  • The median house price in Auckland is now $555,000 but there are some that cost well over that figure.
So what can prospective house buyers in the super city expect to pay?
As Auckland's population continues to grow and the supply of available homes depleting, there seems to be no end in sight for the rise of prices.
Our reporter Tony Ng spent a day with Auckland real estate agents to see how much cash you need to splash in order to obtain a home in the country's biggest city.

They don't leave, because Australian houses are even more expensive. Moving beyond Australia requires a major change of scene.

the average Auckland dwelling now costs $931,000, compared to $913,000 in Sydney. So since this TV article aired there has been rampant house inflation. Auckland doesn't have the same housing density as Sydney. Part of the issue is that investors are buying up the cheaper properties in Auckland and first time buyers are being priced out by the inflation. Now first time buyers are looking toward Hamilton , Tauranga , Whangarei or postponing getting on the ladder.

Wow, the house that sold for 2,3 mil looks ugly. Everything in it looks really old and the carpets are hideous. It really just must be the location that drove the price way up because there's nothing likable about that house as far as I could see.

Auckland alone represents 36% of the NZ economy. So if you want to work, you do not have much choice in some jobs. That is where the prices come from.

It's next to the Bowling Club, and is 5 mins walk to anywhere in Takapuna, Spencer on Byron is across the road, and most of the street is offices. 845m, flat land, prime for redevelopment.

Somebody should tell those rich Chinese investors that they are being scammed, that there will be no profit for them as no one will be able to pay more than what they've paid for it. It's true that most Chinese people have no idea what local values actually are, it's easy for taxi drivers to scam a Chinese tourist into paying hundreds of bucks for one or two miles. The only solution is this: If you see a house rented out for more than 30% of the median income, do not rent it, do not buy it, let these greedy assholes sit on their properties until they lose value. It's because some foreigner spent millions on a house, every property owner now expects to sell their own property at the same price or higher. As if they were forced to demand ridiculous prices. But it is in fact their greed that drives the prices. They'll be telling you that there is a huge demand and little supply and try to justify things with saying that there are people who still pay the rent, ignoring that some of those people are spending way above 50% some maybe even 80 % of what they earn on rent. But they give a fuck. They kid themselves into thinking that they are some benevolent generous philantrophs solely because they are "generous" enough to let someone rent or buy their property. What you earn is not meant for you to spend things for yourself, what you earn is meant to land in their pockets, and you are expected to kiss their feet, as they are granting you the chance to live in their shitty houses.

Second, in the end of day, there will be other Chinese that willing to pay higher price for the Chinese that bought the properties in the first place, we don't care about the market, we are the market.

manicmode I’ve lived in Auckland. The houses aren’t very nice. They are behind the times. Many have no means of heating and double glazing uncommon. Auckland is very humid in the summer, damp in the winter and the inside of the homes become damp and cold. You can have heat pumps installed. Many of the homes have open fires as their only means of heating. R3minds me of England in the 50s when I was growing up. Glad to now live in England again in a cosy centrally heated house

You can't find that in any Southern California city/suburb, in the NYC tri-state area, in Hawai'i, and in most large cities of the U.S. In my Los Feliz district in L.A., all homes are in the $1million range starting, with 2-bedroom/1-bathroom built in the 1930s/1940s! The 6+ bedrooms you speak of in L.A. would be in the $10million price range. But I know you're being sarcastic, especially with the 10-car garage. LOL

Auckland is comparable to Seattle, but not LA. I mean c'mon Look were Auckland is compared to LA.Since I live in the Seattle area (which is not cheap by American standards) and way more comparable than LA. I can tell you that Aukland is about $100,000 more expensive for median home buying. Plus US homes tend to have more square footage.

Auckland is really a small city in paradise - it is expected that prices are what they are - there is a shortage of housing for those who want to live in the city or suburbs nearby. really, the answer is to live elsewhere and pay less. who says that you have to live where it's expensive - that's like saying that you HAVE to live in Manhatten - i'm sure that you pay well into the millions to live there - so do people complain about the house prices there?

Its not "foreign buyers" in general that they should be worried about
    Based on the
chinese bank-chinese buyer situation, its clear that china is still trying to corner the real estate market in NZ, they should be banning chinese banks from providing loans in order to stop chinese sent buyers from purchasing them at bargain rates.
