How to Convert an Epson EcoTank 2720 to a Sublimation Printer
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 21. 08. 2024
- We are stepping up our sublimation game by converting an Epson EcoTank ET-2720 inkjet printer into a sublimation printer. We first heart it was possible to convert some inkjet printers to sublimation months ago, but it took us a while to decide to make the leap. And we are SO glad we did!
Traditional sublimation printers can be quite expensive, so converting the Epson EcoTank to a sublimation printer was a much more cost efficient route to go.
We chose to use Cosmos Sublimation Ink in this printer conversion, as it had good reviews online and is designed to work with the EcoTank (no syringes needed). Note that we are NOT sponsored by Epson or Cosmos Ink - we purchased all of this out of our own money.
As we show you in this video, converting an Epson EcoTank 2720 to a sublimation printer is an easy process, especially with the Cosmos Ink. We even do a few sublimation test prints with the EcoTank to see how it all works.
So follow along with us as we convert an Epson EcoTank 2720 to a sublimation printer. And of course, let us know if you have any questions in the comments below!

Just got the 2720, perfect model for this as you donât need to pay for double sided printing for sublimation! Great video
Thank you! We agree - itâs a great little printer. Happy subbing!
Does the 2720 print up to 13 x 19?
@@marquisbradshaw5124 Hey there! The 2720 only prints up to 8.5" wide, so the largest it can do is 8.5" x 14". In order to print 13" x 19", you'll need the Epson EcoTank 15000 or 16600.
So excited we literally just scored an epson 2720 for 125 bucks on clearance at Walmart! Your video by far has been the best.
Oh yay! Congrats on finding a printer and thanks for the kind words - weâre glad the video is helpful! đ

Really would have loved to see it done on a shirt
Hi there. Thanks for the feedback. We just posted a new sublimation video testing out Hiipoo sublimation ink and paper on a variety of materials, including a dog shirt, if that helps. Check out the latest video on our channel if youâre interested in seeing that. Cheers!
AWESOME TEAM, I JUST BOUGHT THIS PRINTER GOING TO CHANGE IT TO SUBLIMATION, IM VERY NEW AT THIS DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. THANKS FOR THIS TUTORIAL.
Weâre glad itâs helpful. đ Thanks for watching! Happy subbing - itâs so much fun!!
Really helpful. I've been looking to start sublimating phone cases, but because I'm based in Zambia, I have to consider hefty shipping charges for all items. So being able to see which printers are more affordable and a more compact heat press will really help alot. Thanks :)

You all did a great job. The only note that I have is it would have been nice if you told people what to do if they didn't have Cosmos ink for the cartridges. Respectfully Thank you
Thanks for watching and for the note. The other method uses syringes, which we donât recommend. Weâve heard itâs messy and takes forever. Many sublimation ink companies now offer the eco-fit bottles, so thereâs plenty to choose from! Two others weâve tried are fr Hiipoo and StarCraft. đ
I read your response that I you I appreciate the guidance. It makes sense. Thank you

Haha - YES! Do it!!! đŻ
Wow just wow this energy is so beautiful from you guys. Love it! I have a dilemma here. I wanted an ecotank printer for making homemade posters and printing books and research papers etc. My only issue is, if I convert this printer into a sublimation printer for t shirts etc. Then I can't use it in the regular manner anymore right? Should I buy two of them? Also epson is selling me a refurbished 2720, can I still convert it? I assume they cleaned the old ink or etc.
Hey! Thank you so much for your kind words and great questions! Yes - you would need two separate printers if you want to do regular inkjet printing as well. As for your second question, we havenât tried converting a refurbished printer, so we canât say for sure. However, in searching some of our sub groups on FB, it appears that others have had success with converting refurbed printers. Weâd recommend checking with Epson to ensure that the lines are totally clean in a refurbed one to be sure. Good luck and let us know how it all turns out!
Another amazing video!!!

