Since I left my previous coment a year ago I have taken my 10 x 6 cargo trailer full of motorcycles over the Rockies 3 times and a utility trailer once over the same route. I was going from chilliwack to medicine hat each trip. Your video helped me prepare safely and successfully. I was so impressed I am modifying the 10 x 6 for light duty wilderness treks into the Rockies . Thank you Dino!
Awesome. The wilderness treks will be exciting. I’m glad you found the video helpful. Feel free to share. Cheers
Excellent info Dino, thanks so much for your effort putting it all together and in this easy to understand animated format...
Cheers, Nash
Hey Nash, Thank you for the feedback. Much appreciated. Cheers
Great video, goes right along with my manual. Appreciate you taking the time to put this one out, very informative for Jeep owners.
Hey Idaho,
Thank you so much for the feedback. I'm glad you found the video informative.
Cheers.
Finally a video that I can (almost) understand! Thank you!
You are very welcome. I’m glad you found the video helpful.
Cheers
Thanks Dino. Good info for those unaware of trailering and load ratings.
Hey Jeff, Thanks. I'm new to all this, so it was eye opening for sure. This is a scenario where "a little" knowledge can lead to unfortunate circumstances. Cheers.
Best towing explanation ever. Great job.
Hey Joe, Awesome! Thank you for the feedback. Cheers.
Such a coincidence I had to comment for the first time. I decided this morning to put in an order for a small teardrop trailer. Thanks for posting this, and I’ll be watching for your video on trailer brake controller installation.
Hey Jeff, Nice!!! Feel free to send me images of your set up and I can include it in a video of viewers’ set ups.
Cheers.
Thank you for this video. Very well put together and is inline with my owner's manual. Thank you!
Hey Carlos,
You are very welcome. I am glad that you found the video helpful. Cheers.
Wow... so much to consider. I had no idea. Thanks for this informative video!
Hey Randy,
Yes. As I began to look into it, I realized there's more to it than what most people would imagine, so I thought I'd share what I had learned. There are a few more considerations to take into account when towing, but the info I did cover was already getting overwhelming. I'm glad you found the video informative.
Cheers.
Oh my goodness!! BEST VIDEO breakdown explanation of all major parts of towing. … I looked everywhere before I went cross country with my jeep. Now my understanding is much clearer. I was never told about the weight distribute of the hitch and its importance.
There definitely is meaning to the madness of towing, and I totally appreciate you for this!
Hey Dee,
Thank you for the feedback. I’m glad that you found the video helpful. I have a few others in the towing category that you might find interesting as well. Cheers.
Man you explained this perfectly
Thank you for this very educational video

Awesome content
Hey Dan,
Thanks!!!!
Feel free to share!😀

Thank you for this Very helpful and informative video. I’m a stickler for safety and numbers. About to purchase an Alto Safari trailer (1800lbs dry) for my 4 door jeep. Based on the helpful video, I’m within specs, except for the frontal area (56 sq ft.) and payload may be a bit over (+ or - 50lbs) depending on gear.
Your video definitely helps Jeepers understand capacities and staying safe! Much appreciated
Hey Carlo,
Thank you very much for taking the time to provide some feedback on the video. I appreciate it very much.
Cheers
Cooooool. 🤗. I’m therefore your latest subscriber.
Hey Sergeant,
Thank you very much!
Cheers.
I only have a 2004 TJ Rubicon, so I'm even more limited in what I can tow. I did tow a travel trailer, but used a weight distributing hitch and was very careful about my loading. I wish it had trailer brakes, it definitely challenged the Jeeps brakes. I sold the trailer a few years ago though, so no pictures.
Yeah. The i’d imagine hills and winds only complicate matters when you aren’t able to tow so much.
Don't know how I got here, but great explanation! There is a lot to think about when towing, a 2 door jeep vs a 4 door jeep with same axel set up and engine are two different towing specs as well. No jeep is the same and that goes with any vehicle you plan to use to tow with. Do your research and don't allow fancy terms like tow package fool you. A factory add on hitch is not a tow package.
Great points. Thank you.
Cheers
Ok... Looong explanation. Nice. I just wanted to know HOW to hook the trailer to my jeep....
