Dave Mason is one of the greatest musicians of all time, but sadly one of the most underappreciated musicians of all time. I have seen Dave Mason in concert 102 times. Every concert has been great and he is still touring.
Still touring at 77! He actually played on the Hendrix version of it, backing Jimi on a 12 string. And Hendrix first heard the song on Mason's copy of Dylan's "John Wesley Harding" album.
Dave managed to get fired from Traffic not just once, but twice. He and Steve Winwood seemed to have a personality conflict. Steve claimed that Dave brought in finished songs while Steve wanted the entire band to write songs together. I thought it was just an excuse to hide the fact that Steve was jealous of Dave's ability on the guitar. Steve was actually a pretty good guitarist, but not as good as Dave Mason.
@lizzardwizard2000 Thank you that is correct, I think Jimi's version maybe had more air time. Dyan inspired a lot of people but he's a ways down on my playlist.
It's completely blocked by Dave and the bass player. Always have to stagger the lead singer on a stage plot. Put them off to the ride cymbal or hi-hat side. Directly in the middle will almost always block the drummer
That was so amazing, I have been waiting to see this in good quality for years. Please upload the whole concert of Dave Mason live 1974-75 midnight special concert. Mike Finnigan on keyboards and Jim Krieger are amazing also just a good band. Dave Masons guitar playing is really good from 1974-5 era plus when Jim Krieger do guitar harmonies together it sounds so good.
I always love watching live performances of my favorite artists. But as a drummer, my one complaint with Midnight Special is that they consistently ignore the drummer in their films.
Well, that seals it- The Midnight Special is by far my favorite CZcams channel, bar none. To find and post a true gem like this, how can any fan of rock music- or just about any genre- NOT love this? Fantastic, just fantastic.
Alone Together on Blue Thumb. It was pressed on marble looking vinyl. The sound quality wasn’t that great and one side was pressed off center! The later reissues with a shortened jacket and regular black vinyl sound excellent!
Well, Hendrix did it. Why not give it a try? It works. It has it's own personality. Maybe they'll upload "We Just Disagree" and "Let it Go, Let it Flow".
I had the pleasure of seeing Dave Mason first row at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago March 15,1977. It was an all acoustic set and enjoyed it very much but honestly would have preferred some electric also. Jennifer Warnes opened for him. I think it may have very well been this Midnight Special performance two years earlier that turned me on to Dave Mason.
I too have been a lifelong fan of Dave Mason, dating back to the Traffic days and even before. Also had the great pleasure of sitting right at his feet while he played a gig at a small club on Long Island about 10 years ago, mostly acoustic but still fantastic work. IMHO, his solo Album "Alone Together" is one of his finest bodies of work. Does anyone else out there still have the cream-colored vinyl version like me? A real treasure!
I don't know if everyone knows, but I make a suggestion. Listen to their 1976 album Certified Live. One of the most killer live albums I've ever heard. Mike Finnigan on keyboards and vocals is amazing. His version of "Goin down slow" is fantastic and in the intro he evokes Ray Charles. Listen to Ray Charles' version of this blues and confirm. The album is all good.
@@zoomosis Thanks. Fortunately I still have the double album since it came out in 1976. I also have it on CD, which I bought in the 90s. I'm 66 years old 🙂✌️
Well Dave played the 12 string acoustic on Hendrix version...he did struggle with it a bit, and did Jimi replace it later? Who knows, but this is ok. But I agree Hendrix version is a masterpiece
@@douggauzy6258 nope acoustic guitar.... struggling with it but it was a guitar. Mason did try the bass but was replaced by Jimi later..Jimi played the bass part
I heard Dave Mason's rendition of All Along the Watchtower long before I knew who Jimmy Hendrix was...love this !

He happens to be best friends With Mark Farner and Rick Derenger They Call them selves The 3 Christians
Very underated guitarist
Happy Birthday!!!
A terrific multi-talented musician from an era that had many of them. This channel deserves a Best on CZcams award.
Much of his stuff wasn't credited either, and others made bank.
Dear friend thanks for a trip down memory lane.
This is his song, hands down. No one can compare Dave Mason. Had the pleasure to see him twice. Always perfection!
Awesome guitarist 🎸 he was also great in the band Traffic with Steve winwood.

