  • It has been another week primarily of rain here and Nick has started to think of a great way to sore rain water…however a specialist tool is required for the job…can you help?
Clare explains about a new little gadget she has bought for some of the windows in our side of the house, maybe this will help you too…and shows off Nick carpentry work re purposing some rood boards from the old wash house.
Nick gets to work making the window ledges for the outside of the Gite and does some smashing work in the rear walled garden by the pool.
The name and reasoning behind this week’s episode is explained along with Clare’s weekly tour of the garden for you.
We finish with wine of the week a favourite from Spain - Torres Vina Esmerelda - yummy!!

Sorry I missed your live. I was out pulling weeds in the garden. Now, thanks to you two, I have to go upstairs and sand my ceiling and finish the drywall. You've inspired me and Ive already lost ten pounds from all the work. Thanks and see you soon! Cheers!

Tony said, if you could draw the measurements/dimensions for the triangle key, he could probably make you one . He suggested you try to make a pencil rubbing of the shape as it looks rounded on the points.

Hi Clare and Nick, another suggestion in addition to what I offered in the live chat. The Pethericks have a channel where they are redoing a convent in France. They are trying to figure out how to redo the bedrooms to incorporate bathrooms. Perhaps Nick could visit and offer suggestions? And they are working on the kitchen….perhaps Claire (with her expertise in commercial food prep) could offer to visit and if they are far enough along, actually cook a meal for the workers?

Your idea to store rainwater in those tanks is brilliant! You will be the envy of most of France during dry summers :) I wonder if you could find the needed tool at a brocante? Window sills look great.

Those window stays seem like a great idea! They even look like they've been there all along.
Yard/garden is looking cheery! So are the hens!
Glad to see you have the sunscreen on! Our snow has almost all melted this week... and yesterday I was even able to fill the "pool" for my two pet geese so they could have a much-needed bath. Maybe I will dust off the sunscreen too! Try to think of the glass being half-full! 😉

Hey Nick and Claire ! Try brocantes or garden centers for the key. It’s a long pole with the triangle on the end . I actually have one here for the water shut off valve for my house.

I too missed the live. Sorry. It was my birthday Friday and got spoiled. I got dirt, really good dirt. Just what I asked for. I got 2 bottles of wine. A red Malbec and a white Pino Gris. Started my seedlings today. We are still getting a frost so I will keep them indoors for now. So I am looking forward to seeing your Garden grow. Clare, you seem to have some sort of bloom all year long and I have enjoyed you showing us. I do have the tulips and hyacinth starting to poke through. Irises too and the peonies have started. I set the cages around them as the blooms are quite large and if it rains, they get utterly destroyed. So the cages help. Well, that was a story wasn't it. Love me in 🇨🇦

Maybe these will be helpful with both your triangle tap thingy and the dog/window stuff. The tool your looking for is called a 'Tri head security screw'. The best place to buy one from is a UK company called ACCU [on line by typing Accu Screws into google]. The tri screw comes in various different sizes, is stainless steel and costs £4.76p. This company always asks if they can help you, they'll make you a custom one in your preferred metal if need be, [ for a bit more money]. I also had the same problem with our cat and Jack Russel escaping from our tall open window and decided to put a fly screen up on only on 1 half of the window so we could keep it up and just slide it along when we wanted to close the window, a problem you won't have as yours open inwards, you could fit one between the window and shutters. I went on YT to see how to make one and did in 15 mins with some wood [which I painted before the mesh went on], 2 centre stabilising bars 4, L brackets a load of staples and high density fiberglass bug mesh [not the useless net mesh] on Amazon, enough to do 2 tall windows for £13.00p. This robust mesh is pet and even pollen proof and you cant see it until you get close to it. Sorry for the long post but just thought maybe it would help.

    Claire,
Thank you for the PSA (public service announcement) on sunscreen usage. I just want to encourage everyone to wear sunscreen everyday regardless of the weather, because sunscreen is the best anti-aging serum at any age-indeed, the younger you start the better you will look at age 50+. I have had 2 basal cell carcinomas removed from my face before I turned 53. One left me with a scare running down the center of my nose. I had a highly skilled plastic surgeon so it’s almost unnoticeable, but if I had been more conscientious in my youth, I could have avoided this.

BEEARE THÉ BORAGE! I moved here 2 years ago and the borders had been neglected. They are now infested with Borage. The blue flowers are very pretty and traditional garnish for Pimms but you only need so many. Apparently Borage oil is a good natural remedy for menopause … another use for your wine vats if you plant them out. Seriously, they self-seed like mad and put down huge tap roots which over winter. They push up through weed matting and gravel too.

Is there a blacksmith anywhere nearby? You could take a rubbing of the triangle piece of the wine tanks, to get exact size and measure the depth of the indent and mark that on the paper with the rubbing, then take to either a machine shop or blacksmith for reproduction. I would also suggest dousing each of the spigots with a liberal dose of WD40 on a daily basis to allow it time to penetrate the age old corrosion. God bless

Here in the US we use window screens to keep bugs out and air in. I have noticed that French historic houses don't use them. I looked for DIY screens but the best I could find for your problem is this one. czcams.com/video/oGWEJL3srtk/video.html My idea was to make them to fit in between the window and the shutters, but removable so that you could open and close the shutters. Nick needs another task to do anyway. Take care!

Your flowers look beautiful! About the property itself, I am curious about the wine making. Do you know how long wine was made on site, and how recently? I had thought there must have been a goodly number of people working there considering there were two restrooms. Do you know much of the history and/or are you interested in finding out about it? Thanks for your lessons in methodically solving problems!

      Hi Gloria
We know a little about the history but keep trying to pry the previous owner for more information. We don't want to bother him too much as one reply stated it brings back memories for him and we do not want to push him away... We know it was a wine and cognac manufacturer along with an abatoir and charcuterie/butchers house as some of it's history.
As soon as we have more - we will keep everyone posted and our search continues for more info.
      All the best from France
      Clare & Nick xx