Without changing inks and sticking with cosmos ink from the beginning. Could I use this ink to print on normal paper for normal job printing duties?
EhhhhâŠ.theoretically, you could. However, sub ink is designed to release from the paper, so thereâs no telling what kind of longevity it would have. The biggest issue is that your colors are going to be WAY off. Designs printed with sublimation ink donât look ârightâ straight out of the printer. They have to be pressed with heat to actually turn their true colors. So while you technically could, itâs strongly advised against.
I just open my printer today! Everything was going great until I printed out my image. Not a complete image. I have the same sub paper but Hippoo ink. Any helpful info that will help for the coloring. Thanks đ
Hey! We havenât had this issue, but others who have mentioned something about the wifi potentially cutting out during the print. That might cause it to stop. And by the way, we have Hiipoo ink in another printer, and it works great as well!!
You mentioned something about alcohol and water when you said there were some white flecks on the mug. What did you say? Clean the mug with alcohol?
Hey! The white flecks are paper that's stuck. Don't use alcohol after you've sublimated. A rag wet with water will be plenty to get those paper flecks off. Happy sublimating!
My worst experiences with printers is refilling the ink tanks, and tbf, idk kf it's good or not but the previous models such as the epson l382 had a very very easy and unproblomatic ink filling system which is honestly one of the best in my opinion, so does this system have no problems? Cause when the ink spilled a bit i did get a little bit overwhelmed considering the cartridges are refillable
Hi there! Thanks for watching. When weâve topped off the inks, weâve had no problems at all!
Such a great video! Have you tried sublimating on shirts?

Thank you! We built the printer cart with a sheet of plywood and some IKEA drawers. Here's the video of how we did it if you're interested: czcams.com/video/TsrLcLEO8Ac/video.html
@@JustMightDIY đ± I enjoyed the video for the drawer, but that is a little out of my league!!! Thanks for sharing your creativity....
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Hi! Great video. Made the process look simple. One question if you know, if you fill it with sublimation ink and dont like the quality can you use a different sub ink after the tank empties or do you have to stick with the first ink you try? thanks!
Hey! So glad you like the video. The process really is simple with the bottles made for the EcoTank. :)
If you don't like the ink you try first, you can absolutely empty it out, run a purge and cleaning process and then fill with another ink. There are probably some great videos on how to do that. Happy subbing!
great video! straight to the point. canât wait to start using mine! where did you get that printer cart?
Hey there! Glad you liked the video.

