Not only is this beneficial and helpful to anyone else who may be going through this or someone who has a loved one going through it. This is very well done and feels vulnerable and entertaining. Great work Steven and Val I hope you recovery goes as well as it possibly can. Much love guys.
I’m glad you posted this. My surgery is in 2 weeks. I’m scared to death. I just woke up one day in pain. Not a runner and wasn’t exercising at the time. No idea what caused it. It’s just a very small tear.
This was helpful. I re-injured a previous labrum tear. This time it’s much worse. Originally I injured it doing aerial silk splits and this time while hiking. I’m typically a pretty active person. I’m currently unable to sit and unable to put any weight on my left leg. The being unable to sit adds so many more complications as I can’t get in and out of bed without assistance and a lot of pain. I’m also unable to get in and out of a car without assistance and a lot of pain or even sit in a car unless fully reclined. I am using a walker to get around my house. I am awaiting an appointment to talk with the orthopedic surgeon to see if surgery is an option (or even a good option) for me. This video helped. Helped me see that post op healing may be better than how I am currently doing. I’m going to try to get a prescription for that chiro therapy machine as putting ice on the area has helped but this seems much better.Thank you!
I am on day 3 post op and really wish that CZcams would place this kind of video higher up in the search results. No "do this simple exercise" etc, just you guys talking and discussing how things are going. I am already panicking over the time I spend in bed or on the couch. I am doing rehab exercises down on the floor 4 times per day and only have paracetamol and some other long lasting NSAID to help with the inflammation. It's crazy how much of a difference there can be for people in terms of pain, swelling etc. Anyways, I am rambling. Thank you so much for sharing this, I'll be looking at the rest of your videos too and just so that you know, it's extremely helpful and appreciated that you've done these videos!
I am so glad to hear this has been helpful! Definitely check out the 4 month post op update, and the 1 year post op update. I (Steven) am about to have this same surgery, and it is crazy the difference from surgeon to surgeon. Valan's surgeon didn't want her to use a hip brace, and my surgeon does want me to use one. We wish you a speedy recovery!

Thank you for posting this, I have my hip surgery tomorrow and I am a bit nervous. I am happy to see you were able to get into bed I was not sure how I would actually sit and sleep.
This is the first really helpful info I've found on this type of surgery. Thanks so much for sharing everything! I go in this week for hip impingement (bone shave) + labrum tear repair. I'm going to need more help at home than I thought. 😅
Thank you for posting this. Do you have a video saying what your symptoms were and how long it took for you to get diagnosed I have spent the last 10 weeks in and out of doctors offices chiropractors kinesiologist and I have had to figure out my own diagnoses. I am asking for MRI today as my left leg is just getting worse and I am frustrated.
No, there isn't a video specifically about that. However, she had instability, pain and discomfort in the hip if she tried to run. Pain twisting or lateral movements. I am going through the same as you. It took me 3 months to get my hip diagnosis, and then insurance denied my surgery because I didn't have a local injection into the hip... ugh! Seeing another surgeon today
Love that you're documenting this process. It'll be great to look back on, great to practice story-telling and even help others maybe who are going through the same surgery. Loving this vlog style! That massage table is clutch!
Thanks man! That's what I am hoping too; that someone else will be helped or find value in it! There's not a lot out there regarding recovery on this, especially from a runners perspective.
This video helped me so, so much! I'm 23 and have labral repair/cyst removal surgery in a few weeks and I'm super nervous. I don't have anyone to care for me/help me post-op so watching your experience helped me prepare for what to expect. I live in a ground floor studio apartment so I'm not too worried about figuring out my way around an Uber, but I'm still scared for PT because my therapist is MEAN haha. I will definitely be asking for that ice wrap, though! I've never heard about it! Thank you so much for your vulnerability in your journey and all of the wonderful information you've provided ❤️ cheers to a full recovery!
Hint: probably should take the celebrex from beginning regardless of need for hydrocodone. It’ll keep inflammation down which is what causes much of the pain- but it does take some time to work. Unsure call your pharmacist. Hang in there. Thanks for sharing.