Hey icarusAB,
That would be a shorter video for sure.😉
Cheers
Awesome video! Very explanatory. But I still have one doubt that I can't find a great answer to it: Fuel consumption while towing. I'm tried to figure out how much more fuel would a Jeep Compass would burn while towing compare it to the manual rated fuel consumption
When I towed a trailer with my automatic jeep, Wrangler, my fuel consumption increased. I believe that the added weight that the engine has to pull reduces efficiency. I imagine with the manual, the same reduction in fuel efficiency would occur, or the more fuel would be consumed, as a result of the fact that the engine has work more to pull more weight. Other systems are also impacted, for example, the brakes have to work more to stop the extra weight, and the transmission has to work more as a result of the extra weight as well. I hope that helps. Cheers.
i found this INCREDIBLY helpful, thank you!. What about the antisway mechanism though? is it on both the trailer and the vehicle? or just one or the other? THANK YOU FOR AN EXCELLENT VIDEO
I couldn’t tell you about the anti-sway mechanism. I figured if the weight was so much that you required it, it was getting too close to the limit. I always worry about the windy days and going up or down steep inclines, and in scenarios like that, I don’t wish to be close to the limit.
Sorry I couldn’t be of more assistance. Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV thank you none the less! very much looking forward to starting some adventures. Cheers!
You had me laughing at the beginning of this video. 🤣
Hey Jendell Overland,
Ah! You mean about the many “discussions” Jeepers have about what they can tow, or was it the quick review of terms? I’m glad you liked it. Cheers.
@CheaperJeeperTV yeah, the many discussions. Was too funny.
This is JL Johnny by the way. I hope you check out my new channel
Of course I know! lol I actually started replying to JL Johnny's Jeep Life, but realized it was you from your new channel so I corrected it. I'm jealous about your awesome Gladiator!! Cheers my friend.
Dino, this should be required watching before towing for the first time
Hey b2b111079, Thank you. Feel free to share! ;-)
What about a hitch carrier? Do you have a video on that?
Hey Neo,
I touched on hitch cargo carriers in this video at the 14:00 minute mark. czcams.com/video/38elNgu8y5Q/video.html.
Do you think a more in-depth video coving this would be worth while?
Cheers.
I laughed at the start as this is what’s making me crazy. You definitely did the best explanation but I’m still confused. I have heisted for two years for this fear on not getting my numbers right. Looking at a 1982 900 pound scamp but still not clear how to calculate the 10-15 percent on the hitch . How do I know I’ve loaded 10 or 15 percent? I was told to evenly pack the inside of the scamp but then told to put more at the back to take weight off the back, then told more at the back will cause fishtail. My brain hurts.
Is there somewhere you can go to have someone help you through it all? Once Im shown once Im good.
2013 Jeep wrangler sport 2 door. 1982 scamp. 900
2 dogs total 95 pounds
2 ppl total 290 pounds
No propane no bikes no bathroom
I called Jeep and they just told me the two rating. Im mean that’s obvious… it’s on my door .
And each trailer and each Jeep has some variation that I can’t calculate unli try to weig my Jeep, and trailer with everything and everyone in it.
If you are part of a local Jeep Club, I’m sure that somebody there would be able to help you with that. Also the good folks at Wrangler RVing, the Facebook group they could answer your questions as well. But for now, I have heard of people using a bathroom scale to determine the weight down on the tongue by the trailer. I would definitely not have most of the way at the back of your trailer.
So there's a big difference between what you can tow and what the manufacturer says you can tow every vehicle I ever owned by far exceeded the tow capacity with no problems at all
Hey joe,
Essentially, the tow capacity is just one of the many factors you need to consider if you want to tow something safely
For example, you may have an official towing capacity of 3,500 lbs for your vehicle, but the stock hitch on your vehicle may only be rated for 350 lbs. In this scenario, the recommended tongue weight for the trailer 10% of 3,500 lbs, would be 350 lbs, thereby maxing out the hitch's capacity! In a case like above it would be easy to exceed the hitch's maximum capacity by simply adding more weight on the tongue of the trailer or when experiencing dynamic load on the road, via some bumps, etc. Then of course, this load on the hitch eats into your rig's payload capacity...so you can see that it's a little involved, so pushing the limits may be a risky venture.