Cool vidéo i just by a epson et 2720 i just wait for my sublimation ink from amazon.
So exciting! Welcome to the wonderful world of sublimation. đ
Hi there!!! Video was GREAT!! When you do the ink/paper alignment step. Do you print that on regular computer paper or sublimation paper??
Hi, we just use regular printer / copy paper. No need to waste the good stuff!
you two are just so cute together. great vid thanks
Thank you!! â€ïžđ
hello friends great video gave me answers to a lot of questions, just one more, when I buy a printer the cartridge comes with ink or is it empty, can I use sublimation ink if it is empty, or if it is not empty can I run out of ink first and already when is it empty to use the right sublimation ink?
A little bit confused , can the the inks mixed together or straight from empty cartridge to top it up with dye ink đ€đ€â.
Thank you, stay save.
Hey! Thanks for the kind words. As for your question, itâs best to start fresh. Definitely donât mix regular ink and sub ink. If you want to convert a printer thatâs been in use as an inkjet, youâll need to run all the ink out and do a cleaning (they sells kits on Amazon). As we havenât done thatâs we canât speak to specifics, but we have heard of others doing so. The best thing though is to start fresh with a new printer and sublimation ink.
Love the images and I am sold in that printer. Can you tell me what printer stand that is with the pull out drawer.
Hey there! So glad you like the video.
We didn't buy the printer cart - we made it! A sheet of plywood, some IKEA Komplement drawers/tray, paint, and a few tools will get you there. Here's the video that shows the build: czcams.com/video/TsrLcLEO8Ac/video.html
Thank you for this video. Iâve had the 2720 for 2 years now but did not know this trick. Do you think it would be possible to empty my
Ink and put the sublimation ink in? Or does the printer have to be new/unused
It's so much easier if it's unused. Cleaning the normal ink out will challenge the life of the machine. It's possible but we will never go try that again. And thank you for checking us out!
So in fact what you did made no change to the printer, did it ? Cause I'd like to keep my warrenty ... But changing the type of ink is okay, isn't it ?
Putting sub ink in will not keep your warranty valid. There are sublimation specific printers, but we never used. Too expensive. If it helps, we have 3 epson printers with sub ink and they have all worked for 2 years plus
I love how you guys explained it step by step but when I pulled off the paper after heat pressing it, it was a total blow. Iâm using Better Sub Sublimation Paper. Idk what I did wrong. Can you help?
Hey there! Glad you liked the video. It may be difficult to troubleshoot this with you, but we're happy to try! In order to help, we'll need to know quite a few things:
What does "total blow" mean?
What is your exact setup (printer model, ink brand, heat press you're using)?
Was the printer set up for sublimation when it was brand new, or did you have regular inkjet ink in it before?
How did you print your image?
What were you trying to press?
What exact steps did you follow to do the press?
Where did you buy your sublimation blank from?
Let us know, and we'll see if we can spot where it went wrong!
Soo helpful! New Subscriber!
Yay! Weâre glad itâs helpful - welcome to our channel and thanks for subscribing!
Great video ! My question is what if youâre printing something that has white, grey, and black, do you have to get those ink colors or these colors will print the image with those colors I mentioned ?
Fun question. It will print just like a regular inkjet printer in as many colors as your computer can come up with. Black, ok. Grey, ok. Normal printers don't print white though. White is the color of your paper or the color of the sublimation blank. But where your printer needs to print white, it will be left blank. This is true of all normal printers. Hope this helps. Good luck!
Where did you get your awesome printer cart?
Oh so glad you like it! We didn't buy the printer cart - we made it! A sheet of plywood, some IKEA Komplement drawers/tray, paint, and a few tools will get you there. Here's the video that shows the build: czcams.com/video/TsrLcLEO8Ac/video.html