She is. For some reason the celebrex didn’t get filled the day of the surgery and I had to go back to the pharmacy the next day for it. She’s been taking it daily since then. Thanks, Marlin.
What kind of hip surgery she got? Mine they fixed my Labrum they put 5 anchors and sewed it back to the socket and shaved both of my hip bones for FAI.
Not really sure why I watched this video as I have just had my hip arthroscopy and am now in recovery. However, I did find it interesting to watch and to compare the differences between my UK surery and the US one. I had a labral tear fixed and my hp bone was smoothed out which took about 90 mins. I was kept in hospital overnight and after the operation my blood pressure and vitals were taken every 30 mins for quite a few hours. My legs were wrapped up in a device that alternatingly inflated every minute or so to restrict blood flow. I had them on for about 24hrs and this was supposd to help against the possibility of DVT and blood clots in the legs and lungs. I was given paracetamol and ibuprofen in hospital as well as Dihydrocodeine for the pain. I couldn’t move my leg at all for the first 5 hrs or so after surgery and it felt sore. At about 11:30 that night I was able to go to the loo with the aid of a nurse. The next day in hospital I met the physio who showed me how to use the crutches and how to get up and down stairs etc. I was also given soe gentle exersises to do for the first week with a scheduled meeting wiith a physio a week after the operation. My recovery has been good so far. After 5 days I am able to hobble around the house without crutches, although I am not really supposed to. In a few days I will visit my GP to see a nurse who will take out the three stitches in my leg, even though the stitches are dissolvable 🤷🏻♂️. I was given a grabber, like a litter picker, so that I can pick things off the floor and a 6” toilet booster seat to make the toiler higher for me so it is easier to sit down and stand up from it. I didn’t have a big bandage like you did on my leg. Just two small waterproof plasters covering the holes. Really surprised at how small they are but it means I can shower and wear normal clothes. It has been so nice to see you supporting each other and how your clear love for each other has got you through this. To those that are thinking or having it, do it as it really isn’t as bad as you think it will be. I have 6 weeks off work to recover so am looking forward to lots of rest and recovery.
Val, did you ever think you'd be all over CZcams squeezing your butt cheeks!? 😆 I knew you'd kill it with rehab, and good on you for recognizing "poor me" episodes for what they are... a crappy day, not a crappy life. It's easy to get sucked down the "life sucks, why me" hole when life hits a big speedbump, but you've got an incredible support network. I love that ice bandage machine, I'm surprised I don't see that all over recovery vlogs of the rich runners! You'll be taking walks in no time, and from there the fun begins!
Thank you Kelly. I guess it could be worse if anyone were to see said butt cheeks 🤣. The ice machine is great! They have different attachments for different body parts you can get too…..like ankles 🤣. Slow and steady wins the race 🐢
Ex college tennis player about to get this surgery in Nashville in 2 days. Love your content guys 🙂 getting it on my left hip first and 3 months after my surgeon will check to see if the right one is needed too since I have bilateral FAI. Very positive to go compete again👌
@@UltraTrailSteven thank you! Surgery went very well and surgeon said no signs of arthritis which should help a lot with recovery. Currently, on week 2 and had my first bike session 2 days ago too. Pretty pumped!
@@UltraTrailSteven how’s your wife doing? It’s been several months now right? Curious if she has been able to run full capacity again. Hoping she can make her goal of running that marathon 🙂
@@eduardomendoza6117 It’s been roughly 6 months for her now. We did an update about two months ago, and she still progressing. We’ve got some other things going on in our life right now so getting out for her runs is not as easy. But she’s up to running 3 miles consistently now. 4 Month Post Op Labral Tear and Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI) Recovery Update (hip impingement) czcams.com/video/yMjwG1P9-Wg/video.html
I’m having arthroscopic labrum tear and ball joint shaving done in a few weeks. I’ve been having ever increasing pain every day for the past 6 months. I found out a month ago that I have a 1 to 2 inch tear from my oval shaped ball joint rubbing every time I bend. I’m excited to get the surgery and only deal with recovery pain rather than put up with constant pain and a hip replacement once I hit 40. This tear is probably some of the worst pain I’ve had and it’s gotten to the point where Advil simply makes it hurt less enough to be manageable. Seeing this documentation of the recovery helps me know what I’m getting into.
