Kevin Johnson: Why isn’t this Phoenix Suns Legend in the HALL OF FAME? | FPP

- He was a two sport star at the university of California, and led the Golden Bears to some of their most successful seasons decades. After a four year NCAA career, he was drafted 7th overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers where it was looking like he would be stuck as a back up behind Mark Price. But luckily for Johnson, he was included in a midseason trade to Phoenix and would go on to become one of the greatest players in franchise history. His first four full seasons in Phoenix saw him average 20 points and 10 assists, and he would even join Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas as the only players to put up 20 points and 12 assists in a season. He and forward Tom Chambers spearheaded back to back trip to the Western Conference Finals for Phoenix in 1989 and 1990, but when It seemed like they needed something else to push them over the edge, they went out and got that something. The Suns signed Charles Barkley before the start of 1993 NBA season, but unfortunately, this would be the beginning of years of injury riddled basketball for Johnson as he went four seasons with an undiagnosed hernia. Even with his injuries, the Suns made it all the way to the Finals in 1993 and then had some good playoff showings in ’94 and ’95, with their ’95 semi-final series ending with Mario Elie’s Kiss of Death. After a disappointing ’96 season, Johnson’s hernia was discovered and repaired, but Barkley was gone to Houston and although the Suns would make some moves over the next few years to acquire guys like Steve Nash, Jason Kidd and Antonio McDyess, their window had closed and Johnson declined. He would retire in 1998 before making a brief comeback in 2000. But for his entire career, Johnson was one of the best dual threat point guards in the league with his ability to score and pass and even though injuries kept him out of a lot of regular season games, you could bet he would be ready come playoff time where he always elevated his game. Yet, he’s seldom talked about these days; has yet to be inducted into the hall of fame and was recently left off of the NBA’s 75th anniversary list, and that’s likely due to off the court issues that have come up in more recent years. But if you’re strictly looking at the playing career of Kevin Johnson, he was one of the best.

The early 90s was packed with talented small PGs; Tim Hardaway, Mark Price, Isiah, KJ, Terry Porter, Kenny Anderson, Stockton, Mookie Blaylock, Strickland, Derek Harper, and Abdul Rauf
Nick Van Exel, Mark Jackson, Robert Pack and Sam Cassell as well.

KJ was fantastic! For a period of 3-5 years he was the best PG in the NBA. Unfortunately, injuries limited him.
Exactly. Injuries cut his prime and career short. Same as Mark Price. It's what kept Moncrieif and Paul Westphal out all those year's.
He was never the best point guard in the league.
Can’t believe he dunked on Hakeem lol but he’s a legend especially in phoenix!!!!!
Hakeem was shook by that dunk. I don't think he knew KJ could get up like that. He was the most athletic 6ft guard at that time in the league i heard.

He had a Steve Nash peak during the Jordan era and Magic and Isiah eras. 88-93... 94 & 95 he had phenomenal individual playoff series' vs Houston and Olajuwon in 14 playoff games. In 97 he still was member and key contributor to the 97 & 98 Suns 40-42, 56-26 regular seasons. As a core contributor in the Kidd Suns era... 99 KJ retired. KJ had 3 Suns eras under his regime
Chambers Era (89-92)
Barkley Era (93-96)
Kidd Era (97-00)
KJ and his converse sneakers were bad ass
this is what i was waiting for. this was my favorite player growing up as a kid. folks have really slept on how good KJ was. he should be in the HOF & that ain't no cap
The Dunk off the baseline on Dream in the playoffs is easily top 3 dunk by a PG ever!
He should be in the Hall of Fame for sure.
KJ was my favorite player growing up and still one of my favorite players of all time. Thanks for giving him some credit!
Same! I collect a ton of his basketball cards
He was Spectacular in my opinion. KJ would catch major reck in today's NBA.
KJ was legit, keep it going my man!
He is the reason i started watching the phoenix suns! one of my freaking favorite point guards. HE was so cold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Was my favorite player along with Isaiah Thomas of Detroit. Shame he doesn’t get more recognition😢
When you increase your stats in the playoffs, that means that you're really good.
Finally! One of the best guards in the 90s. Imagine is Barkley had a fully healthy Johnson.
My favorite player of all time … my friends used to call me KJ on the court … I even brought his sneakers LOL 😂 from converse
Same 😂 to every single word you just typed! I patterned my game after him, studied him relentlessly....Pissed as hell that he isn't in the hall man
Back in my hometown they use to call me KJ as well. They still do to this day😂
I was just about to look up a video about KJ to see what he was all about, and boom you create a video!
Thank you brother!
Check out his post bball career lol
In the 90s he had the quickest first step in the NBA, Phoenix Suns legend!!!
I never got the chance to watch him during his prime. But his overall efficiency is quite amazing for his size.
As a Suns fan since my childhood,KJ was one of my favorite players to watch. To me,he was the blueprint for Chris Paul. Especially the mid-range game. Great video once again man.
Man, you nailed it.
He was one my Favs also, but I never made the Chris Paul connection especially the way he dribbles
i still got some kj jerseys from my childhood
He was like the Chris Paul/ Westbrook of the 90s. Like somewhere in the middle. But stylistically KJ and Chris Paul are very similar.
Please do a Video on Tom Chambers. Never knew this guy and he averaged 27 points per game
Alot of people did in the late 80s earlier 90s but yes Tom was good dunked over a few dudes