hi great video..really appreciate it...I have a Question..Can u switch back to regular ink or u have to continue using the sublimation ink..Thanks
Hey! There are some videos out there about switching between types of ink and the process needed, so we believe itâs possible. We just havenât tried that yet.
Is it mainly the different type of ink that makes it âsublimationâ?
Hey! For the printing part, yes - itâs just the special ink. Then you will, of course, need the special paper, heat and sublimation blanks in order to do the full process.
If I use it as a regular printer, not infusible ink, will it print for a long time, I mean like 6 months or so, or more than that? Thank you.
Hey! We havenât used ours as a regular printer, so we canât say.
I have used laser printer paper with the Cricut infusible ink pens/markers. Can I also use it to sublimate with the EPSON & Cosmos ink?
Hello and thanks for your question! We noticed a big difference in using actual sub paper versus regular laser copy paper.
Iâm new to sublimation and I got this printer but their is a 5 ink channels and grey is one of them
Hi there. This printer (the Epson ET-2720) doesnât have 5 ink channels. Which printer did you buy?
Can you elaborate on the 8:12 mark when you say don't use alcohol! I am new and thought you needed to clean with it prior to application! Thanks in advance!
Thanks for watching! The alcohol should be used PRIOR to sublimating to clean the surface. But if you have any residue on it from the paper after sublimating, we recommend using just water. A-Sub paper tends to not pull off cleanly, so thereâs usually a bit that you have to wipe off after subbing. Hope this helps!
Iâm having trouble with my printer printing missing lines. I did exactly what you did. Also my yellow is almost non existent. Any tips???
Hey! There are so many factors that could influence this (and we havenât had that specific issue). Itâs probably best to ask in one of the awesome Facebook groups on sublimating with Epson printers, as you can spare pics and get larger community feedback. Hope this helps!
Do you have any other ink recommendations that print high quality? Thank you đâš
Hello! We also tried out Hiipoo ink in another EcoTank. You can see that video (and how the ink performs) here: czcams.com/video/OfBydn1XPaA/video.html
I need to ask, Was this Epson Converted or just Used Sub-Dye as apposed to Ink??? I have a Converted Epson pro WF-3720 and it has an outer ink box which flows into catrridges in printer. This One Looks so much easier
Hello! The only thing you have to do to am EcoTank to âconvertâ it into a sublimation printer is just put the sublimation ink in (when itâs brand new). Hope this helps!
Thanks for the info. So can you overfill and it overflow or does it stop on it's own when the tank gets full?
Great question - It stopped on its own!
Wonderful video! Just wondering, have you ever done sublimation using a convection oven or a NuWave Oven?
Hello and thanks for your question! We have done sublimation in a convection oven - we have a few videos on that here on our channel! Check out our sublimation playlist to watch them.
Can this printer with sublimation ink be used as a regular printer as well?
Unfortunately not. Sub ink prints differently (i.e. less vibrant and sometimes the colors look off before pressing).
looking for Epson Eco Tank to do sublimation on Mugs, tumblers, Shirts and a few more is there a difference in which one to get ?
Thank you for watching! First thing to look for is what size print an ET can put out. ET15000 can print 13x19 while 2760 prints only standard. After that it's mostly add-ons, scanner, fax, etc.
Is the sublimation paper required? Cricut ink can be drawn on laser paper, so I'm confused why this special paper is necessary?
Hey! We actually tried laser paper with sublimation ink printed designs and were very disappointed with the results. We HIGHLY recommend sublimation paper.
Hi! You guys are amazing great tutorials
Are you able to use the ink that comes with this printer for sublimation
Hello and thank you! To answer your question - no, you need sublimation ink. The ink that comes with the printer will not work for sublimation. Also, itâs best to use sublimation paper as well, as itâs designed to absorb and then release the ink when heated. And finally, remember that youâll need sublimation blanks (mugs, tumblers, polyester fabrics, etc) to press on.
making mugs like that is sooo cool. you did a wonderful job setting up and using the printer. I do have a couple questions for you. 1 - if I am not mistaken, when you buy Epson ink for the EcoTank, each color has a completely different lid that will prevent you from accidentally putting the wrong color in a tank. Do the refill bottles you used, allow you to pour into any color? (You did mention something about it in the video, but I am not 100% sure. 2 - I am old and no longer can read cursive. What is written on the cups? :-)
Ha! The mugs say âAdventure Awaitsâ and Wanderlust.â As for the question on the ink bottles - these do not have the âkeysâ on the kids like the regular Epson bottles, so you do have to be careful and double check before you fill.
Weâre glad you enjoyed the video - you guys should definitely give this one a try!
When itâs time to refill the Espon is it anything special you have to do? Or do u just add some more ink to the color when it gets low
Hey! While we havenât had to refill the tanks yet, the process Epson outlines seems pretty straightforward if youâre using the same brand of ink: files.support.epson.com/docid/cpd5/cpd56719/source/printers/source/ink_functions/tasks/et2720_l3160/refilling_ink_tanks_et2720_l3160.html
WOW first one i understand thanks, question if you buy the sublimation paper and the printer does the mug have still be a sublimation mug