Mike Finnegan on organ... RIP, Mike.
A personal hero of mine...

This is an amazing rendition of the song! Dave does a fantastic job! 🎶🤘🏻
You know he played on the famous version.
@@bertbecker7532yes I do😊
Mike Finnigan on organ. And a helluva singer in his own right (RIP)
While I enjoy Jimi and his music this version by Mason is every bit as good.
I thoroughly enjoyed it too.
It’s Bob Dylan’s song.
@lizzardwizard2000 Thank you that is correct, I think Jimi's version maybe had more air time. Dyan inspired a lot of people but he's a ways down on my playlist.
Always got into Dave Mason's guitar tone and style of playing. An underrated player to be sure. Thanks for posting!
The drummer is killing it through the whole song😂
It's completely blocked by Dave and the bass player.

Reminds Rita Lee's drummer at "Agora só falta você".

@@tonylamosa3 that's 👍 good
Rick Jaeger on drums, I believe.
Had no idea Dave was such an accomplished guitarist - what a treat - amazing!
You must’ve been under a rock
@@williamjoyal3553 Yeah really, I guess every time I've seen him in vids or tv it was him playing "We Just Disagree." - Dude has chops!
In an alternate universe he could be as famous as Stills or Clapton.
us music fans from the ‘70s know all about Dave’s guitar playing; check out his Headquarters LP
@@williamjoyal3553 a few of them...
FAN FRIGGN TASTIC!!!!!!!!💥💥💥💥 That freaking drummer is phenomenal 😁 Mitch Mitchell would LOVE IT ..RIP MITCH...
That's a very good point!

I love the look of Dave Mason’s guitar.

Great Dylan song & great version by Dave Mason !!
Usually, I immediately can detect when a set of musicians have that upper-level skill. THIS is one of those outfits. Hands down.
Just saw Dave Mason in concert in May. It was great!
Dave’s great and his solo debut album Alone Together is outstanding.
Great performance! Best music channel on CZcams is here!

Wow, that was great!! He killed it!🔥

I just saw Dave Mason in concert in Tonawanda New York! He had a small meet and greet at the end and everybody got their stuff signed
I had no idea. 😮
Great band! Great cover!
Dave Mason actually played Bass guitar on Jimmy Hendrix recording . He knows this song well . This is fact !
He played a 12 string , a fact !
the rhythm section of this band just lays down such a driving vibe . . . wow. besides the great guitar work by Mason
The bassist and drummer are phrukkin' UNREAL!!!
WHO ARE THEY???
The drummer is called Rick Jaeger and the bassist... I don't know 😁
I agree. While I love Gerald Johnson, the bass player is killing it
absolute genius
Such an underrated guitarist and possessed a distinct voice. This channel will be burning up my smart phone.
Mike Finnegan on keyboards.
Yes Thanks! I thought I recognized him but couldn't place the name.
Dave Mason is fabulous.
Anyone remember his LP with psychedelic vinyl?
Yep, if I recall correctly it was on a label called Blue Thump and Dave was wearing an Abe Lincoln type hat standing in front of some bolders
Alone Together on Blue Thumb. It was pressed on marble looking vinyl. The sound quality wasn’t that great and one side was pressed off center! The later reissues with a shortened jacket and regular black vinyl sound excellent!
Oh that beautiful guitar!😍
There is a FULL Bob Dylan Midnight Special concert from 1976 I hope they have it in th archive. It never "aired" but they taped it!!
Dave mason..great 🎸

Great songs of his! I hope they do!
Feeling Alright ! Mystic Traveler! Only
You know and I know
Mason played the acoustic on Hendrix’s recording.
I love his passion. His leg and his little dance makes it feel he's really doing it great tho
Its in the Frak’n Walls!

WOW
I really like all versions of this song, except Bob Dylan's who actually wrote it.

Yes, is it.. Rick Jaeger
What year was this?
1975
Who’s the drummer?
Rick Jaeger
@@delmedeiros3570thanks bro
Who is that on keyboards?
Mike Finnigan
Nah! This is natural Dylan/Hendrix territory. Even Stevie Ray Vaughan couldn't have cut it.

I remember this version, he sounded like he was channeling Clapton.
Dave Mason was his own version of Eric Clapton.
Decent rendition, nothing too fancy. I give it a B-.