I think there’s a different reason why Kevin Johnson isn’t it in the basketball Hall of Fame, after he served as mayor of Sacramento, and was primarily responsible in convincing everyone to keep the Sacramento kings in his city, there was another major controversy that surrounded Kevin Johnson, that no one really talks about. I would suggest folks who are interested, can look further into the story as it is a little too sensitive to discuss on this particular thread.
Indeed ! That’s why he is not in the HOF ! It’s a big thing !
Yeah, I have no idea how he got elected mayor of a major city after the underaged girl "situation" in Phoenix.
@@CinqueMalcolm It’s really serious ! I can’t fathom either!
I was gonna mention it too but you right. It’s not a place to discuss in this thread. There is probably a reason why the guy who posted the video didn’t talk about it. I guess he wants to present a positive environment in his channel so I respect that.
@@Mr.PR2000Karl Malone has been drug thru the mud why can't KJ reap the same fate?
Imagine being third in the league in assists behind the all time assist leader, and the future all time assist leader who has held the record for over 20 years and despite all that you are not in the hall of fame. *SMH*
Salute K.J a very underrated and forgotten Player from the 90's In the Post season he seemed to always take his game up a notch. That Dunk on the dream is unforgettable
MARIO ELIE HIT THAT SHOT & BLEW A KISS AFTER WORDS
My favorite pg as a kid. Was probably 3rd behind Magic and Isaiah in the 90s
Relax. He wasn’t bette Ethan Johnny boy
Not probably. He absolutely was. I believe there are only 14 players in NBA history to average at least 20pts & 10asts. Kevin Johnson is one of those players.
John Stockton > Kevin Johnson
@@atlien1988Yeah but you gotta remember John Stockton is number 1 in assists and steals of all time. And i dunno if that can ever be broken.
Stockton literaly played defense against entire teams.
Keep studying, youngun.
And yes he broke the steals and assist record in LESS games than it took Cheeks and Johnson to set them , so it wasnt his many games that gave him the records.
He was the best team defense PG the league has ever seen.
KJ does certainly rival Thomas and Payton , etc , though.
👍🏽
KJ was and will always be a legend to me. They should've got it in '94. Elite athlete with a big heart.
KJ you mean.
@@ayookusanya5437 Corrected! Thanks!
What a dunk on Mark Eaton at 1:17!
This was an amazing video! Great footage and attention to detail. So glad someone finally did KJ justice in getting the recognition he deserves! I'm from AZ originally, and he has been my all time favorite player.
I was a big Barkley fan, so when he got traded to the Suns, I watched them closely, KJ was a beast. A classic scoring point guard who would dunk on you if he caught you slipping. A joy to watch.
KJ would be a top 2-3 PG if he played today.
Yeah, you read that right. He'd be taking a lot of folks' cookies. TRUST ME
KJ was my first favourite SunS. KJ to TC was a potent scoring duo even before Barkley showed up. He played in a time in the NBA where the guard slashing to the basket almost never got the 'and 1' - or the call as he was knocked to the floor.
Man the early 90s NBA was the best
In the late 80s, and early 90s, the Suns teams were tough to beat. The combination of Xavier McDaniel, KJ, Andrew Lang, Dan Majerle, Jeff Hornacek and the best SF that never gets enough recognition, Tom Chambers. They had Kurt Rambis too and played five straight seasons with 50 + wins, making the WCF to face the Lakers in 84 and 89, then losing to Portland (my home team) in 90. So many great plays from that team!
The NBA exiled Johnson after he caught “that” case…. That’s why NBA Correspondents don’t mention him🥶
I don't understand. He saved basketball in Sacramento when he was the mayor. The Kings were gonna move to Seattle in 2011
That’s exactly what I’ve been telling everybody on this thread, most of the millennials were brainwashed by the NBA from even knowing who he was. You folks have the benefit of Google, use it, so you can see what actually happened with Kevin Johnson, well after the NBA, and not long after he served as mayor of Sacramento.
KJ definitely stood out to me, when I watched him play. He definitely balled. 3 x all star, several playoff appearances and a final, Olympic gold, probably 2 of the top five, in game dunks, by a PG, in NBA history, and technically he retired with the team who drafted him. Yeah I know Cleveland drafted him, but he was still a rookie. Phoenix was his squad. KJ definitely stood out, when he played, class act! Good content, NBA content man. Some of these players deserve their roses!
MY FAVORITE PLAYER!!! GREAT VIDEO BRO!! KJ WAS BEFORE HIS TIME! NEVER GOT THE CREDIT OR ACCOLADES HE DESERVES!!! INJURIES DEFINITELY, KEPT HIM OUT OF THE HALL OF FAME!!
If you ever notice or most NBA outlets wear, and Melissa former players talk about past bowl players, there is a distinctive reason as to why they don’t really talk about Kevin Johnson, unless particular stats get in the way of avoiding the discussion…….. for the sake of giving him his flowers on this particular thread, I would suggest folks Google the story on Kevin Johnson’s life well after his playing career
Off court trouble
KJ, Billups, Kemp, Penny Hardaway, Laimbeer, Mark Price...there's still a lot of misunderstanding in the hall of fame
Penny n price didn't play long enough... Lambeer wasn't liked by his peers or anyone else lol. Kemp n Billups ud have a case for. K.j. killed his chances when they found out he'd messing with kids
I’m glad he isn’t in the hall of fame and is becoming forgotten dudes a creep.
Karl Malone said hold my beer
Kj was my favorite player during his era. Yes even over A.I. & MJ. KJ definitely should be in the HoF.
The accusations against him by underage females is why he isn't in.

