    When I was a kid growing up in the 70s, I wanted to be a truck driver in the worst way. My dad would take me down to the truck dealerships on occasion and the salesmen would let me sit in the cabs. Quite a thrill for a 10-year-old boy. I thought those Jimmies with the wraparound console were the bomb! Very impractical in retrospect. Seeing this guy driving shows how physical the job was, and how brutal this would be on a body day after day. Times have changed.

  • @michaelbressette2599

    I never liked the GMC Cabover, not sure exactly why, seeing the inside of one for the first time, I instantly liked what I saw. The Operations console had a nice wrap around which gave the driver instant view of all the gauges & buttons & switches so it was easy to view & get your eyes back on the road. I didn't expect this Model to be so organized & simple like this. I very much like this truck now & watching how it moved & especially the sound still gives me trepidations as I once had as a young kid.
    I have only had one trip in a transport about 20 years ago, it was a conventional White or General, I cant remember but my first impression was WOW cause I was up high in it & wasn't quite expecting the movement or vibration of it. It was a day truck as I remember it but fear came over me when we went over our communities Skyway Bridge & that's a high bridge so when we went over it, the guard rails that separated the pedestrians & the edge of the bridge where simply no longer there as I looked out the passenger window., I did & wasn't happy about it cause all I saw was WATER no bridge at all. Immediate freight came over me & almost panic LOL
    My Stepmom was the driver :P a small 4'7 roundish woman cowboy boots & all the lady accessories a woman could have & she was a force you didn't want to deal with. Her career started in the 60's I believe when her first husband had a heart attack at the wheel & my step mom now had no choice but to move her husband over best she could & take over & her husband to the nearest hospital. TO make a long story short, this is what started her Career as a truck driver.
    I judged a cabover by many aspects & usually if not always by what kind of reaction I had to it & most times it was with disdain & a frown LOL and by its paint & markings plus its physical profile as it was moving & often I would get an emotional response from these types of Trucks, most of them made me have a pending doom feeling & some just outright frightened me simply because of the loud sound as it up-geared followed by a plume of thick black smoke spewing out of its pipe(s) & its movement up & down shimmy & side to side rocking action & I swear these trucks had evil personalities and souls, if it had a paint job that gave it the appearance of having angry eyebrows especially if it had a single headlight on either side of that eyebrow & the cab itself was one that had a slim profile giving the driver very little room at all for stretching, I remember these quite well because when they started moving from a dead stop, the cab always jumped up & forward & then down as it shifted gears giving it the look of charging at something or you if it where in front of you generating a horrific fear within prompting you to get the hell out of its sight fast cause that truck meant serious business & you had no time to run away kind of fear they gave me LOL
    Holy Smoke I am writing a story here, well I guess this truck inspired me to get it out of my system lol
    I loved this video, thanks for the drive & inspection & a sense of how soon is this video over LOL
    I would seriously hate to see you in my back window coming up hard & fast LOL I am scaring myself LMDAO

    I had to watch this again. Back in the early 80s I drove a 71 Diamond Reo snub nose with the 318 and a 15 speed double overdrive. It was a blast to drive, such quick acceleration . My boss always wanted me to take the R model Mack for the mileage , but I would always jump in the Reo. A couple local guys here raced and used the 318s , they were quick motors. Just listening to this makes me smile.

Piles of worn out 318’s and 671s ..blowers shredded up in the aluminum pile. Sad but they were just to far gone mainly eaten up by the road salt and abuse from rookie drivers. None of the veteran drivers including myself refused to drive those backbreaking no power in the mountains Astros. 😐🙁

      @AVM-Music what I like most about Maximum Overdrive is it has several cabovers in it. Cabovers bring back good o memories. I know that movie was made back in the 80s & that was back when cabovers were common in the USA. Good times. These days the most common cabovers are only fire trucks, garbage trucks, yard trucks, crane trucks, front discharge cement trucks, concrete pumper trucks, military trucks, & non semi trucks like those smaller size ones. Those kind of cabovers are cool too but it isn't the same without a large number of cabover semis around.

    • @KevinRichards-my5oj
      @KevinRichards-my5oj Před 23 dny

      @AVM-Music another cool thing about them is they're easier to maneuver in than conventional cabs with their shorter wheel base & being up close to the very front instead of being further back away from the very front. Sadly the new length law in the USA eliminated the need for cabovers which caused them to phase out & replaced by more conventional cabs. In other words, the overall length limit increased which allow conventional cabs to pull longer trailers now. Back then, longer tractor "conventional cab" meant shorter trailer, & shorter tractor "cabover" meant longer trailer.
