I'm a proud member of the cow creek people and after our language and much of our history was nearly lost, I am grateful for my family representing one of our seven feathers and my great grandfather fighting the government to get us federally recognized!

I was born and raised in Coos Bay. I’ve always felt a deep, spiritual connection with the land on the Oregon coast- specifically in the Coos county area. I believe that it is a kind of paradise that will remain long after our capitalistic society collapses.

Our little school from Corvallis attended the celebration for the Siletz reinstatement celebration when my kids were young - such a honor - and so touching!
- I am also a great grandchild of colonizers - I have my grandmother Mary's tattered Chinook jargon dictionary (she was born in Goldendale in 1881) - and my folks raised me with respect for the people of Warm Springs and other natives.
My cousin Connie Bennett wrote about Oregon's to the S Alesea reservation trail of tears in her play Amanda Transcending, which was produced at Willamette U in the summer of 2019.
The generosity of the people of Grand Ronde benefits many in the Willamette Valley, sharing culture and donating to local charities. In 2021, when they received extra doses of the vaccine, offered them to those in the surrounding community!
I hope for respect and equity for the first peoples 🙏

My relatives, 6 generations back, arrived in the Cow Creek area in the late 1840s, in what became the town of Riddle, after their trek from Missouri. This video only begins to touch upon the conditions they brought with them, and the profound impact upon the first peoples they ultimately displaced in the process. I feel deep sorrow and wonder at the power of the past, and am now alert to discover the path to healing for us all, in the present.

One girlfriend worked for Javelin at Promise Natural Foods in C-Ville, I worked Forestry & Wildfire back then. I cruised thousands of acres of timber out off Cow Creek & out by Win Walker reservoir. Green Tortoise Buses use to roll through Riddle.

Frank Simmons passed close to when I finished this documentary, I was able to give his family the b-roll footage of his interview. His statements were so beautiful it was hard to keep filming. It is awesome to see tribes such as this, striving to be more economically independent and helping its own people. Some tribes are trying to do this and set the stage as a model for other struggling tribes.

It is good they are able to scrape by, but let's not forget how tribes got stuck in poverty today and are chained to it. The ongoing invasion and colonisation of their countries has resulted in the current American Apartheid (complimented by the Canadian Apartheid), and it is really, really, really hard for a people to build a wealth base when stuck in apartheid systems. The system (aka American and Canadian federal, provincial, state and territorial governments) has law after law after law that restricts Indigenous wealth creation, restricts access to cultural necessities (like religions) and sees the seizure and taking of more and more tribal/Indigenous lands and waters... and what lands or waters have not been stolen or seized are being actively polluted (and the ghetto/reserve/ations were placed on infertile, untenable lands to begin with)
So... yay, they can help model ways to "succeed" somewhat in this apartheid, but let's not kid ourselves in thinking they will get out of this mess all by themselves. Treaties are agreements between Nations and/or Countries. What are the countries? Their names? Their proper boundaries? Where is the proper arbitration on the terms of treaties? Where are the international rights? At least Canadian courts are using treaties and recognise that the underlying countries of the First Nations maintain aboriginal title (as do those in the States)
12:40 talks about them as sovereign nations... which, that is what it means: Recognise the nations and their countries and work to scrape back rights stolen by the US (and Canada). Post-genocide reconciliation or healing requires active work from all parties
Some of these tribes do more than "scrape by" and they could be using their revenue dollars in ways that would help their members so much more but its Kinda hard to do with tribal counsels being corrupt. Cant blame whitey any more.
I will do all within my strenght and witt to protect our sacred lands.

Almost every one of Avery Charles nine sons were either murdered by racist Sheriff of Klamath County or put in prison on fabricated murder charges. Tony Charles was murdered by Eugene Police and his body has still never been found! He’s still listed nationally as a Missing Person. Adam Charles-Prison, Jason Charles-just released. How the Charkes family has been treated is emblematic to the rotten heart of how the powers of Oregon government work..