So...you need to realize that you have to account for many interrelated factors if you wish to tow safely.
I buying a Jeep tomorrow!
Make sure you check out the 100,000 Mike review video, the corrosion class action lawsuit video and the why I sold my Jeep video first. That way you’ll make an informed decision.
Cheers
Throwring around towing terms.. that was funny
Thanks. 🤷🏻♂️
@@CheaperJeeperTV Do you have any insight on the better jeep to tow with. Either the 6 cyliner or the 4 turbo?
I'm not a mechanic or anything, but I do have a very strong opinion about this. In my opinion, the 4 cylinder turbo is already getting the maximum amount of power out of that small block. Over time, that extra power, heat and work being accomplished would definitely take it's toll, and I think the engine's longevity will be impacted. I think the 6 cylinder would hold up better. Here is a thread on the issue with more. www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/2-0-v-3-6-towing.25269/
@@CheaperJeeperTV Thanks.
What about the v6 2018 Jeep wrangler ? Same 3.6 L
Are you asking about the 2018 JK? Either way, the tow capacity will be in the sticker in the door jamb. Cheers
@@CheaperJeeperTV thanks , it’s the 2018 JL but it’s not the Sahara
What gear do you tow in?
What ever gear the 8 speed automatic transmission uses.
This is complicated. Can I take my Jeep somewhere and get help?
Your local Jeep club would have members that know about and have a lot of experience about this sort of thing. I’d be wary of Rv sales people, as they want to out you in as big a trailer as possible.
I read the XJ can do 4300 lbs when properly equipped, is that true?
I have never heard that, but maybe someone out there knows more about that? I'd try posting your question in a XJ forum.
I6 XJs could be rated for towing up to 5000lb. So were some KJs (Liberties).
Most were rated for towing less.
I just bought , a 14 wrangler unlimited sport 4 door , what's its towing capacity ?
It depends on what axle you have. I believe I if you have the 3.21, it is 2,000 lbs. if you have the 3.73, it is 3,500 lbs.
cheers
@@CheaperJeeperTV what's the gear ratio difference ?
I think the 3.73 gives the Jeep more torque or pulling power I think.
@@CheaperJeeperTV you are 110% right , I'm just curious is 2200 lbs gonna hurt if the capacity is 2000
Hey Matt,
I personally wouldn't risk it. For one reason, there are reasons for those limits. Also, if an accident were to occur, and it was determined you were beyond the legal towing capacity of your rig, some say your insurance wouldn't cover you.
Cheers.
I honestly never towed anything with my Jeep. My gladiator has 7000 pound compacity but I never dared towed anything with that weight
Hey Scott, Check out that WranglerRVing FaceBook page, to see what some Jeep owners are towing. Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV thanks I have to say I am glad I found your channel very informative
Hey Scott, Awesome! Thanks. The feedback is much appreciated. Cheers.
Some people neg on towing with Jeeps, but they're generally just ignorant.
Set up your MaxTow Unlimited with an anti-sway weight-distributing hitch, in-coil airbags, and some shocks with adjustable damping. Refresh your vehicle fluids religiously. Pay attention to the Jeep's payload, GVWR, and GCWR. Pay attention to tire condition, ratings, and inflation. Towing at near max capacity will be a non-issue. With full airbags and proper tongue weight, you won't even notice squat, so your coilsprings won't get sagged and your headlights won't be blinding oncoming traffic.
Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
I wanted to clarify that my trailer weight will not exceed 2900 pounds loaded
That seems like a manageable weight.
I tow 6000 lb trailer in the woods only no problem.
Wow...Hopefully your brakes, transmission, engine, and gears don't give out on you if you're deep in the woods. Cheers.
So.... a 5x8 trailer, 4 ft tall loaded with wood is too much?....oops.
Hey Russel, I imagine the trailer with a modest load may be within limits, but full of hardwood, may perhaps be over the limit. I'd certainly want to find out before you get on the road. Cheers.
Damn my 2012 Jeep Liberty has a higher capacity than that
Nice!!
Yeah, the Libby and the XJ could be rated to tow up to 5000lb.
First things first never tow with a jeep!
Naw. You can to with a Jeep. You just need to know the variables. Cheers
