For forty uninterrupted years, Robert Moses exploited those in office through a mix of charm and intimidation. Motivated at first by a determination to improve the lives of New York City’s workers, he created parks, bridges and 627 miles of expressway to connect the people to the great outdoors.
Faced with resistance by protest groups campaigning for a very different idea of what the city should become, will the weakness of democracy be exposed in the face of his charismatic conviction?
Broadcast live from the Bridge Theatre in London, Nicholas Hytner directs this exhilarating new play.

I saw this play last night and funny enough, sitting in front of me was Norman Foster. Met both an architect and the greatest actor that has been portraying one, at the same time. Incredible.
This would be fascinating to see! The Power Broker is in my top 3 favorite books. Robert Moses is an incredibly underrated historical figure and absolutely fascinating.
I hope this comes to NYC! It’s such a NYC centric story.
Saw the play last night, deserves the 5 star reviews. Loved it.
This man is arguably the most powerful unelected official in the history of the USA, not just NY. I'm not even a theater person but I'd see this if it came to NY. I live on Long Island and use his infamous parkways all the time
I saw it also last night, and it was just fantastic. Strong but funny dialogs, well worked out, and an excellent interpretation. Really worth seeing it. We are from Belgium, and just spent a weekend in London, my wife insisted to go to the theatre, and I am happy she did.
Finally a movie I would like to see. So much history to be told.
I wish that you could pay for seeing this interesting play online. I live in DK this would be the most pratical way of experiancing the show.
Yeah would be good !
It will be online via their Live Streaming service to cinemas worldwide on 8th Sept and after that, I’m sure, via their streaming service - pay monthly to watch plays in archive or pay play at a time :)
You need to go to the UK to see this play live at local Cinemas later this week.Fairly low prices too. What's not to like about the UK arts scene?
Saw it today in India they screened it so I hope you will get on internet
@@theawantikamishra Ma’am where was it screened in India? I’m still working to get this play. Would be really helpful if you could share the details.
Never been into these sort of shows but damn I want to watch this. What a trailer
An interesting but slightly flawed play, carried along by a magnificently energetic performance by Ralph Fiennes. However, for true theatrical panache, the kudos goes to Danny Webb as Governor Al Smith, in what is at present probably the most rivetting bit of work on any stage anywhere.
still crossing my fingers that one day they'll allow people to purchase the shows to watch online. I live in Hawaii and there aren't any movie theater showings around me. I think the closest is Cali
We do release our shows online all around the world :) ntathome.com
@@NationalTheatre Does this mean Straight Line Crazy will make it on NT At Home?
What is the music playing in the background?
I saw the London play last month and the second half was much more interesting than the first half. The dialogue between the NY governor and Moses went on WAY too long. Robert Moses has an interesting back story that should have been included. That would have added to the benefit of the storyline.
Grazie!!
Someone Who wanted to build! Urban planning is such a positive attitude compared to the butchery we are witnessing.
i want to download this. is it online?
It's coming soon to National Theatre at Home: ntathome.com
Went to see this a couple of weeks ago and thought it was excellent. Great cast and learned some interesting facts. A lot of parallels to the road building and HS2 shenanigans going on in UK at the moment.
Glad you enjoyed the show Lindsey! We're really excited to bring it to cinemas
Don't you dare compare HS2 to Robert Moses-style road building.
the accents lol
What’s wrong with them?
Ah, Robert Moses the devil incarnate.
Yes, please!
is he gonna summon the american dream and sell his soul to hell and the fae realm
Looks kinda mid
Well it’s not
Shame his accent is baaad
I was sitting up enough to see the bored faces of the audience. This is really sad, great actors, interesting story behind with a terribly boring and plain scenario. Wasted time!
Watch it before you judge, a blank face doesn’t only mean boredom.
Sometimes people are concentrating on what the actors are saying. I saw it and I wouldn't say anyone was slightly bored.
Kudos for Brits attempting another American Story. Ulitmately I never really buy any of them as American. It's a parlor trick & a touchstone of real authentic truth will never be there.
English and american have everything in common exept language!
Hi George. Check out Bertie Carvel playing Donald Trump in The 47th at the Old Vic. 🙂
What about Christian Bale? He convinced everyone he was American many times, even his co-workers. He is so method, when he uses his real accent, others think he's being method again.
Shakespeare anniversary bbc4 broadcast Macbeth with David Tennant in the leading Role. He Will Never Be good at American accent i don t think.
@@slapstickgags Hugh Laurie in House. Most Americans didn't know he's an English man. They thought he was putting on an act when he went on stage to give thanks for his award at the Golden Globes.
God the music alone makes this sound really naff... Shame because reviews seem to be good
Huh
@@Misha-id1uf Can confirm, saw it the other night: music in the show not nearly as bad as in the trailer
