I have watched both 2 parts and my honest opinion is, I'd recommend this to people who have less than 3 years experience in the workplace. The world has changed and now great organisations are focusing on how to create a "safe" environment so that all ideas and voices are heard regardless whether they are "powerful" or not. This is good for beginners to learn basic inter-personal skills but if one overuses it, he or she could become overly focusing on managing their careers rather than focusing on doing the right things for the business and the community.

    Personal power:
    - Ambition

    - Energy
    - Empathy
    - Authenticity doesn't get you far

#1 personal power is competency. Others are credibility, confidence and courage. Without authenticity, you have Jeff Skilling and Enron

I know the part about putting on a strong face! do some face exercises, and it can be achieved, easily AND authentically! The face is actually important when it comes to success. When you have a strong lively energetic face, every time you look into the mirror, you see success: you have what it takes to win. In that case, you don't need to "save face;" your face can save you. Awesome clip. Thank you, Prof. Pfeffer, for sharing.

I would disagree about the part on authenticity... short term lying can bring you ahead, but it is not possible to uphold a personality which you are not for your whole life 24/7 either you blow up your personal life or sooner or later you blow up your professional life... Me personally would rather follow someone who says „I am totally lost, I have no idea... but together, we will find the best solution for this problem and I will work very hard with and for you, are you with me?“ than Someone which I feel is a „fake it till you make it“-type... admitting failure with honest intention is, in my opinion, much more powerful and worthwhile than glossing up failures hoping that no one ever will find out...

Hi Jeffery - thanks for a good video - some ideas could be influenced with a different view from a more developed world - which to some extend is questionable in the US when you see how many are voting for XX. Specifically, the parts around empathy and authenticity. With many years at C-level, I confirm the importance of authenticity - people are not "stupid" and the best ideas and largest sacrifices will come from the most amazing places if you have the right level of humility - you might want to try it out!

4:13 I thought it was a bit controversial to say, don't mind about people liking you -- but to be honest I now I understand.
You can be putting too much energy in being liked, while ALREADY being liked OR you could be putting too little energy and effecting the organization image as a whole.
    Ex.
Lack of empathy = Meta or Amazon = mostly disliked
High empathy = Chipotle or McDonalds = mostly liked

I love it. I do think that he’s misusing the term authenticity. Authenticity has much more to do with recognizing one’s inherent drive so that when adverse situations occur the focus doesn’t waver. That focus is what draws other people. Of course words like I know how to fix it help it doesn’t need to be based out of telling an untruth. In other words, fail quickly and move on. If those other pieces he’s so eloquently stated are in place, that should be the natural reaction. ;)

Hopefully there is a middle ground between saying “I don’t know what to do” and “I know how to fix it.”
These kinds of simplistic binary messages is why we have the smartest people graduate from the best school and end up creating Enrons, MCI Worldcom and GE. No, you cannot act your way out of something you don’t know how to solve but that doesn’t mean you cannot learn as you go.
I am sorry this is really disappointing

  • @nueloblack

Dr. Pfeffer, I think you have confused authenticity with transparency - two completely different things. Otherwise, your books have opened my eyes to how many traditional leaders think and in doing so, I am able to adapt better to their needs - as you mentioned a form of empathy. Also, you don't have to accept the world for what it is in order to change it (see An Unreasonable Man) Ralph Nader adapted to how the world operates (i.e working within a system) in order to influence win-win, positive change. However, the danger being that power tends to corrupt simple minds... so overall, these teachings are both insightful and frightening.

Change the world? Why? Sounds kind of god complexish. _"The world should be "this" way and I'm going to make it "this" way."_ Meanwhile ever person, country, culture, and belief system is different and doesn't have to be the way _you_ may want them to be or may think they should be.

This is sorely a poor representation of what strong and effective leadership is. If the intent is to show you what leadership is NOT, then this is a great video. However, if the intent is to show a good representation of that then I would sorely disagree. Many of the viewpoints I disagreed on but the perspective of " you see on a daily basis that the world is not a just and fair place so people need to accept the world as it is," is exactly why we need change leadership who see the gap in the unjust and unfair world we live in and be courageous and motivated to change that. This mindset is why we have a gap in progression and why it is even more vital to have more leaders who see the gap and are motivated to change it.