@@UltraTrailSteven had my hip labrum repair and impegment surgery due to a FAI that has been aggravating for about 6 months. I finally decided to go through with it two weeks ago.
Thank you so much for posting your progress. Hope all went well! I'm starting on cortisol shots but was advised that surgery is an option i should consider. I've never had surgery and your video really made my nerves calm down. Thanks again!!
I knew you’d be okay 🙂👍 Val…… …… Time heals 👍👍. I’ve already looked at those ice/cold water machines via Amazon ( thanks to you 🙂) … I remember years ago, I saw a PT for my ankle, and he used a similar machine that had a ankle boot attachment thingy that allowed ice cold water that surrounded my ankle. I really enjoyed that. Now that it has resurfaced 🙂😬😬👍, think I need to purchase one. Continue doing what you’re doing Val, and you’ll be like new again 💪🏃♀️🏃♀️. You’re doing great Steven. 👍👍. Take care
Hi :) What is the name again of the ice machine? I am having my left hip replaced soon. The right one was done last year. Thank you for sharing your story. I hope you are back to running :)
I would have been so mad but also laughing super hard if that were me asleep and out of it in the car. 😆 you did a great job stepping up and being supportive and Val’s an awesome sport dealing with recovering but also all your questions 😜
I have a tear in my left hip tendon 11mm by 11mm I noticed it when laying on my side to sleep within minutes I was awake in pain this went on for a couple of months and just gradually got worse to the point where I was in a huge amount of pain just walking one step ! My Dr sent me for physio ! It’s been 8 months I’m still in pain but Dr has not mentioned surgery ! I’m 65 years old woman I don’t run but was walking but unable to do that now ! I did try walking for 20 mins but back to square one now ! I’m in Australia !
Y’all are the first I’ve seen talk about the bathroom stuff and I’ve been so curious lol.. I’m potentially looking at having the surgery done as well after having exhausted all other means of non surgical methods, the last being prp and the prp was hella painful , they even recommended crutches for a few days so using the restroom was difficult to say the least 😂.
Hi ... how big was your tear? I have a 20mm tear seen with a MRI now in waiting to see the orthodontic surgeon. I did mine buy getting up from kneeling on the workshop floor.
Glad they could repair it and not replace it. Take it slow Valan, you will be back on the trails and crushing it in no time. That ice machine looks amazing!!! When I broke my back and ribs I used weed (vape pen) to get myself off the pain meds, not sure if that is an option for you guys.
Hello! Thank you so much for making this video and sharing all those tips :) I'm getting my hip surgery in a couple of days and I'm feeling more optimistic after your feedback thank you! I would like to ask if you could share the exercises the doctor prescribed you to do at home, because here in France it's not mandatory to go through physiotherapy after the surgery. Thank you so much, kind regards
Thank you, I’m glad the video helped! Valan was told to do squeeze her butt muscles laying flat on your stomach, then on her back she would pull one leg up at a time (keeping the heel on the ground). Other than that, we don’t remember and it’s very specific to each person depending on what a physical therapist may prescribe. We wish you the best!
I’m going on day 3 I can’t do anything in too much pain. I’m not sure what she had but I had a very large labrum tear, bursectomy of two bursas and release of ITB. I was also left like this for 23 years i was disabled from it. No Dr would listen since I was 22 I’m 45 now all my dreams were stolen. I still don’t know if this is the only thing wrong I won’t know if I’m cured for a while post op.
I’m having surgery Friday and am grateful to already have the machine in my possession. I am worried about pain management after surgery and how long I’ll have to be down for.