Sue Shaffer is an amazing person. When I interviewed her for this, or any other project that involved the history of the Cow Creek Tribe, I was always amazed at all the wonderful stories, people, and events she would talk to me about.
Metzler Media Thank you for replying. Yes, Sue at 95 I think she is now, is still going! But I meant current leaders. Our tribe is devoid of great Lady Leaders today, like Sue. The women we have now are 'wives' who take a back seat to their husbands in power, and merely go along with what the men say. They aren't true leaders, like Sue was. We have really bad abuses of power going on in our Tribe by our men leaders, that NO media is willing to write about, for fear of our Leaders. It's like our Tribe owns the media's mouths! Our current leaders seek to supress facts about our real goings' on from the media today.
I would add Aggie Baker Pilgrim of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz and of Takelma roots as a wonderful leader, at least in a spiritual and inspirational way. I believe the Takelma had a history very similar to the Cow Creek people, some went to Grand Ronde, but most to Siletz.

I feel deeply sad about all the horrible things the Native Americans of Oregon have had to go through over the past 200 years. I hope they have brighter days ahead.
I continually had to pause filming when I was interviewing the Elders in this documentary, my eyes would fill with tears and I could not continue. I attempted to balance the utter sorrow of the past horrors with the beauty of their spirits and hope.
@@CMetzlerMediaif it makes you feel any better, indians weren't living in pure peace pre-Europeans. Tribal warfare was a very real thing and tribes would fight over land all the time. White Europeans did no different than other tribes, they were just much more advanced so took over the entire country.
@@mtnmotoadv Believe me, I know - I have heard many stories from Elders and tribal members regarding their warfare within tribe and a copious amount of research creating this video. For me, nothing surpasses the atrocities committed to them from outside forces and yet their spirit still endures. Face to face discussions with people that experienced both is what influenced my last comment.

It is amazing for people to go from the Stone Age to modern civilization in 150 years. With only oral stories/mythology to go off of the claim of being here since "time immemorial" is bold to say the least.
I don't think you actually understand what was being said throughout the video. You can not just glean a quote from an Elder and twist it into what ever you are attempting to say. The history is there and easily accessible to anyone willing to learn.

I went on Ancestry wondering where my bloodline was when Jesus was born. As a native Oregon it was right here where I still am trying to live. My 5th great grandfather was chief Peopeomoxmox. 🙂 I guess that means Oregon area has the deepest roots of my tree.😊

I have been trying to trace my ancestors. It has led me here. I am of Scottish and native American descent. but I'm having trouble finding out the native american ancestry part of my history.
I'm not sure if it's useful in establishing blood count for tribal purposes, but family tree DNA services may help you with familial connections. Might narrow your search to a family line, locations those people came from ect. I'll warn you tho, as was in my case a long held family belief that we were this and that... turned out we came from a totally different lineage and my family for 5 generations of believe were completely wrong. The dna doesnt lie, if you go down that path be prepared for surprises. Some people have deliberately avoided dna testing because the results have alienated them from their tribes. A guy I know found out he was NOT native american. His family was marched off to a reservation in the 1800's! Theres been grumblings of a plot to purge bloodlines out of tribes and conspiracy theories. I think it's just european blood lines that mixed into the native populations. Some families became so diluted that there wasnt enough left to say for sure. Example, everyone on the planet is related. You and I may not say were related but we have an ancient ancestor. Everyone on the planet can say this or that but they only count more recent connections or unbroken lines. Good luck in your search.

My mothers cousin who was Scottish met a native American soldier during world war 2 and married him and went of to live with him in America - contact after that was a bit roppey then dwindled out - all they knew was that she was living in some sort of reservation - i did some internet research and found out they had 2 daughters and were living in Walnut Creek - The mothers surname was Dillet the fathers Eugan and he came from a family called Defreese or something similar - unfortunatly i was never able to find the link again on the internet so the trail went dead - i will keep tying tho

I actually had a complete opposite result when I discovered I am of 42% Native/Indigenous descent after having a DNA test done.
@@dadduorp your lineage must be from a well known people with a presently diverse known people. My friend came from a small tribe on the west coast with 5 known living families. His DNA does not match any of those families and does not match any west coast original peoples. He cannot establish his blood count to join a local tribe. His DNA shows he is of the penutian people. But thats not enough for the BOIA. Im not sure where his situation is at right now. His case is in the courts. He said he doesn't want money, he said all he wants is his family name added to the list of known families for this little local band of Indians.

