    Good to know about the steal bumper. I didn't know you can increase the tongue weight. I picked up a Hensley Cub WDH with a Mopar brake controller.

      Cool. Still, pay attention to the overall pay load with that increased weight on the tongue.

    If not already done I would encourage these Jeepers to drive their rigs to a certified C.A.T scale and have the vehicle s/trailer weighed. I tow a flatbed trailer with two Yamaha Quads with my Rubicon and had them weighed. The trailer and Jeep weight came in within 200 pounds of my total capacity. Things tend to weigh more that people think they do!

    Very helpful to one interested in towing with our 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport with a 3.0 L diesel engine.

      The tow capacity is 3500 lbs with a tongue weight of 350 lbs. Considering a R-Pod 171C to tow that has a dry weight of 2500 lbs and a 325 lb tongue weight. Working with the 80% rule that would be 2800 lbs total tow capacity. Concerned about tongue weight and not much room for cargo.

      @@CheaperJeeperTV I learned about frontal area limitation of 30 square feet for a Jeep Wrangler JL.. How is it that Jeep owners with this vehicle towing travel trailers with a greater frontal area of 30 sq ft?

    That first set up (Rubicon JKU) will have the 4.10 gears and not he 3.73 as you mentioned. Those are standard on all Rubicons. It's part of the package.

    I have a Gladiator myself, and one huge reason for that is I wanted a higher towing-capacity than the Wranglers had (or the Ford Bronco that came out since then -- it was only Ford advertising hype/VaporWare back in April 2021). I also may someday get a small travel-trailer so that extra capacity helps, as I'd prefer not to tow at or even near max towing-capacity of ANY vehicle I have (apply the "80% Rule" if possible).
    Consequently, the 7000lbs my Gladiator (Rubicon) can tow gives me that "headroom" I want for easier handling on the hwy and less wear & tear on the tow-vehcile.
    The small trailers on my Short List are (in no particular order): Airstream BasecampX 16, T@B 320 Boondock Edge and Scamp 13 or 16...OR possibly their roomier 19' fifth wheel (except for THAT I'd need to install a hitch in the truck-bed).
    ALL of those are well within the truck's towing-capacity, even if they were a tad overloaded (which I would avoid doing though).

    Here something a good question can a Jeep LJ can pull a 19ft Travel Trailer

    • @CheaperJeeperTV
      @CheaperJeeperTV  Před 2 měsíci

      There are many determining factors when determining if something can be safely towed. The "weight" of the trailer being a big one.
      I googled "LJ towing capacity" and learned it's 3,500 lbs. so similar to the example I used in the video.

  • @johnmills837
    @johnmills837 Před 6 měsíci +1

    Most tow over their GVWR. Battery and extra propane push it over tongue weight. Dry tongue weight is 260lbs. add 70 battery and 30lb extra tank .

    I discovered that you need to do your own homework, and only use CZcams and forums as suggestions.
    I had been towing a tt for years and 1000s of miles with my 2015 jku. I was at max and had everything setup, weight distribution, sway control etc etc. I bought a brand new trailer that is actually lighter and advertised lighter tongue weight as well. I moved my towing setup over to the new one but was having issues with getting everything setup as nice as the old one. I started watching videos.
    OMG, I have been towing unsafe, according to videos and forums. So the search for a steel bumper for the wdh began. The best bargain price and highest weight was the Smittybilt.
    Pull the stock bumper and hitch off. Printed on top of the stock reciver it states, max towing 7500 lbs, 750 lbs max tongue.( I know the 3500 and 350 for the JKU.) But what about the hype about wdh being unsafe using the reciver that bolts to the crossmember only....
    After more homework and waiting on a reply directly from Jeep... It turns out it is just that, hype. My original setup was completely safe, and had an even higher weight rating than what I went to. With the new bumper being heavy, I lost even more cargo capacity.
    So don't take all these internet "experts" word, that includes my words also. If the bumper wouldn't have been an Amazon Warehouse deal and didn't look better than stock I would have probably been upset about the entire ordeal. Lesson learned.
    I'm not bashing the video by any means if I came across that way. I enjoyed seeing the setups others have.

    its bolted to the chassis not a bumper

  • @GoldenK9Campers
    @GoldenK9Campers Před měsícem

    That 3rd jeep is so overweight and given the steel bumper, rack, and who knows what else Glenn is also probably way over payload capacity. Kudos on the weight distribution hitch however, but I strongly believe in the 80% rule. To be towing more than 3,500lbs in a Wrangler is a bit irresponsible. Also, I don't think you can just add in a different hitch and you can automatically increase the tongue weight of the vehicle. A vehicle's given tongue weight is based on 10% of the trailer towing capacity, and other things like it's suspension setup not it's hitch.