@@umit777. I was injured on the job. Tore the labrum in my hip and herniated my L-4. I still have swelling and pain in my hip. The hip bone is catching on the stitches causing it to lock and limits my range of motion. The reason they did the surgery on the labrum was in hope it would correct my back. I am back to work part time, doing therapy, and still experiencing bolts of pain in my back and down my leg. I refuse to give up and I refuse to lose hope. I’m trusting the doctors optimism at this point.
@@umit777. I think it depends on where the tear is in the hip? I think my issues would be better if my back wasn’t slowing the healing process down. Each persons experience is different as is their outcome.
I know this was a while ago, but as a nurse it really distresses me when people put any weight at all on a foot/leg that is supposed to be COMPLETELY NON-WEIGHT BEARING. That means the foot should NEVER touch the ground unless the Dr. has given permission for that to happen. Using it can cause damage.
How are you doing now. I’m at D 12 and I’m also a ultrarunner. Keen to follow your journey and see the recovery process ahead of me. Thank you for the videos they’re great and helpful
seeing this video is pretty old, recovery is well done by now. Roughly, what were the stages...like how long on crutches? did you move to a cane after that? how long until regular activity stairs, walking hills? ...running? Why did you have surgery vs injections? I have been diagnosed with a tear and told try injections first. I say just fix it. thanks
Having labral tear surgery next Friday so thanks for documenting. It was super helpful. Are you able to go up and down stairs on the first week of surgery? Just wondering if I need to move my bed downstairs beforehand. Forget to ask consultant. Thanks
My left labral tear happened about 5 years ago and just cant stand the pain anymore so...sx is going to happen asap unfortunately i now live in a very rural area so i need to go back to the large Midwest city where i moved from. I sure hope you are feeling better. Are you ablevto bear weight now? Are you happyvwith the outcome?
Thank you for posting these videos. I’m looking at having this done soon. Is your wife still glad she got the surgery, would she do it again? What’s her pain level like now compared to before she got the surgery? How much help would you say one needs after the surgery and for how long?
Yes she is. Be sure to check out this video for updates: czcams.com/video/yMjwG1P9-Wg/video.html She needed help for a day or two, but for her as a parent of 4 kids, she needed me to do everything with them for 4ish days, and then drive them to school for 2 weeks.
Thank you for your video. I am currently day 6/7 tomorrow after having a hip arthroscopy and laberal repair. Did you struggle lifting your leg? I'm able lift my leg from my.knee but not my.hip 😢
Curious to what grade her tear was. I just found you guys today, I was searching for any info on lbral repair as I will need this. My dx on mri is grade 4 cartilage injury and labral tear, bone to bone, joint effusion and acetabular cysts as well as osteocyte formation and located anterosuperior. Mouthful. I'm an active RN and can't walk normally and my daily life is a challenge with the pain and instability of my r hip. The things you use your hips for you really take for granted until you have this type of injury. Oh I received this injury while in the ocean, jumped up to avoid a wave and landed in a I guess "crab hole?" Back in july.... ~I thought it was sprained ligaments, something basic, that will just take time to heal...well it's December and only has gotten worse.
@@UltraTrailSteven I play football and get stemming and dry needles and heat and stretches and all of that and nothing has helped me I got a mri and it looked like my hip bones disconnected from the muscle.

Valan did not use a chair in the shower. Our shower has a higher raised edge to put shampoo bottles on I guess, that she could put her elbow on to help support herself. To get in and out of the shower she used the crutches.
Hello Thank you for sharing your experience. Was it worth it to have yhe surgery, hoe are you feeling now? I was hit by a car ehen i was walking to the parking lot and that caused my tear. Im scared of surgery 😢

I am on day 5 post op. I have my first PT in 2 days. Were you moving a lot in crouches around the house during week 1? How much are you doing a day to get at least a some activity for your body? My lower back hurts a lot if I stay in one place for too long, so I get up, take my crouches and walk for a bit, but then I get pain.
