  • 'In the Land of My Ancestors' celebrates the legacy of beloved Ohlone elder Ann-Marie Sayers. Sayers has devoted her life to preserving the stories and culture of her Indigenous ancestors. This documentary challenges viewers to consider the perilous impact of colonization on the Ohlone people in the Bay Area. It also follows Sayers as she provides a refuge in the sacred Indian Canyon for Indigenous people to reclaim their culture, spirituality, and heritage.

My sister we are in wonderful time because this is happening all over the world even among Europeans. This is the Fulfillment of a prophecy that has whispered in the veins of every person on the face of this planet for hundreds, and even thousands of years. I have been laughed at for saying that the song Stairway to Heaven speaks of this but it helps to know what inspired the band Led Zeppelin and the fact that the song was written on Ancient Pictish ceremonial ground. The author, Robert Plant himself, has said that the song wrote itself.
During the same time of the release of Stairway to Heaven, Vine deloria Jr release his book "God Is Red" and wrote
“Who will find peace with the lands? The future of humankind lies waiting for those who will come to understand their lives and take up their responsibilities to all living things. Who will listen to the trees, the animals and birds, the voices of the places of the land? As the long forgotten peoples of the respective continents rise and begin to reclaim their ancient heritage, they will discover the meaning of the lands of their ancestors. That is when the invaders of the North American continent will finally discover that for this land, God is red.”
At this time the band Jethro Tull released the song cup of wonder which opens, like a responsorial to Vine Deloria Jr's quote
"May I make my fond excuses for the lateness of the hour,
but we accept your invitation, and we bring you Beltane's flower.
For the May Day is the great day, sung along the old straight track.
And those who ancient lines did lay will heed the song that calls them back.
Pass the word and pass the lady, pass the plate to all who hunger.
Pass the wit of ancient wisdom, pass the cup of crimson wonder."
I encourage you to listen to the songs "Helvegen" and "Gra" by Wardruna and know that this has been quickening for 40 or 50 years: the ancestors speak once again.
I am mestizo, I humorously call myself an "Apache-Viking" because all of my ancestors speak to me strongly.
May the ancestors guide you with wisdom.

When I grew up in California, fourth grade history was California history. We learned that the Ohlone were the original inhabitants of our area. We learned a whole lot about Spanish explorers and about the missions. Then yadda yadda yadda, gold rush.
So much time was spent leaning about the missions. Every school had their students do a mission project, building a model of a mission, which was the biggest at home project of the school year. Michael’s craft store still has a whole aisle of materials for mission projects, so I guess it is still going on.
We took a field trip to Mission San Juan Bautista, shown in this video. The mission is still run by the Catholic Church, and the surrounding area had other historical buildings from various times preserved for field trips. We even had a scavenger hunt. Find the stables. Find the seismometer (the mission is literally built on the San Andreas fault). Find the tiles that have cute paw prints from some animal that walked across them before they were dry.
There was a beautiful graveyard for the priests who had been there. Rose bushes, large statues. Around the back of the mission, as seen in the video, is the whole, by the way 4300 Ohlone are buried in this mass grave.
This shocked me. The full history needs to be taught. It was still many years before I learned that the missions were actually there to enslave the native peoples. We like to think otherwise, but the history of California is as brutal and racist as any other state.

It's so great that she's passing down her traditions and educating non-Native Americans all the while. I grew up on the other side of the mountains from Indian Canyon and my whole life I have never even met someone who said they were Ohlone and only learned about the Ohlone people in elementary school. I hope that because of people like Anne-Marie more people will learn about the land they live on and those who were there not just before, but also with them to this date.
I now live in Japan, where the Ainu people are experiencing a "revival" in which awareness on their culture and existence in general (some people literally thought they were EXTINCT) is gaining traction. Walking around downtown Sapporo you can find various Ainu art exhibits, videos playing in the underground walkway, etc, and they just opened a new national Ainu museum (Upopoi). As someone from Salinas I wished I was more exposed to the Ohlone culture, something as simple as art around town like in Sapporo can really provoke people to think "what's that?" "who made that?" and learn.

i am a 70 year old white man..... i have always loved the way the people of old lived so close to nature, and loved and respected nature so much,, living their way, the planet would always be so healthy.... i am so ashamed of not only what the whiteys did to our native Americans,, but what mean humans have done to each other throughout our multi thousands of years of our mother earth's history.... i read all these comments from people who read supposed facts.... one thing I've learned from studying history for 70 years is that no one knows shit...... supposed facts are always endlessly changing....
how do you know that maybe the " natives" orginally started in chile and moved their way up to Alaska.....!!!! and crossed over to Russia then china etc....!!!!!!! were you there back then ??? no you were not...... you just read about what you know and believe...... who really cares about heritage,,, we are all brothers and sisters under our one Great CREATOR of all things..... which is way to awesome to label he or she or whatever...... we should just all just try to get along and love each other...... i live in beautiful northern California ,, i remember my first time i visited carmel river beach , and all the times since then that I've gone there and hug the beautiful sand beach and look inland towards carmel river valley,,, it hits my spirit in a very spiritual beautiful tearful way for some reason,,, i do not know why, because i do not believe in reincarnation...... but i will go visit there again and again and imagine what it was like to be a beautiful Rumsen indian living in harmony with nature playing on the beautiful beaches with my girlfriend before we slide our reed made surfboards into Carmels beautiful beautiful water to ride some awesome waves.....!!! may God help bring us all together in love and kindness for one another.......r.g.

What a beautiful, powerful , strong, respectable woman! Here I am today watching this on "Thanksgiving Day," which has been taught in the perspective of the oppressors. Education is key in spreading the whole sides of the story, especially the victims' perspective. History isn't always written by the "victors."

@Life is Aisha you have to respect the elders. The elders are the connection to your past, and the children are the fruits of the roots, i believe that is why formerly marginalized people are in the shape they are now. Trying to be something that you are culturally not is a recipe for confusion and destruction not only for yourself but for your community. I am not saying that you have to live like your ancestors, but you can have one foot in the past for spiritual strength and wisdom and you can have foot in the present as to ensure your tradition and culture continues.

Its crazy how little we know growing up in this world about our ancestral heritage. All my family lives in Hollister/Gilroy. This hits close to home. I just wish my family would've tried to heal sooner because sometimes it feels like im on my own learning about our own past when they've been so preoccupied in just trying to survive.

When she said "the foundation of this entire country is built on lies" it genuinely felt so good. I think just hearing somebody say that simply and factually was such a relief, and I'm not even a Native person. Somebody speaking truth is just nice to hear I guess, plus I could listen to her talk for hours.

Great documentary.Great quality of the film itself. I learned ,so much I did not know . Sad, this could be the story of any Native American, but in particular of the California Indians . Like the sea otter,I thought the Indians ( Native Americans ) of coastal Northern California, had long gone. Say you are Mexican ,for sheer survival. Passing has been something people have been doing. Jews passing as Christians in the Spanish Inquisition and during the Holocaust ; light skin blacks passing "as white " ; and even gays passing as straight. It must be awful trying to be something one is not (passing ) .
