing well is exactly why you don't judge a song based off its studio version alone. I knew Serbia would come at least Top 10 off the National Final performance alone, and after Israel Calling I put a bet on Serbia coming T10. I'm not going to listen to it on Spotify, but the performance itself was a work of art. UK was a 7/10 studio song that was 10/10 live because of Sam and his vocals/personality. And Moldova sent a party/knees-up song, it wasn't too much of a surprise to me but then it also got a plum spot in the running order after a long ballad lull.
    France doing badly was running order IMO, it was the closest song to Stefania, and also came directly before Italy, Spain and Ukraine.
    Australia... live, it was as boring to casual fans as Switzerland or Belgium or Azerbaijan. Sorry. I'm gutted for Sheldon (and I'm gutted for Marius tbh) but there was just too many ballads this year, it's lucky Sam Ryder brought an electric guitar with him.