I am only a sliver, 1/32 or 1/64 but am a registered member, Coos. I have not taken an interest as much as now to the history. I can suggest blame to the systematic order that seeks to erase sovereign identity but such will not benefit. In these times, the agenda is clear but is universal. I do think there is a reason for my late desire to seek true history and do believe all will need such as well. I desire to show all that their sovereign expression is of utmost importance. As I lack everything except being registered, I do believe such a spirit will be kindled and take hold in all expressed in this realm. Thank you!

To put the context of agenda to collectively manipulate sovereign minds to remove a group is nothing short of conspiracy theory according to the system. A much appreciated part from a song from Payday Monsanto that "earth does not belong to man but man belongs to earth" is quite on point. The point that a central "authority" has presidence in this resonates but the delivery is chaotic. Blame and victimhood appears to be the go to in this time.

"They" remove your identity by assigning you a number. Your conscious focus on such mandated by a central "authority" effectively removes the sovereign expression, the latter most important to soul evolution, to a corporation in which sovereignty is completely removed and fear the motivation to maintain compliance that manufactures 3D identity. That which is at the mercy of a false god constructed in order to maintain a system of "want" over self sustainment.
Universally we are/have already been put through a system that seeks to remove sovereign consciousness. The goal is to suggest the sovereign a problem upon the realm but such means are employed now. Must I point to compulsory face masks, hints, to be hindered by fear, of mandatory vaccines and the continuous reminder of an "invisible enemy" so far not isolated and truly studied? A virus penned regardless of all other conditions of contribution? Collective confusion and fear over sovereign consciousness? The ploy to "self sustainment" is not by consent but by centrality of inhumanity. I would hope folks would consider all evidence and research the attempting plot against self expression and not fall for the script that requires the "giving up" of sovereign expression. There is great reason such consciousness arises within but there is a "cold war 2.0" against it. I am very much skeptical of the narrative repeated to me. I am hopeful in the ambitions that seek to overcome the script. I am very disgusted by the means to silence the sovereign soul. I am hopeful and pleased in the passion extracted. I apologize if I make no sense.

@@johnmurdock3448 Thanks for the reply. I understand your point, I have been in many county commissioner meetings hearing the arguments on both sides of this issue. Each side has viable points, most of the negative connotations were driven by NUMBY type accusations and most of the positive arguments were driven by Tribal members just wanting their land back and the opportunity, which believe me there are few, to generate income for it's members.

This documentary was researched and produced specifically for the various 'Trails Of Tears' suffered by the Tribes mentioned for the Sesquicentennial of Oregon State. I could not fit all Tribal history into one hour long documentary. A second feature was planned but never materialized sadly.
This was intended to open the eyes of people who were celebrating 150 years of statehood to the fact that Native American Tribes were here thousand and thousands of years prior to 'discovery'. I hope you enjoyed it for what it is and thanks for the feedback.
@@CMetzlerMedia many people at Grand ronde and other tribes are related to fur trade families. They intermarried with Europeans . This makes history of Oregon look very one sided and part of some larger woke agenda.

I spent many hours interviewing the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Elders and Cheryl Kennedy touches on a small mention of Tribal tradesman in her interview.

They are all descendants of fur trade unions of a French Canadian trapper and a native wife. Same goes for many of grand ronde . A lot of history happened long before American Oregon trail parties arrived.

How do they know they are the first people? Humans have been on the earth a very very long time. The indians have been here ten+ thousands of years. There is no way to know that earlier people didn't come and go... maybe several times... but no trace has been found. Let's not be presumptuous.
Well, not sure why you would question the science of this documentary but I will try to explain based on what I know, This documentary most certainly does not presume anything regarding the history of the people who lived here. My first question to you would be, how do we know they are not the first people? I researched the history of who was actually present during the time frames mentioned, nothing was presumed. The earlier people you mention are by definition eventually labeled native people to the land, brought into what we call the United States from all around the world eons ago, thus becoming what scientist have deemed native people. Ancestors from Africa, Asia, etc., all being a part of the family of 'Indians'.

Yes, the history is sad but the Tribes are moving forward and making amazing strides in reclaiming their lands, languages, and cultures.
