    Awesome purchase. How can someone store something like a valuable stamp album in a basement ?! Perhaps the previous owner passed away, and the relatives didn´t have any clou what it could be worth. Well, lucky you, because the inner part of this album was in pristine condition. Great find for a whopping 38,- bucks ! 👌👍 Greets from GER, U.

    Thanks for the videos, I enjoy your enthusiasm and they're sure fun to watch. One point when purchasing collections is that stamps have two sides: Your pricy stamps that look gorgeous on the front could actually be torn, creased, thinned or otherwise damaged on the back. It's not uncommon for album/collections sellers to be adding some of these worthless stamps as bait... buyer always beware.

    • @silkontheweb
      @silkontheweb  Před rokem +1

      Absolutely! Condition is everything... I did a recap of this album (it'll post later this week) and the condition of the key stamps was really good, generally speaking. The 12 cent had a rather large thin, but otherwise I was pleased.

    I had no idea USA stamps were this exciting, I did have a quick breeze through a couple of albums whilst watching this video out of curiosity and found a fair few that were shown here and from watching this I should probably put What I have on Ebay as I only collect GB and a few commonwealth but have thousands of world stamps (literally suitcases and a cupboard full) I could really do with a clear out.
    Would it be better to pick the stamps from the world albums and put them on/in stock pages with the hinges intact or would it be better to just sell the whole world albums complete? I don't really want to mess with the hinges so I've been cutting through the fold on the hinge and leaving half in the albums and half on the stamps of the ones I've wanted to add to my collections.
    Sorry pretty new to collecting and finding my niche area that I enjoy, I did try several years ago on a stamp forum to get more involved but that left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. Genuinely don't know what to do with my cupboard full of old albums now, some have been in the family for 4 generations and I'm not exactly young.
    Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. (Apologies for the hijack Silk on the Web).
    Regards,
    Jay.

    • @silkontheweb
      @silkontheweb  Před rokem +2

      No apologies necessary! Thanks for asking... when I remove stamps from an album I tend to take the hinge off at the same time, if it comes off easily, but I know a lot of folks will just cut the hinge in two to remove the stamp. Thinking goes, I suppose, that the hinge remnant can always be soaked off later, and you risk damaging the stamp if the hinge doesn't come off cleanly. As to your albums... I'd probably just sell the whole album if I were you, in lieu of removing and placing in stock pages... and take lots of pictures, or better yet a video of you flipping through the album, to entice collectors... as to your larger collection... I'm a big fan of collections staying in families, it's how I got interested, but you could always take (or ship it) to a shop for resale or appraisal. The American Philatelic Society's web site has a listing of stamp dealers on it... you ought to be able to find one in your area that will help you out... hope this helps.

      Hi @@silkontheweb thanks for the reply, it's given me a bit more to consider before I rush in selling the majority of my collection off or putting an excess amount of work and money in to something I wouldn't get any further enjoyment from. I may spend some time putting together a smaller 'family' collection of some of the nice or more interesting bits and pieces I have.
      I didn't think of taking a video and placing it on eBay, this would allow showing more of what is in the album.
      Thanks again for the reply 🙂

    Hey SIlk!! I bought some scott #390's and I have a Davo Luxe US album. I am new. HOw do I figure out which page they go on since there are no scott numbers in the davo album and many many spots with no pictures

    • @silkontheweb
      @silkontheweb  Před rokem

      Hi! And welcome to the hobby... it's a blast... you've hit on the biggest drawback of Davo albums, unfortunately. To have the Scott #s printed on the page you've got to buy a Scott album. But, once you get the hang of how it's laid out I bet you'll be pleased. For the #390 and similar ones your best bet is to go by the year, and then compare the denominations of that year, with the catalog your using. So, in lieu of pictures, your catalog will tell you that 1910 has 1 cent, 3 cent and 5, or whatever the case is, and you should be able to match that up with what's on your page. Also, I keep a spreadsheet with the page numbers of my album, and the Scott numbers of each stamp, so I know which ones I'm missing and which ones are MNH. Hope that helps...