Oh yay! Weâre glad this was helpful. Yes - the mug must also be a sublimation mug in order for the ink to transfer and stick to it. They have a special coating on them. We have some links in the description to places you can buy sublimation mugs and other drinkware.
How do you do a power clean on this printer? It says on printer go to epson support but doesnât tell me what to do from there
Hey there! We havenât done one, so weâre not sure of the steps. There could be something in the menus on the machine, though. You might try to do a CZcams search for how to Power Clean an EcoTank 2720 - there are prob some videos out thereâŠ
Why make a hole and not take the seal off or cut the seal all the way off?
Great question. Thatâs what was recommended by the manufacturer. It could work the other way (taking the entire seal off) but we just followed what Cosmos Ink recommended. đ
do you need to let it cool before pealing the paper off?
We let them cool a little bit but not all the way. Some people will dunk items in lukewarm water (not cold) to stop the sublimation process and speed up the cooling. We havenât needed to do that yet, but itâs something you may consider trying.
Great video. Thank you for your time. I subbed your channel. Have you tried to do photos yet and put onto a mug , t shirt , or coaster? Thanks again.
Hey there and welcome to our channel! We have done a couple of mugs with pictures on them - both were pet pictures for close friends. They turned out fairly well - the higher quality the image, the better the result of course.
We subbed you back and look forward to following along. Looks like youâve been posting for quite some time!
What if my laptop don't have for the cd disk the printer comes with??
Hey! You can download the print drivers from Epsonâs website. We didnât use the disk either. đ
Hello, thanks for the video. Have you change the print settings ? I heard that the ICC profile had to be changed...
Hello and thanks for your question! We have not changed the ICC profile but may try that in the future. Weâve been really happy with the results with the standard settings.
Can you put a tumbler in the mug system? Does the Cricut mug press replace having to use a overn or is it just meant for mugs?
Hey! You can do. 20oz tumbler in the Cricut Mug Press, as well as a few other awesome blanks! Below are some videos that you should check out on this topic:
Sublimate a tumbler in the Cricut Mug Press: czcams.com/video/g2I37B0iNNY/video.html
Other blanks weâve tried in the Mug Press: czcams.com/video/IVzwTAaI0FY/video.html
How tall/wide of tumblers you can use in the Mug Press: czcams.com/video/dCOUGOtOnCY/video.html
The convection oven is honestly easiest for the tall tumblers, but the Mug Press will do the trick for sure!
Thank you was a great help. Where did you get you cart the printer is on ?
Hey there! We actually made the printer cart with some plywood and Ikea shevles/drawers. The video tutorial of how we did it is here on our channel: czcams.com/video/TsrLcLEO8Ac/video.html
This may sound stupid but with the sublimation paper do you use that for printing onto that paper then heat onto mugs, tumblers, shirts
Great question! Our understanding is that sublimation paper has a coating on it that allows it to soak up the sublimation ink and then release it better than regular paper when heated. Itâs essentially a medium that allows you to transfer the design on to a number of different substrates like mugs, tumblers, shirts, etc.
When checking out the link for the cosmo ink it doesnât list the Eason et-2720 as being compatible with this ink
Hey! We just checked the link in the video description, and it does show the 2720 as being compatible.
Ok
đ
Mine doesnât even print the nozzle checks. I donât know why!! Someone help pleaseđđ
Oh no! We havenât run into that issue, so not sure what to tell you to try. Have you asked in any of the sublimation groups on Facebook?
Hi! I was wondering if the refillable cartridges come out. Would I be able to switch back and forth between regular printing and sublimation printing? thanks!
Hello! Unfortunately, the tanks donât come out, so you cannot switch easily between sublimation and regular inkjet printing.
So if i used a different ink brand what can i do to use this brand ? Can i just mix the inks or do i have to clean out my printer ?
Hey! So sorry we missed your question. We recommend cleaning out any old ink from your printer before using a new one.
Awesome ... I didnt see a link for the ink?

My print is not transferring onto my shirt. What am I doing wrong?
Hi! Thanks for your question. This could depend on a number of factors. First, are you sure youâre using a true sublimation ink and paper? If so, the next possible culprit is that your shirt doesnât have enough polyester. You want at least 75%, but 100% poly is best. Also, make sure youâre using a heat press set somewhere between 380-400 degrees for 40-45 seconds. Hope this helps!
Was your ink halfway full too? Because I ordered Cosmoâs Ink for the first time and it wasnât full. I donât know how full ink is supposed to be though because this is my first printer.
Once the ink charges, it will go down some in the tanks, as it has to fill the lines and such. Thatâs what ours did, and itâs totally normal!
Thanks, and I set my printer up and connected it to my phone but when I print lines show up on the picture. Do you know how to fix it?
Hmmm. We havenât had that issue. Thereâs a Facebook group on sublimating with Epson printers that you could join and get some great tech support from. Hope that helps!

Iâm having trouble with my color correction. My black comes out grey and my pastel color comes out dark. What are your settings? Also Iâve changed my sublimation ink twice thinking it was the ink. Please helpđđ» thank you!
Which sublimation paper are you using? Also, is your quality setting on the highest? On our computer, itâs Premium Presentation Paper Matte.