Thanks for the memories, FPP
YES! One of my favorite PGs of all time, and until hes put in he’ll always be the biggest HOF snub imo.
Respect to the channel my guy.
He should be in the HOF. He was one of best point guards in the NBA for several seasons making 5 All-NBA teams. And he played in an extremely competitive Western Conference. The west was stacked with strong teams. He went up against great point guards like John Stockton, Gary Payton and Tim Hardaway on a regular basis.
I believe Kevin Johnson is the most underrated player in NBA history
Thank you for representing one of my favorite point guards. Kevin Johnson.
One of my top 5 favorite players to watch.
KJ is on my all-time top ten of point guards, and just outside my top then of ALL guards. Few players in NBA history at 6’1” could dunk as hard as he could. He could pull up from anywhere, especially in transition. If I had a knock, it would probably be his slightly higher than average turnovers, but that will happen in the heavy transition offense that they ran for almost his entire career. I loved watching KJ play, he was all heart and always 100 mph.
Veeeery underated! Had a pair of KJs as a kid.
Thank you 🙂
You should do one on Derrick Coleman

I like this kid, he’s got a lot of potential… reminds of CP3 playing style. The only thing that separates them is Johnson’s smooth Jumpshot! I don’t know how he can be underrated? He was always one of the best when he hit the wooden court.
great video. brings back memories, i loved kj back in the day. he's definitely underrated imo. he had all the athleticism and quickness of iverson, but a better playmaker and more efficient shooter. i'm not saying he was better than ai, i don't think he was, but i think he had the tools to warrant some comparison. when i see who gets into the hall of fame, kj should definitely be in there.

Dude was 🔥
Been suns fan since 94, kj was so nice, the penetration to the rim, was something special, especially after he dumped on Hakeem that was crazy watching it in real time back then, usually those quiet good players seem to get slighted, not cool
The fact that he and his team beat Magic and the Lakers should be a longer conversation. They avenged their lost from the previous year and from what I read, Magic told him he was the next one up basically saying that KJ is the future (I'm paraphrasing). Unfortunately those damn injuries messed up his career😞