Thank you for the reply and for uploading all videos post ops. It is a bit frustrating sitting on the couch being limited to movement, so watching your videos helps mentally and prep with questions for PT.
Hi I'm in the position where I've done round of physical therapy and my tear is becoming worse and worse so surgery is has to happen. My question is by week 2 can I get back to dropping off my kids and picking them back up school is 90 seconds away. If not how long did it take you?
So, the dr said I could not drive before two weeks. At three weeks driving was still not really great. I actually, and I’m not recommending this lol, use my left foot to drive my kids to school for the 3rd week, but by week 4 I could drive up to about an hour before I’d get achy.
@@UltraTrailSteven to be honest yes and no good days and bad days I need my anchors removed and I think I'll be fine how are you doing hope your recovery has been smooth
We have a whole series of videos about her recovery. Chex this one out here though. 1 Year Post Op Labrum Repair and FAI Surgery / Running After Hip Surgery czcams.com/video/pVu3Layq6JA/video.html
Yes. The surgeon said she could not drive for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks she didn't want to drive more than 30 minutes because the position was uncomfortable.
You kept staying on the pain medication like it maybe a problem. Wasn’t it prescribed for her to take? I understand that it may have been to strong and you had to take half… but the next day you mentioned her being on it again (which she is supposed to be) you said they gave her another form of pain medicine … how come you didn’t switch to that one? I am due to have the surgery and I was hoping you could give me some information on which pain medications/inflammatory meds worked but it seemed as if the norco was more of a issue for you in getting her off of it than letting me know if and how long it worked for pain. You just mentioned how many more days she should be on it and I think each day feels different so just 6 days post op is a bit early to be worried about when she should stop that medication. Are you worried about addiction ? I don’t mean any disrespect or trying to cause a argument I am just wondering how long did the half pill work for her? Thanks for the video! :)
Valan is very anti pain medication. She has some family history of addiction, so she is very resistant to pain meds if she can manage it. She stopped with the pain medicine very soon, and was only on naproxen for the most part.
I'm having this surgery at the end of November. I'm much older, "fluffy" and out of shape, unless round is a shape. Were you fitted for a brace? I'm doing 100 squats a day for cancer and that doesn't seem to bother my hip. I'm trying to lose weight before surgery and am doing arm weights. It scares me because I was planning to telework on day 3 post-surgery. Is that possible? This is my 3rd surgery this year. The others were not related to my hip.
@lesleynyborg2093 how did your surgery and recovery go? I am age 58 and also “fluffy” and out of shape. We are intending to retire out of state in a little over a year so I’m trying to get all my long-term pains addressed. I’m not even sure how I did this. I’ve been in pain so many years and just found out by MRI with contrast last month what it was. Just had a visit with the doctor today to go over treatment options and have decided to have the arthroscopic surgery, date not yet set as his assistant was not in due to today’s freak Spring snowstorm.

I am going through the same as you. It took me 3 months to get my hip diagnosis, and then insurance denied my surgery because I didn't have a local injection into the hip... ugh! Seeing another surgeon today
This really helped me before my surgery❤unfortunately it wasn't successful so I'm watching it again to tell myself that it can work😊
Glad it help, but oh no! Hopefully next time will work!

What kind of turmeric supplement you took?
Mine I freeze a water bottle and put in the ice machine so that I don’t need to buy ice or to make ice most of the time.

Hi randy whats going? How are you before the surgery
How do you schedule a surgery? I think I need labrum shoulder surgery,
Not really sure why I watched this video as I have just had my hip arthroscopy and am now in recovery.
Definitely quite a bit different! Thanks for the comment, and we wish you a speedy recovery!
@@UltraTrailSteventhank you. Hope your wife has benefitted from the surgery and it was all worth it in the end.

I know this was a while ago, but as a nurse it really distresses me when people put any weight at all on a foot/leg that is supposed to be COMPLETELY NON-WEIGHT BEARING. Did the dr give a timeline on driving?
